So, now I am starting to think about wedding colors. The wedding is in the afternoon, May 20, 2012. The picture shows the approximate view from the venue (my venue is on the other side, so it is reversed, but you get the idea). Small wedding, about 80 guests.

img_4752_2.jpg

The reception is in this reception center, but it has cool windows. All this is just background. I need to figure out what to do about wedding colors. I really like red, I like roses, lilies and calla lilies. I don't really know much about any other flowers. My fiance got me roses for the first anniversary and roses and lilies for the second, so I would like them in the wedding if possible.

I am terrified of florists, and was thinking I could do one of those on line wedding in a box thing. I understand that that is probably also cheaper. I probably need one bouquet (for me), 3 boutennieres, and maybe 8-10 centerpieces. They send you bouquets and centerpieces. Have any of you done the wedding in the box? What did you think?

Here are some ideas I had:

1. Do some sort of rose and calla lily bouquet (red roses, white calla lilies, perhaps some other color). Rather classic, but perhaps boring.
http://www.amazonflowers.us/Bridal-Bouquet-Sentimental_p_11.html

2. Forget about a particular color, and just get a mixed thing of just different color roses. Here's the idea for that:
http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/collections/Rose-Wedding-Flowers-Box~-10-Package_23720.htm (pick the rainbow option)

Do people do this? Not pick any color, just go with multicolor? Since I don't have bridesmaids, where else do I have to match colors?

3. Do some color palette with multiple colors with just roses or a combination of roses and calla lilies. Don't know what, but this one lets you pick colors:
http://www.amazonflowers.us/Bridal-Bouquet-Soft-Feelings_p_225.html (roses and calla lilies)
http://www.amazonflowers.us/Bridal-Bouquet-Dawn-Rose_p_253.html (just roses)
http://www.amazonflowers.us/Bridal-Bouquet-Here-Comes-the-Bride_p_248.html (roses and calla lilies)

If I do the second or the last option for the bouquet, what should I do with center pieces? Something similar? Or can I do different types of center pieces?

Oh, and if I do this flower in the box thing, I will have to get vases. Any idea for a cheap source of vases? I also like those weddings where people have some low center pieces and some high ones. How do they do that? I have only seen pictures. Do you think I can do it myself, or should I stick to simple stuff for the DIY thing.

If you all think this online florist thing is a waste of time, and I should just get a local florist, let me know. It seems like I might be able to do the whole flowers thing in about 600-700 dollars with the online thing. I imagine a real florist will be more expensive, but I haven't asked any one. I don't want to spend more than a 1000 dollars on flowers.

Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Sorry for the long post. Any advice will be appreciated. Oh

I couldn't find online places that did roses and lilies. Also lilies with their white may not look very good with my champagny dress. I am not sure about that.

I ADORE flowers, they are my favorite part of wedding planning. Let me do some searching online.

I would quite seriously be happy to find you a local, GOOD florist in budget though. I'm pretty darn good with florists and flowers (I used to be a floral designer) -- even long distance.

I ordered my flowers through Bridesign. It was honestly a fantastic decision. The flowers arrived in pristine condition. We did the Mini-Calla Lily 18-piece collection and they were perfect for our wedding, and a total of $870.

We used Mason Jars to keep the flowers in between delivery and the wedding, and depending on your theme could also work well for the centerpieces. Our centerpieces were single blooms (pulled from one of the "centerpiece" arrangements in the package) submerged in rectangular vases from IKEA.

However, if you live near a Whole Foods, I would recommend contacting them for floral. I did a trash the dress shoot a few months after the wedding and used a Whole Foods for my bouquet. For 90 dollars, I got a beautiful rose and succulent bouquet, wrapped in silk ribbon. The only caveat is they don't deliver the arrangements, so you would need to have someone available on the day of the wedding to do transportation.

As for colors, I would say with the timing of your wedding and the location, you could choose ANYTHING and it would look great! Do you have a favorite color? How about FI? Do you have any idea of the "feel" you want for your wedding? Something more romantic (maybe a neutral color scheme of champagnes, ivories, creams, and soft pinks or purples), something funky (black, teal, peacock blue), something classic and springy (kelly green and yellow)...I would use the feel you want to convey to guide your color choices.

I hope this was helpful!

I can definitely find you a local florist to do what you want for 1000. And I think the flowers are so much nicer--to me-- when they aren't mail order. But if flowers aren't that important to you, then you can do mail order.

Here's my suggestion if you do mail order. I think all white or mostly white flowers look the best with bulk packages or orange or pink. I don't care for the red roses most online bulk vendors use. So if you want red, I would suggest doing red bouquet with mixed flowers online or with some white accents in it and the bouts from a local place. And then do either mixed red from mail order or do the centerpieces in all white from mail order.

I like Costco's collections so here a few from there.

ROSES:

I love this collection with all roses: http://www.costco.com/Browse/ProductSet.aspx?Prodid=11671931&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3605|90371|24845&N=4045482&Mo=20&pos=1&No=11&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=24845&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC38256-Cat90371&topnav= In white with the deep red/purple accent you could do red touches elsewhere. You can use the BM bouquets to decorate your cake table and to Jazz up the head table/sweetheart table

Get a few of these for the low centerpieces. You can do red or white.
http://www.costco.com/Browse/ProductSet.aspx?Prodid=11678266&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3605|90371|24845&N=4045482&Mo=20&pos=1&No=12&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=24845&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC38256-Cat90371&topnav=

A few of these as high centerpieces:
http://www.costco.com/Browse/ProductSet.aspx?Prodid=11671932&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3605|90371|24845&N=4045482&Mo=20&No=13&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=24845&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&hierPath=3605*90371*24845*&topnav=

Or do a these are the high centerpieces: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11093016&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3605|90371|24845&N=4045482&Mo=20&No=14&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=24845&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&hierPath=3605*90371*24845*&topnav=

CALLAS:

You can do this for your personal flowers (all white 9 piece collection-- USE BM BOUQUETS TO DECORATE THE CAKE TABLE and to Jazz up the head table/sweetheart table at the reception) http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11203467&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3605|90371|24845&N=4045482&Mo=20&pos=1&No=19&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=24845&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC38256-Cat90371&topnav=

You can do two sets of these for the low centerpieces (in white): http://www.costco.com/Browse/ProductSet.aspx?Prodid=11678342&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3605|90371|24845&N=4045482&Mo=20&pos=1&No=2&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=24845&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC38256-Cat90371&topnav=

Plus one set of these for the higher centerpieces (the calla package in all white) : http://www.costco.com/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?Prodid=11136821&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|3605|90371|24845&N=4045482&Mo=20&pos=1&No=5&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=24845&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC38256-Cat90371&topnav=#shipinfo

If you want red, I'd TOTALLY pick this collection though:
Garden flowers in Red

http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/collections/Garden-Wedding-Flowers-Box-~-6-Package_23723.htm IN RED

I'd do two of these with all centerpieces (6 centerpieces) -- covers all your tables, including your cake table

http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/collections/Garden-Wedding-Flowers-Box-~-6-Package_23723.htm

And then one collection with these for the personal flowers: http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/collections/Garden-Wedding-Flowers-Box-~-3-Pack-Bridal_23723.htm

And do two extra boutineers from your local grocery stores for the other guys. They should be max of 10 bucks each

If you can find someone who will just arrange your flowers for you for a fee... and you totally can (!!!!-- For like 150-200 max for the day)

I would do these ( I can help you pick the actual flowers and colors once you decide-- BUT I'm assuming red)

Your bouquet would be AMAZING. You could do ANY colors you want. And you could use the left overs for bout and the centerpieces
http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/Orchid-Flower-Wedding-Pack-50-Mokara-40-Mini-Calla_274.htm

PLUS

For the centerpieces
http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/DIY-Wedding-Flower-Package-200-Rose-and-6000-Rose-Petals_82.htm

PLUS

Plus some texture/depth with one of these for the centerpieces: http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/Dark-Red-Fresh-Spray-Roses_226.htm or http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/Red-Bulk-Fresh-Tulips_79.htm or these http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/Burgundy-Mini-Carnation-Flowers_95.htm or http://www.fiftyflowers.com/flowers/AllFlowersDahlias_297.htm?cur_page=2 or http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/Red-Textured-Filler-Flower-Pack_274.htm

And for vases you could do these for high:
http://www.save-on-crafts.com/silvervase3.html

And these for the low that you could spray paint silver to match the tall ones: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/plasticpots.html

And it would be AMAZING!

Gypsy, the pictures you posted are awesome. I don't quite know how to quote pictures in here, so I'm just going to use numbers. I think second, third, forth and seventh are my favourites. I think a combination of the forth and the seventh would be awesome, since the forth has the texture and the greenery I like, but not enough flowers and no red roses (I have to have red roses, my fiance gets them for me on every anniversary and valentines day, so they are sentimental. Today is our second anniversary, and I got roses, yay). The seventh is awesome with respect to flowers, but would be great if it had the leaves and the purple seed things from the forth.

Gypsy, do you not like the multicolor idea? All roses of various colors, or some combination of different flowers in various colors? The reason I like that idea is that I don't have to pick then :)

For the centerpieces, I need to process the stuff you posted. It is difficult for me to envision what they would look like. All my linen etc. is probably white, so I was thinking that white flowers might be too monochromatic. I suppose I could change the linen color, but I kind of like the clean cut look of white. Also, all red flowers in the center pieces may also be too stark with the white linen. What combination of colors do you think works with red? I am not a huge fan of pink generally, but it could work, I think. Or maybe orange?

I think two colors together are usually the best look-- with or whiteout white being thrown in for contrast. I find multi-colors where you see red and yellow and purple together to be very ... wildflower, country kind of looking, is the best way I can put it into words-- unless you have a very skilled designer. It's a nice look when it is done right but it rarely is. when I see your dress I think that two colors would be to be lovely. You can do all shades of red, too because there are a ton of them. Or you an add orange.

Oranges and reds are beautiful together. If you like orange it's a beautiful look especially as there are a lot of flower choices in the orangey-red range. And it looks great with greens for contrast.

I think if you put some shades of orange and use bright lipsticky reds and crimsons too, like the tulips, to soften the look the contrast with the white tablecloths would be much better. And you can add just a touch of color to your linens with colored napkins if you really want to blend it all-- not that you need it. Just change the napkin color slightly to an orangy color and it will help tie it all back.

I think it's an elegant look, and not too formal. Especially since you want 'open' arrangements-- which means with greens and without too much clutter. That's a look I prefer myself.

Have you seen my wedding flowers? I did shades of orange with green flowers and white accents. Our table linens were white except for the napkins which were an orangy-yellow kinda gold color which really helped make the colors work. I also did the high/low arrangements as it saved a ton of money AND it looked less formal and more organic than having all high.

Here are a few of my flower pics:

You could totally add in some oranges into the arrangement in the first picture and it would make it look much less Christmasy and add depth too. I would put in orange dalias in place of the gerbera daisys and add in a few orange tulips in place of some of the red ones.

And in the second picture you could add some of the trailing amaranth from the 7th picture and play up the greens more and put in some of the purples by changing the mango callas to eggplant callas.

Multi color...

First one is it done right, IMO.

The others are not as nice, IMO.

I just think that it takes a lot of skill to make it work. And since what you want is to cut down on skilled labor by going mail order or DIY, it's not a good idea.

I see what you are saying about the multicolor. I think I'll nix that idea. Two colors are cleaner, and mostly, I want to go for clean.

I love orange, and if you think orange and red would work together, that would be perfect. I might do a dress change in the reception and put on my indian wedding dress half-way through the reception. That dress is a very orangy red, so orange and red would also tie that in.
I was worried that orange and red together would be too "reddish" for lack of a better word. But the arrangements you have posted look awesome.

Among the ones you posted, I think a combination of these three would be awesome.

What are the flowers in the first one there? I am ashamed of my ignorance here.

I think I would be perfectly happy with the first one, adding some greens and the purplish berry thing from the second one. I might remove the white, since my dress is rather goldish/champagnish, and the white might make it look yellow. I love the eggplant callas, but should I stick to the red and orange theme, or is adding another color ok. I loved the tulips too, but would adding them be too much? If I can add in tulips, what color should they be?

So right now I'm thinking: red roses, the orange flowers from the first picture, eggplant callas (unless you think mango is better), some greens with the purplish berries, and possibly tulips (in an undecided color). I am loving it :)

I don't know that I want to DIY my bouquet. I am not artistic enough for that. I was planning to order something pre-made online. But I haven't really seen anything like the stuff you are coming up with online. Most online things are just one or two flowers, or they are just one color. Did you see anything while you were looking? Do you see anything on this website that might work? You can pick colors for all flowers. I am just not familiar enough with the flowers to know what they will look like.

http://www.amazonflowers.us/Bridal-Bouquets_c_9.html

Anyway, if we come up with colors and approximate flower choices, then I might go check out some local florists, and get quotes. I was afraid of going there, and being overwhelmed with choices, and then making a bad decision since I won't have any ideas. But you are arming me with enough info that I might be able to venture. At least, I might be able to get someone to make my bouquet, and then just DIY the centerpieces.

The idea of hiring someone to do the flowers is interesting. I don't know where to look, though, or how to evaluate if they are any good. But my mother-in-law-to-be offered to do the centerpieces, and I think she has some eye for this, so if I pick the flowers and give her approximate pictures of centerpieces, she might pull it off. And she is really excited about it, so if I hire someone, she might be disappointed.

The one above has white stephanotis, mango mini callas, orange jaguar mokara orchids, red and orange roses the greens looks like sage

Tulips (probably french) what looks like red garden roses or red peonies. You can do red roses that are more open for this look. The rest is greens of different types and I'm not sure what types of purple berries those are but I can find out.

Eggplant mini callas, tulips (probably french) and red roses

I love the eggplant callas, but should I stick to the red and orange theme, or is adding another color ok I think in this case the eggplant is like a deep red so it works. I loved the tulips too, but would adding them be too much? I love tulips and they are PERFECT for a spring wedding If I can add in tulips, what color should they be? red or orange, which ever you prefer, I like red because the shade of red is lipsticky and works well for spring

So right now I'm thinking: red roses, the orange flowers Orange Jaguar Mokara Orchids-- that's why I suggested this package from Fifty flowers http://www.fiftyflowers.com/product/Orchid-Flower-Wedding-Pack-50-Mokara-40-Mini-Calla_274.htm it has the option for greens-- which you could pick berries, one option for callas so eggplant and the orange orchids from the first picture, eggplant callas (unless you think mango is better No I like the eggplant ones they are gorgeous), some greens with the purplish berries, and possibly tulips (in an undecided color). I am loving it :)ME TOO! And with that list, I'd pick orange tulips because I think it would be lovely

Another is that I can try to find a florist, like mine that works out of her house so that it costs less, and who can work with what you want in your budget

Tell her what you want and what colors you want, in late November there will be a TON of orange and red flowers available-- ask her to make a centerpiece for you-- you can use it for thanksgiving then. And see what you think

This is what you want to see from your florist-- http://floraldesigner.com/ (this is my florist) lots of pictures of complete weddings -- when you go to meet with them you want to see albums full of flowers that are just breathtaking. Look through the website and get your eye used to what great flowers looks like and then you will know right out if someone has the ability to do what you want.

A lot of florists that work from home specialize in wedding and will provide you with references and lots of pictures.

I thought I replied yesterday, but my reply seems to have disappeared. The more I stare at the orange and red combo, the more I like it. But I have been browsing through theknot and other wedding websites, and it looks like red and pink is the more common combination people use. I guess I am just looking for reassurance that orange and red isn't too bright or whacky. I am not a full-on pink type of girl, but I could get on board with white with dark pink and red combination if that would be more classy.

If I was having bridesmaid, I certainly wouldn't go with orange, since that would be really bright. But I'm not, so maybe it will work? I guess I am just getting anxious.

Thanks for the tips. I live in St. Louis, so if you see any florist here that you think is great, I would love to check them out. I'll also call venues and see what I can find out. I wasn't too impressed with the florist my venue recommended. I just worry that anyone who is creative will be very expensive. But I suppose I won't know till I ask.

The website of your florist won't open on my computer right now, I'm not sure why. I'll try again later. But yeah, that I need to train myself to separate good flower arrangements from bad, since my first instinct on seeing flowers is,"Oh, pretty!" So they all look good to me. But later, after staring at others, I can compare.

Oh, one more question. Assuming I go with the red and orange theme, I was thinking having the groom's man and the bride's guy (his brother and mine), just wear black tuxedo vests. As for the groom, I'm not sure. Should I go with red or black, or the same color as my dress? I like the idea of the color being mostly in the flowers, so am leaning towards black or champagne. But I'm not sure what would look good.

This is the bouquet (with more flowers) my fiance got for me on our second valentines day. So this, jazzed up with more flowers, is what I'm thinking if I do red and pink. I imagine I could add these lilies and roses and add eggplant callas, and possibly some tulips, and it would look pretty cool.

So what do you think? red+orange or red+pink? I like orange better, I think, but maybe pink is more, I don't know how to say it, soothing? I honestly never thought I would obsess about flowers :)

Oh and Gypsy, can I say, if I could see you, I would hug you. You are awesome. :appl: If you want to come, you are totally invited to my wedding. Though if you want to come to one of my weddings, you should come to the indian one, since that one is probably more interesting

KA, I would go with red and orange. I think it's generally a more sophisticated color scheme, and I think that's what your gorgeous dress calls for!

As for your grooms and brides men, I would go basic black, and do ivory/champagne for the groom. Have their boutonnieres be their splash of color and call it a day. I've never been a fan of the brightly-colored vest look, and I think it would run counter to the look you're going for.

Thanks vc10um, I am also leaning towards orange and red, mostly because I like orange more than I like pink. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't too, I don't know, in your face or too bright or too colorful.

On the issue of flowers, etc. I agree with vc. I love the red and orange and think it's sophisticated and elegant and festive without being OOT. I think just black and white and cream are great for the guys. My DH wore a black tux and cream vest and tie and the orange callas were his bout. The groomsman wore black tux and vest with a cream tie. Orange rose bout from him. No need to stick red and orange everywhere. BUT-- definitely red shoes!!!

KA, you just made my year. What an incredible offer honey. If you were close by I'd come by just to take some pics for you! I know your wedding is going to be incredible. This is a LOT of fun for me. So you are doing as much for me as I am for you. ((HUGS))

Well, Gypsy, you are definitely welcome to come to my St. Louis wedding in May if you are in the area.

I can't believe how much progress I am making. Black+ivory for guys it is. My fiance will be happy about that, he isn't a big fan of wearing color. I hope you meant red shoes for me, Gypsy, not for the guys

Thanks for your help ladies. I am out of town this week, but will visit florists probably next week to try to see what they can do. Gypsy, if you come across someone you like in St. Louis, please let me know. If anyone is from St. Louis and know an awesome florist (or photographer, also looking for those), please let me know. I am going to start trolling knot to see what they recommend.

I looked on Project Wedding for you.

Here are the ones I liked based only on their websites and what is on Project Wedding:

http://www.lesbouquets.com They understand texture well. I think they would do a good job of incorporating the greens and the berries. I like the pics on Project wedding better than those on the website by color section. Third Choice.

http://www.richwestdesigns.com If he can work with your budget I think its worth a call. Lovely work and creative, definitely gets texture and color. Might might be too pricey. Second Choice (because of budget).

http://www.marrymeflowers.net Looks like she is VERY good at getting great results on a budget. Shows creativity and works with negative space and open arrangements well. Looks like she likes working with greens too. Plus she's won readers choice awards and has 30 positive Project Wedding reviews so I think she'll be fun and easy to work with, which is great. First choice.
