Lots of great input on here--I'm sure you're more confused than when you started ;-)

Keep in mind that there are "fancy" sapphires out there too, in just about every color of the rainbow. I'm assuming you're looking for blue, though, like others have said. Someone mentioned Madagascar sapphires if you don't mind a bit o' green. Australian sapphires are also out there, some a fine blue, others have a yellow color stone which can turn the overall color towards teal. Some are split right down the middle (many Aussie sapphires are yellow/blue "particolor" stones)!

For another input on sapphire weight, I cut an Aussie sapphire a bit ago into a fat pear shape, 7.3mm wide x 9.8mm long, and the final weight was 1.98 cts. You can also play around with the Carat Weight Estimator like this one from Dendritics: http://dendritics.com/scales/carat-weight.asp
