I was told that it''s a spessertite but that blue sheen really throws me off. I didn''t think spess would look like that. It was $10/ct and it''s 3 cts so I think I got a decent price whatever it is. The rest of the "spess" cabs were very included and had hints of brown while this stone has neither so of course it jumped out at me. Anyone know of a good way to tell what it is?Date: 10/17/2009 7:24:47 PM

Garnet?
Opal? heehee
I guessed garnet because the first photo the stone is pink while in the rest it''s orange, if it''s a garnet''s it might be one of those spess/pyrope kind? Then I thought it look a lot like an opal/moonstone, but I don''t think many are cut with flat bottoms?Date: 10/17/2009 7:54:52 PM

Some translucent opals are cut with flat bottoms. For example, fire opal, when cut in cabachon, can have a very nice polished bottom.
The first photo made me think "Opal of course!" but in the others it looks like Spess Garnet. Very pretty whatever it is. And it seems like you got a great deal on it!
Congrats!!

Chrysanthemums?
Just some humor.
It''s really pretty - the stone that is.
