MC- That is AMAZING to me!
One of my friends has become a makeup junkie (she is also a fashionista and works for a big time jewelry designer representing a few certain high dolla dept. stores we all love so much) and I love seeing all the new fun pots of product she buys.

It all fascinates me and I would love to be more of a junky myself, but it kind of freaks me out. I am super crafty and good with my hands (painting, drawing, etc.) so you would think I would be good at applying makeup, but I freak out and just do the same things over and over again.

If I get makeovers I ask the girl/guy to explain how to do whatever it is they are doing but I never get it right. I have been wearing the same stuff forever, but I guess it works because I have good youthful skin, but I would love to know how to make my eyes pop or my lips pout or make my stubby china doll lashes look long and luxurious. How do you learn...?

Also- what is the deal with brushes? My friend was trying to explain to me that they really make a difference if you get good ones. Can I get a little makeup 101?

Brushes make ALL the difference. They can be very expensive but if properly cared for can last a long time. Trish McEvoy and Kevyn Aucoin are wonderful. It is like an artist, great tools help a lot. I think it is best to just be experimental, if you hate something you can just wash it off. No harm no foul. Find looks you like, subtle, more daring, etc...it comes off easily so it is not a big deal. But watch out, it can become an obsession...

Oh boy I love this thread. I Love Bare Escentuals, Laura Geller and Smashbox face primer. I am also addicted to lipsticks. I can even begin to count how many I have in my drawer and purses. LOL LOL.

Oh and don''t even get me started on shower gels and body creams. I could open my own store. Loccitane products. Amazing Grace by Philosophy. I have enough to last me for years.

OMG I couldnt even tell you how much I spend in makeup/skin/hair products per year! My newest and best addiction so far has been products from Blisslabs. I LOVE their stuff and my skin has never looked better and their products smell great! I am using their steep clean line in the AM and their sleeping peel line in the evening. I also love their soaps, hand creams (the one with macadamia oil and grapeseed is the best hand cream ever) and I have found oil mattifying nirvana in their Instant Mattification product. I try and buy all my stuff on ebay though and even there its very expensive. Sephora is brutal on my wallet as is gloss.com, beauty.com, even drugstore.com

I know that nothing will make me beautiful but it is so much fun to experiment and feel confident. I also love Clinique super and soft shimmer eyeshadows and once ordered like 15 shades from sephora.com, as well as the quickliner for eyes.

I also love shopping for hair care items and love Frederic Fekkai. The blue hair straightening balm smells divine, and works well, as does the techinician color glaze.

the bad thing for me is is that I buy something that is the latest and greatest (guess Im hoping for a miracle you know heehee) and then I get bored and get something else. I could open a store with all the unopened products I have (or have bought some more diamonds with that money)[$$)]

I just got the Smashbox primer with tint and SPF. I had had the artist do my face for a spring change and when he put the primer on, it felt like the original but gives the teeniest bit of tint and the sheerest coverage, like for daytime hanging-around-the-house-and-don''t-want-to-wear-too-much-makeup look PLUS protection.

Seriously, when you find a product that performs, you love it. My conversion foundation is super and I apply it only where I need it so I am wearing very little yet enough, plus with the new primer with SPF, I am covered.

People tell me alot--especially my esthetician--that I am blessed that at 46 years old I have no wrinkles or lines. I have always had a good regime for my skin and it helps not to be a sun worshipper. I love my Smashbox antishine powder and antimatte coverage. The antimatte is put on after the moisturizer I put on and before the primer. After the antimatte and primer, then the antishine powder which I incorrectly mentioned in an earlier post as the antimatte. If I have alot of stuff to do at home and am not going anywhere, this is it for me.

I use Estee Lauder''s Idealist and Perfectionist and Olay of Olay''s Regenerist serum daily. I adore eye shadows and eye liners, especially Smashbox''s gel liners. I adore their lipsticks and lip glosses and MAC''s as well.

I got it bad...

I am sure you ARE beautiful, do not say such things! Make up only highlights...what is inside shines through. I am the worst make up Junkie. We had a party at our house once and people were TOURING my bathroom. I designed special drawers for my make up when we built our house, thought if I hid most of it dh would not mind too much...BUT he sees the bills. I have covered almost all my vanity counter (which is long) plus filled 6 huge double drawers, three recessed cabinets, countless under sink areas and extra closets. It is a true illness. I also have make up artist kits filled. I just cannot stop myself. Some of it is old and rancid, I toss it when I figure it out, and I replace it only if I love it. My friends think I should open a store or start a makeup business because I love it so much. Once, my dh was in the shower, we have a large marble bench. He was standing there with a look on his face that was not good. He asked did I need 40 bottles in the shower?! He saus. I have one shampoo and some soap...jeeze. I cannot sit on the bench. When I met him he did not even use good shampoo, now I have hi on Kiehl''s which is better than the soap he was using!!!
By the way, for those of you keeping that last little bit of your favorite discontinued lipstick, 3 custom color specialists will custom blend it again for you. I am certain all ingredients are not the same as the original, but at least the color is.

HI:

DF, may I ask how do you know when to discard outdated products? Do you label your drawers and rotate products?

cheers--Sharon

No! Basically, if I go to use it and it smells or the consistency is not what it should be, or has discolored...lipsticks get a rancid smell and they get gluey in texture. Mascara, I tend to toss because of the bacteria issues. Most other stuff can last years if stored properly AND not infected. If you used it when you had an eye infection, clearly it needs to be tossed. Some foundations will start to separate...not too much light and always close lids properly...air is damaging...

My mom need some lip balm...and I had 11 tubes in my little teeny purse. Clinique Superbalm stays on for a long time and I just put a little color underneath, and my lips never get chapped!

I bet I still have about 30-40 lipsticks and lipgloss tubes, and that''s after my teenage cousins raided them a few months back! In my defense, I put it gloss on continuously throughout the day!

I need new mascara right now, and some daffodil powder from Benefit! Maybe I should go to Sephora tomorrow...there is a Tiffanys in the same mall!

oh my! thankfully, that's ONE addiction I don't have. I can't say I wear much. Just some Almay moisture tint (that has been discontinued!!! ARGH) and some bronzing powder and Sally Hansen Diamond Shine Lip Gloss in always asscher (a brownish/purple/sheer color)....But I do wear mascara and curl my lashes when I go out sometimes....Oh, today I got a nude shimmer eye powder to make me look awake..but it was like 4 bucks. I am convinced that drug store makeup can be as good as designer stuff...but if it makes you happy, why the hell not! ;)

I only buy replacements now (sunscreen, foundation, mascara, and MAC paints (the best eyeshadow primer). I have enough color to last me years. I wear a mix of MAC, Stila, and some other things. I figure that makeup does have a shelf life, so I don''t like to buy so much. Right now, I probably have about $600 worth of product. I also have about 5 perfumes. Fortunately, I let the guys buy those for me.

What has saved me in buying makeup is reading boards like makeupalley and beautybuzz for reviews. I don''t waste money on products that aren''t tested by real women. Also, I mix colors a lot to create new ones.

I don''t mind spending money for good skincare, sunscreen, or foundation. Those are necessities in my book.

OOooooh, yes, I love this thread, too!

You have given me some new ideas to try!
I like to go in every now & then and have my whole face done. Then I buy whatver I like or need and I usually spend a couple hundred dollars, so maybe I spend $1,000 a year? And that includes stuff for my daughter. She likes to come along and ride the wave of my bouyant mood when going girly-girly. She is a no-makeup ponytail kinda girl, but she''ll nab some beauty goo when she has the chance.

Last time it was Nars and I love the color of the foundation and the face primer. Before that it was Stila- their Illuminating liquid foundation is awesome and I wear their convertible color (for cheeks) almost daily. I find that a lot of their cheek colors work on me.

I''m pretty disciplined with my skin, too- I wash with Aveeno daily scrub (with soy) and I use mostly Aveeno and Aveda products for my very sensitive skin.
I''ve tried Perricone, and i think it worked, but it wasn''t dramatic.

I''ve done several laser treatments, too, to minimize pores, lighten sun damage, etc. I''m 49 and so far, my strategy is keep the skin nice & wear subtle makeup, but no botox or cutting. So far, it''s working ... I still get compliments, but I don''t think anybody takes me for a 30 year old!
I love make-up !!!

I''m getting Botox, but not in my wrinkles, but for Migraine headaches. I was asking my Dr. how safe it was and she said that she has no qualms about it at all, and side effects are very very rare. Unfortunately, they have to inject the trigger sites...so you can''t get rid of wrinkles at the same time.

If it works, I''m going to do the frown lines between my eyebrows...a genetic thing that no about of make-up can hide! My mom wanted to get her eyebrow lines done, but at 57, she waited too long for Botox to work and would have to get a filler like restalyne. From what I heard, Botox should be mostly only done on the forehead area and not so much on the main part of your face? So, will I have to add Botox to my annual make-up budget?

I still didn''t make it to the store to get new mascara! Thank goodness I have half a dozen of the little mini trial ones from Gift with Purchase to tide me over!

How was the laser treatment on sensitive skin?

Hey, if botox works on your migraine headaches, that is good news!!
I''venever had them but I see how excruciating they are for people I know.

I do sorta have line between my eyebrows and I know botox would smooth ''em right out. But, I also have pronounced laugh lines and i am afraid the smooth forehead would make the laugh llines look even worse. And after seeing poeple like Meg ryan, etc, I am afraid to pump fillers into my face.
This is where I remind myself that I''m 49 and that''s just the way it goes.

The lasers have worked great.
I had CoolTouch and Photorejuvenation. I had about 4-5 of each, plus a bunch of microdermabrasion sessions. I have fair skin and I never had any bad reactions. It''s been 5 years.... I probably need to go back!!

A
little price-y but good results.

If the Botox works, for the migraines and my frown lines, I''ll have to start a new Botox for Migraine thread!

I think I may have to have some microdermabrasion on my forehead right where my hair "cowlicks" on the side by my temple, because it''s always sort of mottled (good icky-sounding word) and spotchy there and I think it''s sundamage. I have a Dermatology appt. as well, so I''ll have to see what they think! I''m starting to get a few lines around my mouth...but I don''t have crow''s feet yet, just the pesky frown lines!

There are some crazy filler-filled chicks in Hollywood lately! Meg Ryan, Janice Dickerson, Pam Anderson, Dolly Parton, Lara Flynn Boyle are just a few that have recently looked like they were attacked by a swarm of killer bees!

Tawn, as afraid of botox as I am I have really terrible migraines and nothing is helping, I have tried it all, imitrex, zomig, topamax, maxalt, demerol, fiornal, etc...I am allergic now to aspirin and motrin/advil. I have even tried accupuncture. I have a migraine at least once a month. I also get tension headaches and stress ones up the back of my neck. I read about this producer Mike Medavoy''s wife, Irina, in Vanity Fair. She had some issues with using it for migraines, which is termed off lable usage. I am not sure what the issues were but it was interesting, because I am pretty open to things at this point. Headaches have ruined too much for me recently...

2.5 days a month are ruined/lost every month, and the triptans make my heart all crazy and speedy and don''t get rid of it anyways. I''ve tried all of the above except demerol! Lately, I''ve started throwing up more often with them as well, which I didn''t do often before! They are such helll!

I''m waiting for the pain management clinic to make the appt. and then I''ll let you know what the deal is. My reg Dr. didn''t think it could be done, but then called me back with to tell me she referred me! She thinks Botox is the bomb...and they are using it for soooo many things now, like migraines, underarm sweating, stroke victims, alzheimers, etc...(My friend works for a Pharmaceutical Co. and filled me in!)

I''ll bravely be the guinea pig! Well, I''ll actually probably cry like a sissy, but....

Well, I am curious and would love to know what happens. I have had them, and other headaches, since I was 10.. I also vomit though less often, just feel like I want to I am sooo nauseous. Add to that the other types of pain and I think I have a headache almost all the time...or maybe it just feels that way. They absolutely ruin things. Now, two fiorcet every four hours (I am supposed to take one every 6) and a regular coke, plus literally just going into bed, are the only things that work for me! Keep me posted if you do not mind...

Fun thread. I am not a true addict but I do have a few weaknesses. I like the eyeshadows that come in packs of 5 from Dior. I went to buy some eye cream and got talked into buying three products that totaled over $300. So now, I use three cremes at bedtime. Yeesh. I thought it would be a pain in the butt and I would never stick with it but I actually enjoy doing it each night.

I just started using the Fekkai hair products and I love them too.

I would rather spend my $$ on another weakness, clothes.

DF/Tawn - I''m so sorry to hear about your migraines. There was a thread awhile ago about migraines & I''ve shared my story before. I used to get terrible migraines all through puberty. I missed 25 days of school my freshman year of high school due to headaches. I can''t tell you how many times I sat through class with one or suffered through the day and then went immediately to sleep right after it was over. I also got sick to my stomach & could not really function with most of my headaches.

I also tried most of the medications you listed above, until I kept a log of my headaches. I kept how I felt that day, what the weather was, what I ate & how I was feeling (I would get them a lot when I was feeling particularly stressed). I brought my log to my doctor & he realized that it was time to put me on preventative medication. I started taking Amitryptyline (an anti-depressant, but not an SSRI like Prozac) & Inderal (which is a beta-blocker. These were able to stave off about 95% of my headaches. I would get an infrequent headache (maybe once per month) & after awhile, the doctor gave me Migranal (a nasal spary) to help during attacks. These 2 things really helped! The headaches were much less severe & if I took the migranal early enough, the headache never got that bad. I took the preventative medication from late 1998 until 2001. I had mostly stopped getting the monthly headaches, so I decided to try getting off the meds. The headaches surprisingly did not come back. I kept a prescription of Migranal for about 3 years after that, but I haven''t refilled it in quite a while. Now when I feel a headache come on, I take some advil (I think I''d need my prescription still if I were allergic!) & have a cup of coffee. Usually I am good to go for the rest of the day.

I am always afraid that my headaches will come back as they definitely seem hormonally related. My grandmother used to get terrible migraines & she said the worst they ever were was right after she had her children...imagine that. A screaming newborn & a migraine!!!!!

I wish you both best of luck & the only thing I can suggest is to keep trying different things! If your doctor doesn''t seem keen on trying too much, find a new doctor!

Sorry for the thread hi-jack - I''ll talk about my makeup now!

Well...I happen to work for a company that makes cosmetics & we have a super fabulous company store that allows me to get products for a ridiculously cheap price! I probably spend about $20-$30 a month, but if I had to pay retail, it''d be about $100-$150!!! I don''t think I''d be buying these products if I didn''t work here

I don''t spend much on makeup . . . I didn''t wear it at all until I moved to San Diego and the sun started destroying my sensitive skin. Here is what I spend my makeup money on:

1) A good non-soap cleanser
2) A good alchohol free toner
3) Foundation with at least 15 SPF, which I put on every day before going out
4) Blush
5) Lipstick -- this is the only thing I really have several of, all in various shades of pink.

I sometimes will use an eye cream or a moisturizer on my face. And sometimes I use a drugstore brand mascara.

I don''t buy expensive products. The expensive products don''t usually have any special ingredients that are worth the outrageous prices -- and frequently they are bland and ineffective formulations. I buy a lot of Paula''s Choice skin care products, and pretty much stick to Clinique for the foundation and blush. I use Clinique and Revlon lipstick.

I didn''t used to have a regime, but last fall tried a few new products to improve the clarity of skin and what use now and reccommend is:

a) wash face with cetaphil antimicrobial soap
b) loreal clarifying lotion (non alcohol astringent) if needed
c) spot on benzol peroxide where needed
d) cetaphil lotion with 15 spf

Covergirl cover up (it''s in a wand type applicator) to cover blemishes
and lip balm or lipstick (usually loreal)

Once a week I was using the Origins microdermabrasion which makes your skin feel wonderful, but I haven''t been using it as since since being pregnant and skin looking good no matter what I do!

I have bought and people have bought me stuff like mascara, eye liner, blush, etc, but I just dont like using them. The only thing I am considering adding to the regimine is to start grooming my eyebrows, but may wait till after pregnancy to start since skin more sensitive during pregnancy.
I don''t like switching up what I use. If I find a lipstick I like, I use it till it''s gone and forced to buy a replacement, same with fingernail polish. If I want a different look, I''d rather do it through jewelry!

The one good thing about buying the department store brands for me is that I have supersensitive skin...and they allow you to return or exchange it if it doesn''t work for you! I used to have a basket full of drugstore stuff that I couldn''t use and would end up giving away or throwing out!

I have less problems with the Dept store stuff as well? Maybe it''s psychological or they pay more attention to the ingredients? I love the little free gifts that you get with purchase too! I''m such a sucker and have a zillion makeup bags with tiny mascaras!

Well...this past Saturday in my area, a makeup trend show was held at Nordstrom. It is an annual event that my GF and I usually go to each year at this time. She made the arrangements, paid to hold our spots for our makeover at one of the makeup counters, but at the last minute had another one of our friends go with me. My original GF had to be out of town so me and the new GF made due.

The show was great, even though this year I didn''t win any of the freebies like I did last year. Nordstrom always provides a nice breakfast for those attending and a little box, traincase or something special with special samples inside at each seat. On this particular day, there was alot of nice discounts with almost each line that was being represented. To top of the day, Nordstrom gave away a nice traincase and travel rollup to hold jewelry or toiletries when you spent $75 or more in makeup alone that day. For me, this was not a problem.

I purposely wait until this trend show to restock on my face creams or mascaras or lip liners or whatever. And when you do a makeover, you get the $10 back say, if you buy a lipstick and liner. I did do a little damage...I not only bought the 2 or 3 items I was low or out of. but also bought some more body cream, an additional couple of lipsticks and a lip stain. On the flip side, I took BACK something that simply wasn''t for me and also found out that the current foundation I have been using is a 1/2 shade too dark for me so I need to take the wrong one in later today and do a switcheroo.

Could I have saved more? Of course. Did I get what I really needed plus a couple extra things? Yes, but I didn''t go crazy and I am proud of myself. For me, with my skin concerns, I have been advised by a dermatologist what to cheat on and get at the drug store and what I have to look to purchase at a dept. store. I will not compromise on foundation, concealer and my spf coverage. For me, I have a regime that has worked for quite awhile and I do not plan on fixing something that isn''t broke.

My friend...it was her first trend show and she was a bit overwhelmed. She had the makeover and we both had the complimentary facial peel and that was nice. She is not too into makeup, which is totally fine, but she came to the realization that her skin needed some help and she does need to step it up a bit in protection. The "no makeup" look is often at a sacrifice of skin that needs to be exfoliated---really bad--dullness, redness, and uneveness. My friend shared this with me...not me making a judgement call. She is about 10 months older than me, but people often assume she is about 4-6 years older than me and I know that makes her feel bad.

The peel and the results of it made her purchase it. She has fab eyes and found a new easy technique for using shadow so I hope she does it.

All in all, we had fun getting to know each other a little better and just having a girl''s day primping!
