Are celeb diamonds real?

Given how fast they seem to get engaged and either break it off or get divorced, how many of those giant rings do you think are the real deal?

Do you remember when the reality TV star with the flesh-beard ... Spencer something? ... got engaged to the blonde lady who apparently plays Trilby to her plastic surgeon's Svengali? Well, he apparently got something like an amethyst and tried to pass it off as a pink diamond. The tabloids dined out on it for WEEKS.

Given the possibility for the news to get out and the onus we still put on non-traditional engagement choices (not to mention the obscenely high salaries), I'd bet they're mostly real.

I think they're real. Hollywood is a material world, and I think big diamonds are pretty much the norm. Some celebs may use replicas for insurance purposes, but even that I kind of doubt. It seems too practical.

I don't know about Hollywood celebs, but I've heard that some football wives spot fakes.

I think they're real... these celebs do receive whopping sums of money after all. Also, maybe in some cases, they get the ERs for a real bargain because the jewelry brands want the free advertising. I don't know why they even bother getting married though, the concept certainly doesn't seem to mean much to them.

I'm sure that many of them are real, but I'd be willing to bet that there is a fair-share of fakes out there too. I have a close friend of my family who is a multi-millionaire and many of her diamonds are fake. She wears them because everyone just assumes that with her money, they're real.

I agree with the previous post that real or not, some celebs may not choose to wear their baubles all the time (which seems almost a waste of some good shiny!) For example I just always remember hearing that Beyonce *rarely* ever wears her real e-ring from Jay-Z in public and on the few times she has, it's always been a huge deal.

I believe most big celebs get jewels at cost or for very little from the designer they say made the ring. It's all for publicity, for both parties. They get a nice rock and the jeweler gets advertising. I'm always amazed at the stated worth of the ring ! Certainly not a PS researched purchase. Someday I'd love to see a club sporting that 5ct AVC from GOG!
Most celebs borrow jewels for big events and just have to make sure they say whose jewelry it is, same with the dresses.

I know some disgustingly rich people (if only I was one of them  ) who have serious amounts of bling. However, not one of those ladies take their real diamonds on their many yearly holidays. They have heaps of not all that cheap fakes, such as from Carat, that they travel with. This has always baffled me - their jewellery is for wearing & at the end of the day, fully insured. Unless it was a particularly sentimental piece I'd wear my real bling everywhere :lickout:

I have fakes from Carat that I take on holiday. I often go to developing countries and also places with fairly high rates of crime. My engagement ring has a 2.5 + carat centre so I really don't want to risk it. I wear upwards of £50k worth of diamonds everyday and I don't want to be mugged on holiday.

I know of a family friend who got a 3ct + ering that she flaunted about. She practically threw her hand in your face and would rattle off the specs. She was not very nice about it. Anyhow they got divorced several years later and she went to sell the ring- yup CZ! I can't really blame her DH though as she was very selfish in a lot of ways. She said the ring had to be 3cts for her to say yes. No one was very surprised when it ended- we were sort of waiting for the guy to wake up and realize what a tool she was.

Do you get fakes the same size as your e-ring? Or are they smaller?

I guess I don't understand wearing fakes on vacations because it seems like they could still draw attention. I know a lot of people do it, though.

Both thing2. I just wear small fake diamonds out and about during the day, I have a 3 carat for nights out eg in fancy restaurants. Sometimes I just wear a small coloured stone. My engagement rings are sentimental, so I'm careful with them. I try to balance the risk of wearing them against the enjoyment. I don't have hard and fast rules. I HAVE worn them to a not-so-safe country before, but I felt nervous and couldn't relax. And you need to relax on holiday!

Oh man. Sounds like DH was a tool though to give his fiance a fake ring.

Hahaha every thing about this story makes me laugh. Imagine her face when she found out!

Anywho I know I've heard some real housewife say she wears a fake most of the time. I get it for trips but in general I'd just insure it and wear the heck out of it!

I also don't wear the real thing out of the country. I have a nice little fake just in case we were mugged.

Rosetta, I hope I didn't offend you. It never crossed my mind to be mugged - I was assuming the women I know wear fake in case it gets lost. I totally take on board what you're saying though.

If I thought I was in a bad area is for sure not wear my ring. Especially if I was high profile. But what I don't get is I'd prefer not to west anything at all. Fake or real a big rock can attacked unwanted attention.

Not at all Alex T! I just wanted to explain some reasons why a fake would be a good idea some times.

Trust me, I wear my diamonds all day long in the UK!

Phew! I am I'm the UK too. And I have in the past left my engagement & eternity rings at home when holidaying, but only due to where we have gone & the constant need to be taking my rings off to keep applying suncream to the children. I had one time slipped them off to reach for cream & my engagement ring slipped right from my hand & into the sink  Thankfully there was a plug guard, but I learned it was less stress to leave them behind if going hot & tropical!

This is exactly why I've never bothered to get a fakie to wear in lieu of my rings. A potential mugger will still be interested in a fake, and just as violent in obtaining it as the real thing. If I don't feel comfortable enough to wear my actual diamonds, I stick with a plain gold band and leave the proper rings in the safe. :))

As for celebrities? I do think the majority of their gems are real - many of their salaries are almost incomprehensible, they need to splash all that cash out on SOMETHING. :cheeky:

Hahahah    that was the worst typed sentence in the history of sentences. But im glad you know what i mean. They will just see something big on your finger, and not think "is it real or not? hmm". I dont have a large ring nor do I travel much, but for me i would just leave the thing at home if I thought it was going to make me more susceptible to danger.

No one in their right mind would wear a big fake ring in a dangerous area. Big diamonds, fake or real, should be worn in safe places only. But yes, I would take a big fake ring with me on holiday to wear in the posh hotels, restaurants etc. Everywhere else, i wear a small fake. I've just worn my fake 3 ct all over Vietnam, no problems at all. I felt very safe.

I never ever leave my rings in the hotel room safe since one of my friends have had their jewellery stolen from their luxury hotel. If I must leave valuables, I would leave them with the hotel staff to put in their safe. But really, I just don't take valuable jewellery on holiday with me.

This is what I don't understand - if you feel safe wearing a large fake diamond (which to probably every passerby appears authentic), why not just wear the real one? Is it an issue of sentimentality of the originals being lost? Or inconvenience of the insurance process?

I didnt think Vietnam was dangerous enough to worry. Besides, we were fully escorted at all times, and spent a lot of time in posh hotels in Saigon. And in swimming pools. And yes, my insurance process would not be fun if I lose diamonds overseas. Wearing large fakes is NOT the same as wearing large diamonds simply because I don't want to lose the real ones, nor do I want to deal with my insurance
companies. But if I was really paranoid, I wouldn't even wear them at home. I've balanced the risks and benefits and personally reached a decision I'm comfortable with.

This thread is now way off topic, so to bring it back: yes, I think most celeb rings are real but I think some wear copies for safety at times.

I never wear fakes; I hate them on all levels and get zero pleasure out of wearing them. If I'm going somewhere that I don't want to take my real stuff, I simply leave them at home and wear nothing but my plain platinum wedding band and some inexpensive diamond bezel studs that I bought as a teenager to stop my ear piercings closing up.

Sophie Wessex of the Royal Family and Kate Middleton have been known to wear fakes. They get them from a company called Heavenly something - Heavenly Jewels? I don't know, but I sure was disappointed. Fakes are the opposite of every reason that I love jewellery and I'd rather wear something tiny and real than a larger fake. I do have some fakes at home in DeBeers and Tiffany boxes to act as decoys, and although they look very good in the boxes, when I try them on there's no way they sparkle like the real thing.

A lot of celebs aren't all that well paid, so I have sometimes wondered.

Part of the reason I got an EC was because I thought it would seem less interesting to a potential mugger than a bright sparkly RB. That's probably silly, but I admit it really does make me feel safer.

I really like this idea. My biggest worry is about a break-in and losing things that way. I always have my ER with me and other pieces are in the safe, but I still get worried about less expensive, yet still nice or sentimental things getting stolen. I end up putting my jewelry in weird places all over the house so they aren't in the obvious spots or jewelry boxes. But then it's a pain getting ready and sometimes I don't think to wear certain things because "out of sight, out of mind."

Yes, it's difficult deciding how to hide your stuff. I thought about a safe, but apparently burglars are prety adept at taking safes with them or smashing them. My stuff is well-camouflaged in a particular place. The decoys are great. They look so amazing in their high-end boxes (the boxes are real, from other real stuff I bought). I also bought an antique-looking replica ring, and put it in my grandmother's real antique ring box.
