Hi everyone!

As many of you know, my FI and I have had so many issues re: making decisons about our wedding. At first I wanted to elope, he didn't. Then I wanted destination, again, he didn't. He kept on using the "come on, this is our one wedding day" excuse. He wanted the traditional wedding, and in the end, he won. We found a place that we are both absolutely in love with last weekend! It is an old mansion in Westchester, NY- actually, it is a true historical site, it was Mark Twain's summer home- how cool is that? From the moment we pulled up, I knew this was the place. All of the other places we checked out were nice, but I just never got that "feeling" if you know what I mean....it is true, when you do find "the place" you just know!

Anyway, now we are in the process of picking a date...at first we wanted the summer, but then we got to thinking- it just might be too hot....so now we are strongly considering September of next year. Sept is such a beautiful month weather wise usually- hopefully if will not be too warm, or too cool. But I am torn on the actual date. At first I wanted a very light color scheme, but I also love the darker colors of the fall, like the colors JCrow is using (champagne/wine/taupe,etc).

Here are the dates they have available- Sept 14th (day after my b-day), Sept 21 (which is my dad's b-day), and Sept 28th. Anyone have any feedback? I would appreciate it! Thanks so much!

Hurray!!!! i''m so excited that you''ve found a place that *feels* right! like you said, you just know it when you see it!

now you need to post some pictures

i can''t wait to see!

About the date, I think that I would tend to lean towards earlier september, just because i think that i love the waning summer into fall transition and I prefer a lighter color scheme to a darker. what do you think best suits the place? will it be an inside our outside wedding, etc...

good luck and Hurray again!!!

I know I probably drove you nuts, lovelylulu, with all of my indecisiveness. This place just feels so right though. We will have our ceremony on-site on their gorgeous stone patio in the back of the mansion. The grounds are absolutely beautiful- its hard to say which season suits the place, because I am sure it is exquisite in the summer and the fall. Its the Tappan Hill Mansion in Tarrytown, NY. Abigail Kirsch is the caterer -she is very well known in the NYC area- and her food is gourmet. We went to an Abigail Kirsch wedding a few yrs back and it was just insane- the food and the service was just to die for!

Here are some pics- sorry I dont have better ones, because our camera is broken, so didnt get a chance to take any "real" ones, here are some from the website....

Here is the rotunda (when you first walk in). When I saw it it took my breath away....Brian says it looks similar to the scene in the movie "Titanic" when they come down the stairs! LOL But, he is kind of right, huh?

And here is the ceremony area in the back of the mansion. There is a huge stone (slate) patio out there. The landscaping is just gorgeous. And since the mansion is on a hilltop, you have some great views of the Hudson River....

Re: the date ... I think anytime is September is gorgeous (which is why we chose it too!). We''re mid-month (the 17th), so I know just what you''re saying about it being kind of in between summer and fall. The weather itself tends to still be summery-ish, but it''s got that "back to school" feel to it that screams "summer''s over!"

As for us, we don''t really have much going on for flowers other than my bouquet and a light arbor decoration, so I wasn''t too worried about being too summery with mostly white flowers (plus I think that works well with our place). But if you''re going to be decorating with a lot of flowers, I think I''d probably lean more toward the autumn colors you like -- I think it''d work SO beautifully with your setting, and since there''s a chance that the weather may be on the cooler side (you never know), I think you''d be better off with the deeper colors.

I don''t think the Wedding Police will cite you for using fall colors in early September but maybe I''m wrong

oh, dani! it''s just gorgeous! congratulations! that''s such a huge thing to scratch off the list!

i think the date is a personal thing. for me i''d pick sept. 28. 28 is my "number"- i know silly. also i would want as close to october as possible. i like that time of year. it''s when the air is changing. it''s in that breeze! we actually wanted an oct. wedding but the dates were booked. i am in hurricane territory so i can''t have a sept - early oct. wedding. too risky. but, you don''t have to worry about that! that''s great!

what i would do (and what i did) to determine the date is to see what your other vendors have available. for instance i was set on a church, cake lady, reception venue and photographer. i added on a florist too at that time, even though i wasn''t set on her. so i got all of the available dates for mid/late oct. & nov. all that determined my date, it was the one they all had free.

You guys are great- thank you so much!

Ellaila- I laughed when I read your initial post. I can see what your saying about the date though. No, I dont think the "wedding" police will cite me either....LOL

JCrow- That is a great idea about contacting vendors. But the prob is is that I am not sure about which vendors I want. I mean, I have ideas, like a list of 3-4 photographers, an officiant idea, and the florist- I have to use one of the place's florists- that is the only vendor they require- YUCK! I hate that. Required vendors usually = MORE $$$!!!!

Beautiful!

and dani you didn''t bother me one bit. i was so thankful to all the people that i bombarded with questions about various venues. they were patient and honest -- it really helped us make our decision.

My bday is in September also, and I love the month of September because it''s the beginning of the fall season. I don''t think you can go wrong with any of the dates you have to choose from. The venue you both picked out is beautiful! You should check with your most important vendors to see when they are available and that should hlep you decide the date. Either way, you can''t win. Congratulations!

Looks AMAZING!!!!

On the dates - I would, hands down, pick the 28th. Wouldn't want anniversarys to step on my birthday
31.gif
... and, this is horrible to say & think about ... but I also wouldn't want the anniversary on my dad's birthday, for fear that one day this will be a sad occaision. Forewarned = forearmed.

That said, I'm Oct. 7th & it's one day away from my parent's anniversary & one day from my sister's b-day ... so ...

All dates in Sept are pretty popular in these parts (Hudson Valley/Westchester) so vendors already being booked any of those dates is about equal risk.

I also just love fall up here -- SEPT 28!!!!!

About the dates themselves -- here''s my two cents! Obviously, though, it''s your own personal decision -- just sharing my thoughts!

I wouldn''t think you''d want it the day after your birthday -- your poor hubby will be going crazy trying to find both a birthday gift AND an anniversary gift at the same time in future years! Personally, I think my Dad would be thrilled/honored to be at his daughter''s wedding on his birthday. I''m not sure if your dad will be walking you down the aisle or not, but if so, then wow ... I have to imagine that''d be the best birthday for him! Provided he likes your fiance, then what better gift to give a dad!

(Oh now I''m getting all choked up!!)

And September 28 has a good vibe to it too! (I''m all about the vibes you get from a date. I had bad vibes about one of our potential dates - not sure why - and lo and behold, after we starting planning for that date, things fell apart!)

Radiantgirl- Thanks so much! Another Virgo, huh? By the way, is your ring done yet? I hope I didnt miss the pics!

Deco- Thank you for your insight...you are right, I thought about Sept 21 one day being a sad day for me- I hate to think that way, but its true- I have to think of everything, and that definitely crossed my mind....

Ellaila- I do think my dad would be so happy if I got married on his b-day, that is really special. And, yes, he does like my FI. lol But I am afraid that when he is gone, it might become a day that will be somewhat bittersweet. I love my dad so much and could not imagine life without him in it.

well, i would try to start contacting the different vendors on your list to see what they have available, then start setting up meetings...

I got married on 10-1-05, which is close to your 9/28 option. I got married in Cold Spring, Ny which is close to westchester. The weather there on 10/1 was absolutely perfect, I could not have picked a better day!

Thanks, everyone, for all of the great input/advice....And Lisa, cant believe your anniversary is on my b-day! Sept is really just a beautiful month, especially for a wedding, imo...

So I made a few phone calls to a couple of photographers and set up some appts over the next few weeks- we are going to be busy! Its hard to believe this is really happenning!!!
6.gif

As far as the dates- I think we are leaning towards the 14th. Only because in my heart I love more of a light color palette than a dark, and I think if I get towards the end of Sept, that is more fallish im my mind- at least if I stick with mid-Sept, its not exactly fall yet, not exactly summer, and I could swing either way with the colors and the feel......ok, am I thinking way too hard about this "color scheme" thing? lol Hopefully the weather will be still be warm, but not too hot. And after I thought about the 21st, I realized that sharing my anniversary with my dad''s b-day might one day be bittersweet for me, and I dont want that. So, thats how it came down to the 14th! Any how, we should be making a decision by the weekend!

Dani,

Totally off topic, but my friend from New York is getting married there in September. She is doing vivid autumn colors (burgandy, orange etc.). It looks beautiful! I''m happy you were able to find something that made you both happy.

CONGRATS on finding the venue- it looks fab!

September is a lovely month to get married. It''s a gorgeous time of the year in just about every part of the country.

I''m a bit biased, as my wedding will be on 9/30 of this year! My colors will be wine/deep red & champagne/ivory. Plus, we''re planning to kick off the dancing at the reception with one of my favorite songs- "september" by Earth, Wind & Fire. Corny, but sooo "us"!

Congratulations again! Weddings are so exciting!

Ally- what day is your friend getting married at Tappan Hill? It really is such a beautiful place. I just think earlier Sept might be better for me because I prefer a lighter color scheme...

Chargergrl- Sept 3oth! That will be beautiful! And I love the dancing to "September" idea! That's really cute!

Radiantgirl- Ohhh- how exciting!! I will totally keep my fingers crossed for you!
