Hi,

Can some one please help me understand the markings on this ring? I acquired it from my grandmother after she passed away.

It looks like the two oval marks indicate the silver composition - 950/1000 parts silver. This is a purer silver than sterling (.925), but it’s also softer and easier to deform. The “A.” Is probably the maker’s initial. I’d guess, from the construction, that this ring was made by an amateur or a jewelry making student. The stone looks like polished jasper.

Is it possible that your grandmother, grandfather, or maybe one of their kids made the ring? In a school art class, maybe? (My Jr. high art teacher had stone polishing equipment, but as I recall we “set” the stones by gluing them into inexpensive. Pre-made settings. I made my father a tie clip using a piece of jasper that I polished!)
