new york city with dh-westin or sofitel???

my dh is going to nyc feb 12-14 for a conference. i am crossing fingers to find help with the kiddos and accompany him. his itinerary suggested westin times square or the sofitel, 45 w 44th street. i have never been to the city-either hotel better? accessible to broadway? i''m a dummy-can you just go to a theatre and purchase a ticket(no pre-order?) any other tips. it will be a short and sweet trip but i''d really love to go and get a little valentine break from my wee ones(everyone''s sick and i''m over the top worn out today) so thanks in advance. i appreciate any feedback!!! ps i''m a shopper
