If a stranger ask you...how big is that diamond on your finger? Is it real?

Honestly I would just laugh awkwardly and uncertainly. I really wouldn’t want to tell a complete stranger if my bling is real or fake, but I also can’t imagine a rank stranger actually asking.

I have been asked if a bracelet I was wearing (with small coloured stones, chunky but not expensive) was real by an acquaintance; and I had no response to give. Luckily she gave the response for me, going from “omg that bracelet is stunning!! Is it real???” To “no no of course it isn’t, I knew that, it would cost a fortune if it was real. I totally get it.” So no reply/response needed from me!

They could claim it's theirs and most people would logically assume they are telling the truth. The burden of proof would fall on me.

I’ve had people ask to look at my ring, (in a secure setting) but I don’t think anyone’s asked me if it was real, I think they assume it is. If a random stranger in the street asked me, I’d say of course it’s not real and hurriedly walk on.

The only person who’s tried on my ring since I’ve owned it is my DIL, because she knows Bella will be hers someday.

See, THIS is why I am never offended when stuff like this happens to me - we have all had our.... well, not our best moments. So, I choose to believe this is 99% of my interactions along these lines.

I did this yesterday at a bridal shower. What a dorky geek I can be. The young girl has a small European cut diamond. I asked her if she had the flower facets in the center. She said she didn’t know. She never looked at it under a loupe. I asked her if she wanted to see it. She said yes..so I pulled my loupe out of my purse and let her have a look…but after I looked. OMG..I’m so embarrassed. Hahahaha

This made me laugh and reminded me of a happy memory of my MIL. She never left the house without her loupe. Jewelry stores would walk away for a second to get her one and she would have her loupe out and was already inspecting before they returned.

Not only that, but the police don't consider it theft at that point so you are on your own. (Or at least the small city I grew up in was that way...)

Right-- if I handed it to them voluntarily they could hardly be charged with theft. They could even claim it was a gift. I would not expect much sympathy from law enforcement, either. It would be a civil matter.
An entirely avoidable problem, and the cost of hiring a lawyer could exceed the value of the jewelry.

There are a lot of people who don't realize diamonds come in colors other than white! I've gotten a lot of people who see my yellow diamond bracelet and ring and ask what are they/are they real/etc. I'm happy to talk about all the colors diamonds come in, rarity, etc... that usually diverts into a less-awkward discussion about gems in general. Often it seems like the people who notice are thinking of getting engaged or are recently engaged...
