Good questions, Storm! Are they all off the top of your head?

One of the presidents who was shot (and assassinated) while in office was on his way to his 25th alumni reunion at my alma mater, which is probably the only reason I ever remember him.

Lyndon Johnson. I would have said Taft, but no one remembers Taft.

Which US presidents where shot while in office? (6)

Mckinley
Kennedy
Ford
Reagan
Lincoln
Garfield?

Which US presidents where assassinated while in office? (4)

The above minus Ford and Reagan

Which US president was saved when a grenade malfunctioned after being thrown at him?

I can't even make a joke about this one. No idea.

Alaska for earthquake

for the grenade, it needs to be a president who actually served in a war, and a war in which grenades existed.

Eisenhower in WWI?

I hope everyone knew my Lyndon Johnson answer was a joke. The thought of Lyndon Johnson fighting a duel struck me as incredibly humorous. No one was fighting duels in the 1960''s.

The idea of Taft fighting a duel is even funnier-wasn't he grossly obese?
ETA: my guess for the duelist is Andrew Jackson.

Your close on the second one, one wrong.

Hint on the duels.. most history books say 13 but it may have been over 20.
They were mostly over remarks made about his wife and marriage.

He weighed 300 lbs or so and had to have a special bath tub brought into the White House. I didn''t think anyone was going to conjure up that picture when I said, "Taft", however. You''re a sharp one, Selkie :).

Alaska is correct.
The President it was thrown at was president when it happened.

Oh, of course! Bush, in Georgia (not the state) a couple years ago. Although...according to some news reports, it was already inactive, and was thrown or placed where it was more as a threat than an actual assassination attempt.

I was ~18 meters away which is just within the kill radius of 15-20 meters.

Hee...you WERE?? Sorry, I know it''s a typo, but it certainly changes the whole story!!

That''s interesting...I didn''t hear about the FBI''s findings of the investigation, I just googled the CNN and Fox news reports, which played down the incident.

OK, Storm, now fill in the blanks with the correct answers, please. Leaving them sprinkled throughout the thread above is untidy. I want the answer page all in one place.

The presidents who come to my mind regarding the most duels are Alexander Hamilton and Andrew Jackson.
It was Andrew Jackson, Hamilton would likely be the second most as well as being killed in one. A lot of them were not recorded because unless it was seen as someone getting in a lot of them it was considered normal.

Jackson married his wife when she was still married because her divorce papers were not properly finalized.
After 2 years her x-husband caused problems and the divorce was finalised and her and Jackson were legally married.

If anyone mentioned it or even seemed too be mentioning it Jackson challenged them to a duel.

So I would have gotten all the shot and assassinated presidents correct if I hadn't tried to come up with a sixth one! I guessed Gerald Ford (as well as the correct ones) because I remember he was attacked while in office. By Squeaky Fromme? I think she was "wrestled to the ground" by Secret Service agents. I will have to go look this up now. The only reason I remember it as well as I do (and we may find that that is not at all!) is because there were endless Saturday Night Live jokes about President Ford being attacked by people with odd objects and their having to be "wrestled to the ground" by Secret Service agents!

(Why yes, I AM a giant know-it-all! Why do you ask?

). I thought it was a great quiz. Jackson actually killed a guy named Dickinson in one of those duels.
