anyone can have a stone graded by gia. someone outside the trade would be best served by having this done through a jeweler.

We just did this Nov 05 directly through GIA and it was very easy. Called the number listed on their website for the NY lab -- and they give you specific instructions detailing what you need to do. The charge was 175 for our stone, 5 for handling, and 25 for return shipping. You have to ship it to them USPS registered and it took about 2 weeks including shipping time to get our stone and the new lab cert back.

Belle,

This may have changed slightly. GIA used to give a discount to members of the trade so it was possible for a jeweler to both make a few bucks and give the customer a discount over what they would have needed to pay if they sent it in directly. This changed a few weeks ago as part of their solutions to the ''certifigate'' scandal. GIA now charges the same fees to everyone. It''s still necessary to have the stone pulled and reset from any mounting, which for most people involves a jeweler, but for already unmounted stones it may now be better to do it directly. Many people may still find it convenient to have a jeweler in the middle who is familar with the transaction and this may very well be worth it but it''s no longer cheaper.

Hi Ronda. If your purpose is just independent analysis to verify the diamond's details or for insurance purposes I'd suggest having an appraisal done. Faster, less expensive (in many cases) and depending on the appraiser you may get even more information. Pricescope has a list of approved appraisers and several post regularly here.

If you are interested in the GIA paper specifically, you can contact them at 800-421-7250. Have the details, as you know them, available.
