Hi everyone,
I''ve read a couple of threads here talking about polishing/chamfering of the corners on princess cuts to hopefully reduce the chances of getting chipped. I''ve purchased a princess cut from an online vendor and am having a custom setting done locally. Is this something that can only be done by the cutter? Or can a local jeweller do this at the same time the diamond is being set?

Suggestions?

The process of making flattened points on a princess cut should be done by a diamond cutter. It can be done by someone with a bit of expertise who is not a real cuuter, but whoever does this must accept any risk. You won''t be covered for any inadvertant damage, so pick very carefully who is to do this for you.

Chamfering should only be done with the right equipment, and that normally means a diamond cutter will be involved.

Chamfered corners are advisable and will definitely lessen the propensity of the corners to chip, but remember that the expertise of the setter remains of paramount importance: The seats must be cut correctly and the diamond must be set exactly level. If the seats are not correct or the diamond is not level the result of that setting will be uneven pressure, and the only way for that pressure to give is by the diamond cleaving, whether the corners are chamfered or not.
