Ha! Yes, Pirard, it is a bit of a maze. I know someone with a first degree in physics from York and that's a BA. York only gives BAs even for purely science degrees.
Then of course if you get a bachelors from Oxford or Cambridge and don't die for a few years you can almost automatically get a masters. (But people who do that do get laughed at these days)
Classes of degree are defined by the final marks plus performance throughout the three or so years. A first used to be only awarded very rarely for someone outstanding (I used to class first class as far better than I could ever produce at the very least). an upper second class
is good but not genius, a lower second class (a two-two) is average. A third is a pass but you've spent your time on anything but work and below that is a fail.
Sadly with the grade inflation caused by publishing league tables of universities based on the grades of graduates everyone now thinks they should get a first and far more do.
