Could someone please give me a tutorial of some sort about what all these "street names" mean. The thinking behind is that Russian Cut is the most superior of all these 3 unbranded cuts and that Indian Cut is the most dull i.e least fire, sparkle etc. Is it true that commercially made, ready to wear jewellery pieces from B&M typically use the worst cut, and reap the most $$$ out of unsuspecting consumers?

Since the emergence of H&A to the market a few years back, I don''t hear jewellers say if the diamonds are belgium cut or whatever. It''s as if, it''s embarrassing to even mention CUT when they are no where near H&A standards.

Pre Glasnost Russians cut by the text book with little regard for yeild. Russian was the best cut.

Belgium has very little cutting today - some is very good - most is pre prepared and sent to Asia for finishing.

A few years back all Indian and most Isralei diamonds were sold thru Belguim as Belgian Cut - or the better cut stones as Russian Cut.

Today it does not matter much as there are terrible and beuatiful diamonds cut everywhere.

Buy the diamond and not the location - that is the best advice.

Where a stone is cut has no more relation to the quality of the cut. At least not in what is observable in the finished product.

There definitely still is a difference in yield, but that is only of concern for the manufacturer.

The difference in cut-quality depends upon the goals and the organisation of the manufacturer. The cutting might be anywhere in the world for that matter.

Therefore, you can still find very nicely cut Russian-cuts, a growing percentage of high quality Indian-cuts and in bigger stones, still more than Gary thinks, mostly Belgian-cut stones.

Thank you for that succint explanation. You are a CUT guru for a reason.

But if we take away the country names for a second, and think where in the world has the best technology to perfect the cut, where would it be? It does seem that the supply chain of diamonds in this time and day, extends beyond the geographical boundaries of its source, and it is indeed immaterial where the rough was mined. So, this is something not on my mind. Focussing on where it is cut and finally finished up, perhaps can give a clue about the cut quality? yes, no?

The easy way out is of course to buy only certified diamonds from GIA and AGS? :)

Just like diamonds, technology can travel worldwide. Even experience, an often under-estimated part of the equation, can travel to other parts of the world.

What remains is goal-setting, and how dedicated one is to realise this goal. A manufacturer never has cut-quality as an unique goal. It is always combined with the goal of retaining weight.

How that results in the final product depends on three factors, the technology used, the experience and the sophistication and requirements of his customers.
