Is it awful if you don''t get dress cleaned RIGHT after the wedding?

So, our wedding was back in August and the dress is still in my closet. I want to get it cleaned/preserved (outdoor wedding, there are some grass stains along the hem/underside) but all the highly recommended places online are super expensive. It is a silk dress, and I don''t want to take it to any old place to get cleaned.

My husband actually asked me to post to see if we''d be OK waiting a few more months...or if we should get it cleaned ASAP. Mainly because we are on a tight budget at the moment (I''m a student, holiday travel coming up, etc.)

Mine is still hanging in my closet 3.5 years later and it looks fine. One of these days I''m going to get around to getting it cleaned. My MIL was married in the 50s, her dress is hanging in my closet too, it was probably cleaned after her wedding day but nothing has been done to it since and it still looks beautiful.

depends how dirty it is. but it''s been 5 months now so I''m sure if you have any grease or dirt stains they''ve probably soaked in by now, and if you do it now or wait longer it probably won''t make a difference anymore.

i''ll never fully understand the whole "preservation" thing. i personally have put on my wedding dress twice since my october wedding, and have just sat in my living room wearing it. if i had it cleaned/preserved right away, well then how could i do that??

styles will change, i''m sure i''ll never have a family member who is dying to wear my dress, and actually, if i have a daughter, i still want her to experience having her own wedding dress. my veil, which was passed on from my mom, will be the only piece that maybe she could want to wear one day.

so, for now, my dress will stay in our guest room closet, ready for me to put on whenever i feel like it. i might still do a TTD, or even sell it.

I stuffed mine in a garment bag but it hasn''t been cleaned yet. One of these days...though my wedding was only a month ago.

Hi there RZ

I think this completely depends on why you are preserving it... are you putting it up with the notion it will be passed on? 5 months the stains are pretty much in there for good. My wedding was on Halloween this year (sat) and my mom took it to be cleaned and preserved on Monday. They did it 3 times!!!! And they could NOT get all the stains from the mud out of the bottom where the lace was. Mind you it poured all day and the mud was alllll over the dance floor during my reception so I basically stood in muddy dance floor all night, but still that was 2 days later and after 3 cleans a specialist couldn''t get it 100%clean...

At the end of the day like Charbie said, who the heck cares if the stains don''t come out? I hope I never have to wear it again(I''d like to keep my Hubby for a Loooooonnnnngggg time

) and if and when I have a daughter and if and when she wants to wear it, I am sure their will be dry cleaning technology 10x better then today and they will get the dress spick and span.

Long winded post, but at this point if you have already waited a little while to clean it, I''s just say clean and box it when you have the extra cash... the stinky (if your dress is...) will come out when ever, I think the rush to clean is just to get stains out.

Hahaha!! I''m glad I''m not the only one. I got married in June and paid for the cleaning up front. I have not gotten around to getting it cleaned. Which is all a matter of me going and physically dropping it off at the store. We keep saying we will drop it off. Then we say, "maybe this weekend" In my defense, the place is kind of far.

I do not have one, but I don''t think I would ever get it cleaned. Yes, a pristine dress is nice to look at, but for me I would want to keep the stains. The icing, a little dirt, whatever gets on it. Those things were a part of your wedding day too. Why change something about what really happened and what made your day your day.

That is like changing the background in the pictures, or editing your guest list after the fact.

Just my opinion
