Question on Feathers

Recently I''ve noticed the mention of feathered inclusions coming up in many of the posts. The ring I purchased about a month and a half ago does in fact have a feathered inclusion on the edge of the stone. The certificate I have on the diamond is a GIA dossier which doesn''t show the location of inclusions, but the stone is graded as a SI1 and this appears to be the only defect.

I guess my main concern is the stability of this diamond. The diamond specialist (fancy name for salesperson) I dealt with when purchasing this stone said that this type of inclusion would not affect the overall integrity of the diamond. She said that it wouldn''t be more susceptible to chipping and also said that because I was going to cover the inclusion with a prong that it would in effect help protect anything from hitting the stone on this spot. Is this true, or was she just trying to close the deal? Furthermore I was never able to consult with the actual jeweler who set the stone to verify if hiding it under the prong was a good idea.

The only way I can actually see this inclusion is with zoomed in pictures taken with my camera so the cosmetic aspect isn''t an issue. Should I be worried about resetting this stone or am I just overreacting? I''d appreciate any input.

There are different opinions on feathers near the girdle depending on the feather. The size of the feather, whether the feather breaks the surface of the girdle or diamond, if the feather is in both the crown and pavillion, the direction the feather runs in, etc.

Feathers can run in toward the body of the stone or out toward the edge. Some feathers are in only the crown portion, or only the pavillion portion, or in both the crown and pavillion. Some feathers actually break the surface while others do not. Even tho the feather is near the edge, it may be completely contained within the body of the exterior cut of the diamon. The color of the feather can indicate whether or not the facture has healed and/or how much the fracture has healed.

Some feathers are perfectly fine to cover with a prong. Other feathers can spread over time from the pressure created by a prong. It''s really individual to your stone, the feather, and the mounting. You''d really need an independent appraiser to take a look for you and analyze your particular situation.

The diamond had a VS2 grade, as opposed to SI1, but the feather was the defining inclusion.
