Ok, here''s the plan. FF and I are considering going to Las Vegas NV for a few days for some R&R and to look at wedding venues after the semester is over. We''re thinking about going December 17-20 (Wednesday through Saturday) because that''s when LV rooms are the cheapest. The catch is that we have to use Southwest airlines because my mom has frequent flyer miles with them, and I''ll be using that to travel. FF won''t be.

So we''re looking for a hotel on the Strip that has rooms around $80 or so a night. We don''t want to stay at the Excalibur, and we don''t have enough $ to stay at anything like The Venetian, Bellagio, or Wynn, so those are obviously out. I was leaning towards Treasure Island, but I''m not sure why because I''ve only been there once.

Do you have any cheapish hotels on the Strip that you''d like to recommend?

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Places i''ve stayed (and i''m cheap!!)
Sarahah - the Nascar themed hotel. I thought it was fairly decent for its price (i think i saw some rooms for around 60-80). its obviously within walking distances to most of the other hotels on the main strip as well.

Imperial - barf puke yuk. but the bell boys are nice.

there was one other i stayed at, but for the life of me i cannot think where. i want to say Paris but im not sure. I know it was right around there (as well as the imperial). It was nice, from what i *hic* remember

Ditto the paris, though I think we paid $90, we had booked last minute for an emergency wedding.

Can you maybe call the places you''re considering as venues and see if they''ll give you a nice ''preview'' rate for coming out to see them?

The sahara is listing on hotels.com for $40/night for those dates. The monte carlo is showing $78, Bally''s $72. Harrah''s is listing at $60.

The Bellagio is only listing at $165, I would totally lean on them to give you a sweet rate if they''re on your list of contenders.

That''s a great idea Merco. We''re looking at Planet Hollywood and Mandalay Bay. I''ll look at those later, because I hadn''t even considered them until you brought that up...and I have to go to class now.

travelzoo.com

check out the offers on their site- note that these are mostly DIRECT deals with the hotels/casinos. That''s usually the way to get the best deal- not going thru expedia.com or some other middleman. Their weekly top 20 email is the best- i''ve scored some terrific travel deals using it! i also sign up with each individual hotel/casino to get their deals sent to me via email.

We''re going this weekend and have two reservations- one at the monte carlo for $240 and one at the luxor for $225 (total for 2 nites!) i''m gonna pull the trigger on one by tomorrow, but will do one last check around.

We do Vegas twice a year and usually go for something a bit plush (like Mandalay Bay, Bellagio or The Hotel), but we''re doing this trip on the super cheap as we just got back from Kauai.

Planet Hollywood is fine (and there is a shopping mall attached). Mandalay Bay is out of the way for me (especially in the winter when you can''t use their pools). I love Bally''s and the Flamingo. Bally''s is attached to the Paris - so you have access to both Hotels and Casinos without having to walk outside (and costs way less than staying at the Paris).

Equivelant to a Ramada Inn, but cheap and to be honest great location and fun Karaoke bar. I went there for a week long business training, super fun.

Since I''m in charge of making hotel reservations, the top choices are: Luxor, NY, NY, Monte Carlo and Treasure Island.

This is the price breakdown for the dates we''ll be there (minus taxes and fees and other stuff):

Treasure Island
$69 Wed/Thurs $89 on Friday
Total-$227

Luxor
$65 Wed/Thurs $90 on Friday
Total-$220

NY, NY
$70 Wed/Thurs $80 on Friday
Total-$220

Monte Carlo
$70 Wed/Thurs $90 on Friday
Total: $230

Hiya! You have good top choices. I''d also look into MGM. We''re going next week, and are paying $69 a night, and it includes $20 credits to food/entertainment, slots etc.

Holy cr*p clop! How did you get that kind of deal? The cheapest I've found on their calendar (which I'm sure is just the going rates) would be $90!

Hiya FrekeChild! Check out the above link. See when the front page was last updated, then go to the last pages to see updated promos.

Also try the "$20 tip/upgrade" when you get there. Tipping the front desk usually gives you an upgraded room; it's worked twice out of two tries for me.

There were some pretty awesome deals recently, not sure if they're still available or for the dates your going, but it's definitely worth it to check out. Good luck!

eta try all the links - even if the promo has the same name, there are different deals. ex "summer getaway" has 4 different links, some are $69, some are $99 etc.

Just checked, Luxor is coming up $59 and $69 for your dates. The $69 rate has $30 in credits, $59 has none.

All of those are fine - Treasure Island has the best location (in my opinion).

Hubby stayed at the Luxor, but had to do a TON of walking. He liked the hotel though.

Clop- many THANKS for that link. those are some AWESOME deals. too bad that we're just hours late to cancel our reservation for this weekend and book one of these. Oh well- i bookmarked it for next time!

Freke, I second LAJ's vote for Treasure Island. location is good and it's the "nicest" of the bunch. Monte Carlo is a strong second.

FChild: just to mention old Vegas. Its more quiet so may not be for you.
Golden Nugget has a great show not to be missed (great for couples)
They have a new wing in case you are considering to stay there.
Also not to be missed evening shows in old Vegas especially on weekends.
So even if you don''t stay there just go to the show and enjoy the street shows. They are really good.

I vote for Monte Carlo. I''ve stayed there 3 times, and loved it.

Luxor was so-so. But I didn''t stay in the newly renovated towers. The rooms were just OK. I think the renovated ones are a lot nicer.

Stratosphere is SUPER cheap, but way down at the yucky end of the strip. Sometimes you can get rooms there for 30/night. It was an average casino, but the rooms were nicer than the room we had at the Luxor.

Just don''t stay at Circus Circus!!!

I've been to Vegas five times and just want to recommend that if you go ultra cheap be sure the hotel is one that was built AFTER they quit allowing you to smoke in the rooms. A friend had a VIP to an older hotel and we got free rooms and they smelled horrible.

If I remember correctly it was Harrahs!

The luxor is nice. When DH and I eloped 10 years ago, that is where we stayed. I'm pretty sure it was brand new back then.

Thanks ladies!

We certainly aren''t the average mid-twenties couple that you''d probably think of going to Vegas. FF doesn''t drink because he has a heart condition and I only drink in Vegas--but not that much. We don''t gamble either. So party hotels are certainly not for us.

I ended up making reservations at the Mirage because I could get them cheaper than I could the cheapest rooms at Treasure Island. I think it''s got a great location, and I got a pretty good deal on it to. Thanks to clop for posting that site!!!!

Treasure Island & NY, NY are both really nice - I''ve stayed at both. I like the location of TI better though - on the Central Strip, you can walk to more clubs, restaurants, shopping, etc. At NY, NY, you have to cab everywhere to get to the central or upper strip.

The Mirage is great too, and also on the Central Strip - great location. It has an awesome zoo at the hotel, also - white tigers, dolphins, alpacas, etc., great if you like animals.

Mirage is a great choice. It is connected to Treasure Island by a shuttle, and I think the Beatles LOVE show is there. The Fashion Square Mall is right on the other side of Treasure Island - and the Wynn and Venetian are across the street. You''ll have a great time.

ps. I don''t gamble either (except for sports betting), but I LOVE the Wheel of Fortune! I always get pretty lucky.

FF and I are not an average 20something couple, either. We hardly drink, don''t go to clubs, and gamble sparingly.

However, we DID go see the Beatles LOVE while we were there last. It was the best thing I''ve ever seen. I swear it changed my life.

If you have the means, SEE IT. We are going to LV again for Thanksgiving (my parents live in LV) and considering seeing it a second time.

We are staying at The Orleans - there is a Basketball tournament there on Friday and Saturday that DH are attending. We get there Wednesday night and depart early Sunday morning.
