Hi guys,

First time ever buying a diamond and I''ve been researching a lot.
Thinking of getting a diamond from Good Old Gold.... already had my mind set on one of their diamonds when I read an article on the site about digging and painting of the girdle and realized the diamond I wanted wasn''t really that ideal.

Since then, I''ve found another 2 diamonds I''m keen on. However, I''m now a bit paranoid as to whether I have missed something again. Would greatly appreciate it if anyone can give me some feedback on these 2 diamonds and also recommend which gives the better bang for the buck.

FYI, I''m essentially looking for a 1 carat, good cut and colour, eye clean.

Appreciate any help I can get!

Both are slightly dug, and painted, but the effects are so very very slight and are great stones

Thanks. I think they are a lot better than my original choice where the effects can be seen on the ideal scope

Waiting for my ideal scope to be delivered so that I can check out some of the B&M places in the city, but I''m not sure I''ll be able to get as good a deal as at GoG.

You have learned well.
That stone has been painted a lot, not drastically, but to the point that it would be possible to see a difference.
Some people would prefer it, some would not.

Garry: how do you recognize digging/painting in these stones? By the images or the proportions? I asked this in a different thread but it has been long since buried and I can''t find it. Thanks

you see little differences in the vee shaped patterns at the minor facet junction on the crown in the ideal-scope images.
Then you can see the helium report and there is a section for crown and pavilion minor facet painting and digging which shows the degree and character (i.e painting and or digging).
One of the GOG stones - the second I think - has both painting on the crown side and digging on the pavilion side which more or less cancel each other out.
It is rather complex I am afraid.

Hi maseraki.

Garry''s right on. For clarification, when diamonds are not GIA graded we measure the painting/digging (as well as other features) with the Helium Scanner and apply an "estimated GIA Cut Grade" based on that criteria on each diamond as well as how the diamond fares in AGS proprietary light performance grading software so you have there at your fingertips pertinent knowledge before pulling the trigger. The other stones you listed fare excellently in both systems while the first fared well in AGS'' for light performance but not GIA''s.

Thanks Garry.

Peace,
