Perhaps everyone should keep an eye out for suspiciously good deals on Argyle diamonds...

Mondial Neuman hold probably the biggest collection of pink diamonds in Australia, and today someone helped themselves to the collection with the help of a truck! I just saw it on the TV. The news report doesnt include it, but the TV report suggested that the robbers knew exactly where, when and what to take. They left all the white diamonds, and took only pink diamonds. They rammed their 4WD through the front window right as the transfer was happening from the safe. Sounds pretty organised. They scored around AU$2m apparently.

Screaming was heard as masked men smashed their way into an exclusive jewellery store in central Sydney today.

The robbers, wearing balaclavas, used a white four-wheel drive to smash through the rear window of the Mondial Neuman store in the historic Queen Victoria Building just before 11am (WDST).

It’s not yet known exactly what was stolen, but the store, in one of the city’s busiest luxury shopping precincts, specialises in rare pink diamonds.

Detective Sergeant Paul Dunstan said initial witness reports indicated two or three men, armed with sledgehammers, entered the shop through the smashed window, which fronts York Street.

They took several items before driving off in a red Audi sedan, he said.

“It’s too early to say how much was taken,” he said at the scene.

Three or four people were believed to be in the four-wheel drive, which may have been stolen.

None of the store’s staff were injured in the attack, although a woman working next door at the time of the raid heard screaming.

She saw the drama unfold and called the police.

“I was just going to go upstairs to the stockroom when I saw the car pull up,” she said.

“It mounted the kerb and at first I just thought it was a bad driver.

“Then I saw a guy who was masked jump out of the back seat and move a cafe table out of the way.

“The truck just rammed into the window.”

She said the man then went back to the car and got a bag out of the back seat before going into the store.

“I was shaking, I was scared they would see me,” she said.

“I heard screaming from next door.”

A security guard apparently tried to foil the robbery, standing in front of the red sedan the robbers used as a getaway car.

“The security guard stood in front of the red car which kept jerking forward to get him out of the way,” she said.

“It reversed, the man jumped in and it drove off.”

She said it was the second time in several months the store had been robbed.

The store remained cordoned off with police tape for most of the day as forensic officers examined the scene.

A police spokesman said detectives were still speaking to witnesses and the owners of the store.

Police are appealing for anyone with information on the robbery to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The owners of the store were unable to be contacted.
