Looking for Houston area Gem Ruby Appraisal

I purchased a ring at an estate sale and want to find out if it is a real ruby...I took it to a jeweler and he told me that he could not tell for sure, but that if it was real that it was very valuable..it is about 8 carats and is set beside two diamonds in a heavy 14 karat gold setting. I do not want to send it off in the mail to get it certified as I do not trust that I will get the same gemstone back if it is indeed a ruby. I live between Houston and Galveston, Texas.
