Can someone post the aboslute ideal specs for a princess cut?

Ignoring colour, carat and clarity, I''m wondering about cut. Specifically:

Table %
Depth %
Cutlet
Girdle

Thanks in advance!

there are no absolute ideal specs for a princess.
ags lab starting giving princess cuts ''ideal'' grades last year, but there are no published standards on what makes ideal since different looks can all do well. if you want a princess that is sure to perform, get a princess with an ags grading report that has an ''0'' in light performance.

Thanks for your input. That''s a very useful chart.

Should I be concerned if a GIA (or other similar certificate) is a few years old (e.g. 2004)?

Thanks in advance,

No. In fact, AGS did not grade princess cuts until late 2005, so you may find a true gem in a GIA graded stone with a cetificate before then!

Actually, before AGS launched the grading-system, the fact that there were no standards just led to an over-supply of low-performing princesses.

Talking to the scientists at AGS this week, I learned that they estimate that non AGS-graded princesses at the best would get an AGS-2. The average is probably somewhere around AGS-5.

AGS really put us on another planet with their research and cutting guidelines. As a result, one can say that it it extremely unlikely to cut an AGS-0 bij accident.

Thanks for everybody''s help to this point. It''s much appreciated.

I''m hoping to get your collective input for a ring with the following specs:

Princess cut
Measurements: 5.85 x 5.62 x 3.72mm
Carat weight: 1.03
Polish: very good
Symmetry: very good
Color: G
Flourescence: none
Clarity: VS1
Table: 70.2%
Crown height: 9.6%
Girdle: medium (1.9%)
Total depth: 66.2%
Cutlet: none

I''m not looking for the steal of the century but I''m trying to figure out:

a) Is this a good stone
b) What''s a fair price

Thanks in advance!

a) shallow (double check your depth and table?)
b) "Pricescope your diamond" tool at the top of the page

Thanks Julie.

I''ve double-checked the table and depth and they are 70.2% and 66.2%.

I''m assuming that by shallow you mean the depth is low? Can you recommend a more ideal %?

Thanks,

I''m a little confused. I''ve looked at this link: http://www.gemappraisers.com/oldcutgraderules.asp but through other research, I''ve heard that the table should be at least 5% higher than the depth. Doesn''t this 5% rule and the table conflict? An ideal table (62-68%) would require a depth of 57-63%.

Is this 5% differential a falsehood?

Thanks

Yes, that''s a falsehood. If you gave me something that sounded like a myth rooted in some truth, it would be the table should be at least 5% LESS than the depth. Which isn''t too bad of a rule to go by, except that the 5% is completely arbitrary.

Thanks Julie. Perhaps I''ve mixed up the table and the depth.

How about this instead:

Princess cut
Measurements: 5.82 x 5.58 x 3.88mm
Carat weight: 1.06
Polish: excellent
Symmetry: very good
Color: G
Flourescence: none
Clarity: VS1
Table: 69.8%
Crown height: 9.0%
Girdle: thin to medium (2.2%)
Total depth: 69.5%
Cutlet: none

Thanks!

I apologize for the constant questions - what can I say, I''m nervous!

Are these readily available from online vendors (Dirt Cheap, Monderra, Blue Nile, Whiteflash) or is this something I can only get from visiting a dealer?

What should I be looking for in this report?

Thanks,
PIG

You should look for a lot of red, a sprinkling of black, and minimal white.

Yes, JA/DCD, WF, GOG will provide Ideal Scope images. Blue Nile can't. No idea about Mondera (guessing no?)

Thanks Julie - those look good and are definitely beating the prices I''ve been able to get.

Is "pointed" and "none" one-in-the-same with respect to cutlet?

Thanks

Yes. Or close. Either is fine.

The second Whiteflash stone and the third one are the best of the four listed.
