I hope this isn''t a silly question...Can the prongs on a ring''s head can be replaced?

I''ve had a few setting issues with the three-stone ring I''m making. The head is now the right size for the stones (yay!!), but I wonder if the stones are sitting too low.

Would replacing the prongs allow the jeweler to set the stones higher? Or am I just making that up? Is that a complex/difficult job?

Thanks for your help!

Okay, I''m attaching a side view of the ring to see what y''all think. Do you think the stones are a bit low (especially the center one)? If so, could it be fixed by re-pronging(?) with longer prongs and setting the stone(s) higher?

I really do love the ring.

As always, thanks for all of your help!

Honey, it would be more than prongs ... I think there''s a basket in that setting too, which would need to be moved higher and whatever you do, I don''t believe you can just "replace" prongs. Metal loses its strength and integrity when it''s soldered or changed or "tacked" on ... I think that whole ring would need to be remade to accomplish setting the stones higher. But I''m no expert.

Honestly I''m not sure the lines of the ring would be so graceful with stones set higher either. Those stones are set in a perfect arc with the ring .. moving them up changes the whole look/design.

What are you trying to accomplish, showcase the stone w/less regard to the overall "look"?

I think I''m just not used to the low-profile look of the setting. My e-ring is set pretty high, so maybe that''s become "normal" to me. I guess I felt that the diamonds would seem more prominent if set higher. But again, maybe it''s just being used to a different sort of style.

And, yeah, I did wonder if I was deluding myself about replacing just the prongs.

Maybe I just need to live with it for a bit and see if it''s just the newness/differentness of it all. Did I mention that I love the ring, height question aside?

I just got a prong replaced on my wedding band, and it was not a big deal at all. They call it retipping. I''m not sure if that is the same as what you need though. Also, soldering does not make gold lose its integrity. That is just a myth.

Thanks for the info, Singer. I just did a quick search with "retipping" and found some Pricescope members who retipped to make their stones sit higher in the setting. Not sure if it''s the right solution for me--or if the setting is fine as-is and I''m just not used to it-- but now I''m armed with a little more information. Thanks!

Ask your jeweler what he/she suggests. I personally like settings that have a bit of height to them, but then again, I really do like how your ring''s profile looks as is.

its funny you asked this....my mom just called and was saying how her ring kept snagging everything -so she took it to get looked at and 12 diamonds were oose ( it is an old antique ring from her grandmother) ...so she is getting all of the prongs replaced...she said it was 18 dollars for the first one,...and 10 for every one after that..so , yes you can get them fixed :)

WOW! Whatever you decide it''s a VERY VERY beautiful ring!

I love the band. Could we see a picture from the top to get a feel for the size of the diamonds in relation to the band?

Here''s a top view of the ring. I plan to post it with some hand pics (as soon as I''m totally sure about the prong height thing!) in SMTR sooooooooon.

I''ve posted just a couple of times about the journey of this ring. Here''s a link to the story for those who are interested.

It''s a three-stone Jubilee/Square Hearts & Arrows. I adore it!!

Here''s another top-view shot. Might be a teensy bit better:

The ring is gorgeous and tastefully set.

I would wear it for a couple weeks before you do anything radical. You might just find that you like it, once you get past your preconceptions.

If not, you can always have it done down the road.

The Jubilee and Square Hearts & Arrows stones are amaaaaaaaaazing. I''ve never seen anything like them. So brilliant and fiery. The ring setting and workmanship are wonderful, too.

Good advice about giving the new-to-me look a longer test drive. That way I can make sure I''m not just reacting to seeing something different than what I''m used to.

Thanks!!
