Hey ladies, I''d love your feedback on a situation that is a little Hangout, a little Rocky Talky, a little Shopping, and a little Show Me The Ring all at once!

My fiance recently purchased the book, "The World Without Us", and found it intriguing enough to recommend it to me. For those who are unfamiliar with it, the author explores the question of what would happen to the Earth''s ecology and man-made structures if humans disappeared overnight. It''s a fascinating read. A few chapters in, the author takes the reader to Africa, and discusses the history of the Tsavo Region of Kenya, and we were sitting side-by-side when I turned to it and said,

Me: Hey! This chapter on elephants is set in the Tsavo Region in Kenya!
Him: So?
Me: "So"? We''ve talked about the Tsavo region!
Him: We have?
Me: Yes! Remember when I first began visiting that jewelry website and learned all about tsavorite?
Him: Uhh... no?
Me (excitedly): Yes, tsavorites! They''re these really beautiful green stones. I''ve always loved the look of them-- there was this one stunner in one of those hardbound Tiffany catalogues once that was to die for-- but I learned in all my diamond forum reading and those colored-stone specialist websites that structurally speaking, they''re actually a type of garnet! I had always been so disappointed that garnet was my birthstone, because all the garnet I had been exposed to growing up was that dull brownish-red stuff. But garnet also comes in a green grossular variety! It''s because of the Chromium suspended within. Chromium in stones results in green, like I love, and tsavorites have a fairly uncommon hardness of 7.5 with a particularly high refractive index. And that great chromium-given green color! Anyhow, they only come from *ONE* place on earth, the Tsavo Region in Kenya, and Chapter 6 of this book you recommended is set there! How cool!
-----------------

Now, I assumed the story would end there, and I had forgotten about this conversation. This last weekend, FI and I went out of town for the long weekend to celebrate the anniversary of when we met. (Sweet, right?

He can be so cute.) When we returned to the hotel after dinner, I walked in to discover a ''Little Blue Box'' sitting on the duvet. (Wheeee!) I swear, I almost passed out right there; he''s a great guy, gorgeous, smart, accomplished, and sweet, but you''d NEVER mistake him for one of those jewelry-appreciating guys discussing faceting angles in Rocky Talky, and I certainly wasn''t expecting a gift on top of the trip. Picturing a keyring or something, I was gobsmacked when I opened the box to reveal-- a ring with a little tsavorite embedded in it!
1.gif
[He had, the day after our conversation, called up Tiffany to see if they carried tsavorites, was told they did, traced the inside of the e-ring he gave me while I was still sleeping (heh heh, TOLD YA he wasn''t a Rocky Talky sort of guy if he didn''t even know his fiancee''s ring size) then spent about 90 seconds in the store to actually purchase it. Heck, I didn''t even know Tiffany''s had any tsavorites other than the "significant pieces" in the NYC store on 5th, let alone stock pieces.]

So I have this great sentimentality for this little ring-- it''s not only my first tsavorite, but my fiance had been able to successfully battle the urge to tune out while I was talking about jewelry!-- but unfortunately it''s not the right size and I need to exchange it. Since I need to get a different size anyway, I really could use your help in deciding,

On which finger would you wear a simple band like this?:

1. left pinky? (Or will it bump my ering and drive me crazy?)

2. right ring finger? (I typically wear a pretty blingy diamond ''power piece'' on this finger or a diamond rolling ring, so something this thin/small might come off as small)

3. right pinky finger? (But will it scratch up horribly as I am right handed?)

4. right middle finger?

I''m hoping to time it so I can take care of this when I go to the new Neiman Marcus + Louis Vuitton + Jimmy Choo stores opening extravaganza tomorrow at Topanga... so ladies, on which finger do you think a right-handed, enfianced woman should wear a ring like this?

Awww! Your FI is an absolute sweetie!

As for where to wear it, I personally don''t like wearing rings next to each other because when I put my fingers together (like in a fist), they sort of "grind" and roll over each other. It feels really weird, but if you can get used to it, I''d put it on your middle finger.

Oh, that is so sweet! Kudos to your FI on being a great, thoughtful guy!

I''d vote right middle finger: I generally wear a ring on my middle finger and my ring finger, and it doesn''t bother me, but the pinky rubbing does (then again, I have recessive crooked pinkies, so you might be luckier on that count), and it seems a shame to not be able to wear your usual pieces.

How sweet! I believe the person who discovered Tsavorite was working for Tiffany.

Hey, we''re ring twins!

I also have that Elsa Peretti stacking band with a tsav, and I can''t tell you how much time I spent messing around with it and trying to figure out what to do because of the size. I highly recommend that you try them on before you make the exchange. Mine is a *7* according to Tiffany, but according to all of the jewelers I have talked it it''s about a 6.25. I wear mine on my left ring finger, but the original plan was to wear it on my right ring finger. When the weather cools down and my fingers shrink a bit, I''ll wear it on my right hand.

I personally think it''s too delicate to wear on a middle finger-but this is probably because I bang my middle fingers into things a lot. And I can''t stand having rings on my pinkies, so that rules that option out.

So I''d vote for right ring finger.

I have a thread with pics of it around here somewhere. I think it was called, "I like green." or something silly like that. The "I take it back, I love green" one is a 1-ish ct tourmaline.

If it were mine it would be on my ring finger or pinky. I tend to like lengthening marquise shapes and other "statement" shapes on my middle finger.

What a sweet sweetie!

Aww, what a gorgeous strory ! I haven''t seen these in person, so will defer to Freke as she owns one. I agree the best course of action would be to try them on in the store and see what suits you best.
Congrats on your pretty new sparkly !

Aw, thank you all for your sweet feedback. I''m hoping he''s a keeper too, or else I''m in trouble!

I tried the original ring on a couple of fingers to see if I liked the look, and being a good PS''er I took some pictures. You know, not because SMTR is **** for girls and I wanted to "add to the library for future generations", but rather for the scientific purpose of having the two-dimensional angle for maximum analytical purposes.

Close up on otherwise nude left hand. It''s a size 4 on a size 2.5 pinky, but I thought a close-up real world shot might also interest those lurkers who have been thinking about ordering one.

Last photo for now, trying it out on my right hand next to a commonly worn diamond RHR to see if it was the type of thing that would look okay on a pinky while my ring finger was, err, otherwise occupied. I think it became clear from the photos that it wouldn't, so off to Tiffany's I went to follow Arjunajane's and Geckodani's great advice to go to the store and try out all of the options in person.

I will say, though, the color of the green is rather pretty and it's quite neat how much light such a little stone is able to generate!

(P.S. I recall seeing threads asking about "finger lipo" but these high-def photos make me wonder: is there such a thing as "Knuckle Restylane"?

By the way, MonkeyPie, Circe, Vita*dolce, arjunajane, geckodani, and Julesbeth, thank you for the kind words about my FI! I was so touched and thought my fiance would get a little surge of happiness to see such wonderful words written about him so I let him read the site. Indeed they did-- in fact, he walked around a little bit straighter and with a smile across his face for the rest of the night!

SDLady, I''m so glad you responded, because in fact I thought of you not too long after he gave it to me. I rarely bother to log in, but since my fiance and I head down to San Diego a few times a year I find myself definitely reading those reviews of various shops and restaurants you so thoughtfully post on your hometown. We returned by driving up the 163(?) for the first time (for me, FI lived in SD for years), and as we passed by Fashion Valley I thought I recalled you reviewing a new Jimmy Choo store there and toyed with the idea of pulling off to see their latest wares.

Alas, I guess I was still under the sweet narcotic of the Little Blue Box, because my fiance''s face turned a little green at the thought of shopping and I couldn''t do that to him. (Boys!) Well, that, and he was looking forward to checking out the Temecula Wineries for the first time. After trying the really young wines there, we probably should have taken the time to out to stop at FV.

Harriet and Freke, actually I''m *very* glad you weighed in. I would love to ask you some detailed questions about each of your colored stone buying experiences, and Freke, what a DELIGHT to discover that I''m your "Ring Twin"! I''m honored! (Hey, does that mean I can borrow some of your great shoes?
