Hubby blew out knee almost two months ago. Bone on bone arthritis. Not sports related just arthritis. He is 70. Orthopedic surgeon said eventually a total knee replacement but try a course of cortisone shots. Referred us to the ‘ injection specialist doctor ‘ in the practice. Hubby had one aspiration and the cortisone shot with little to no effect. Went back a month later and doc said let’s do the gel shot but insurance said ‘no’ but subsequently approved it two weeks later. (Makes no sense I know.) The shot is given once every week for three weeks and should last a month. Has anyone had the gel shot? Comments? Advice? Any response is greatly appreciated. Wish my inquiry it was bling related! Thank you!

No experience of the gel but is a partial replacement an option? I had one about 8 years ago and am 45 now with a mostly normal knee and certainly no pain.

I had the gel and it’s a year later and still going strong. My MIL didn’t have the same result, but her knee was, by that time, beyond help except for a replacement.

My Mom had gel shots a number of years ago. They were very helpful for her at the time. Best of luck.

If it helps, my dog does adequan shots, which in US, is not approved for humans (maybe it should be) Lucky does great on those as she has arthritis. We started with every 4 days then pushed it out to every other week.

Not an entire 1:1 but, I think it it should be tried. It may do some good because surgery can be a beast. I'm pretty sure its going to be a long ass needle though.

I did gel for 7 years before replacement. At 70 I would do the new knee and get on with enjoying life! I have had both done and I can do anything I want!

I think the plan is to try the shots and if they do not help then surgery. The ortho did not explain very much and hubby did not ask a lot of questions and I was not at the appointment. So if the shots don’t work we will get more info. Never heard of a partial replacement so we will definitely ask. Glad you got great results and are pain free!

My mom had the same shots a few years ago and they helped! Eventually she did have her “bad” knee replaced and had no complications.
