When a diamond is set in the ring, can I request it be set closer to the band so the diamond does not sit as high in the prongs?? Will that affect the light going in and out of the diamond? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

No problem if its well-cut. Some diamonds are set completely enclosed. A well-cut diamond draws its light from above - the pavilion acts as a reflector for that light and it is returned to the viewer''s eyes. The diamond can be set low as low as the design of the ring and the stone''s culet permits. Bear in mind that when this is requested the head/prong typically spread lower and may not allow a future accompanying band to sit flush against the ring.

There is some degree of adjustment in height that generally can be done. Too high is difficult to wear and the diamond gets hit frequently or catches on clothing. Too low, and the stone just does not appear as prominent on one''s finger. Many people really want others to admire what they have on and don''t want to minimize it. Of course, someone might prefer a low, nearly hidden diamond. It is a personality thing.
In moderation is where most things look best.

Low set diamonds tend to get dirty sooner and may be more difficult to clean if they are tight down into a setting. This is not 100%, but on certain designs it is harder to clean them when set low.

Light behavior is mostly light from the top, so height has little to do with it except for keeping the diamond clean, front and back. Dirt built up on the back will allow light leakage or absorption rather than nicer looking reflection back to your eyes.
