Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

Hi Yenny, You have gotten some really good advice from the other posters. I just wanted to chime in and say 'hang in there'. I have three sons and grades 5 - 7 were particularly difficult. It kind of depends on the child's personality on how they each dealt with being 'on the fringe' not quite popu...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

I read your post and feel for you. I try telling my kids that in 10 years these kids will mean nothing to them so try not to let it get to them to much. I know that's hard for a kid. But it seems to work, my youngest is just like whatever when it comes to those certain type of people that you are d...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

I have to agree it's the parents' job to teach and model respectful, kind, inclusive behavior. And unfortunately I think intervening on your child's behalf will do little to change the other kid's behavior. My daughter has had an easy time with friendships so far, but I have noticed some of the gir...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

I am sorry your son is dealing with this. It is too common, unfortunately. I have a nine-year old son. It can be a tricky age. My son is very independent and it doesn't bother him in the slightest if a kid chooses not to play with him. Thankfully, he has a core group of buddies who stick together. ...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

Hi Yenny: I feel you. My son went through that in 5th grade too. However, these were friends that suddenly decided to turn on him, as a group. I tried a group outing. Didn't help. I spoke to two of the moms cause I knew them pretty well personally. One was receptive, though it didn't help much with...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

Physical bullying is NOT okay. The rest of what you've described, I'd leave alone. Talk to your son about how some people behave this way and encourage him to be the polite kid who tries to welcome others. Don't approach them (or their parents since that is who taught them...) and think it will do ...

Thanks azstonie! Your perspective/advice are valuable!

SB and Mayk, thanks for the cyber hugs, I need them. This is so hard...wanting to help but not knowing the best way to do so....it stinks! We have a couple of years left with these kids, so doing nothing may not be an option. :(

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

Not wanting to be friends with someone is normal kid behaviour (I was a teacher in a past life as well), but poking other children in the eye is stupid and dangerous...... I also agree that the popular clicks of women frequently teach their kids to be obnoxious exclusionary little brats by their ow...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

Retired teacher here. These boys do what they do because their parents are nasty bullies too--->it's acceptable in their family. They won't get in trouble at home and their parents will coach them in how to not get caught by the adults. Does the school have a zero tolerance/bullying and fighting po...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

One thing that I've learned with my kids is that you can't force friendships and that's sort of what I was hearing when I read your post. I can relate (I actually have a 9 year-old boy and I have another child who is very socially awkward and is often excluded, picked on, etc.). The only times that...

Re: WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

Does your son have friend(s) that he is close to? Does he talk about any of the kids more than others? I would encourage those friendships that he already has, and not try to help him make more friends, because I've begun to see that friendships are like romantic relationships, and they can't be fo...

Re: So upset. Neighbor came on to me.

Ugh, how creepy! I'm so sorry that he's put you in this position! Good for you for standing up to him! I think you said what needed to be said and if he persists, I'd tell him that if he doesn't leave you alone, you will call the authorities. No one should feel intimidated in their own neighborhood!

WWYD? Advice needed re: 9 year old son

My 9 year old son is having some social problems and I am having a hard time gauging how serious they are or what I should do to help him. He's the kind of kid who's typically oblivious to what's going on around him and some of the more subtle social nuances can escape him. There have been several i...

Re: How often do you fly, or have you flown, first class?

I've been upgraded a few times, both as a teenager flying overseas and as an adult when I was consulting for a big company and flew out every Sunday and home every Friday. Nowadays, we fly coach. DH still travels a bit but we can barely get 4 coach tickets with his miles these days!

My oval in SS setting and my 1.7 ct oec studs with my IDJ jackets. Also, the rainbow of cabs I have that fit in the IDJ jackets... I would never trade/upgrade any of those pieces. The rest (albeit not much) is fair game....my three stone in the SS setting...love the design, wish the center stone/si...

Re: feeling down.

Aww, so sorry Niel! I was on bedrest for 12 weeks with DS and while it definitely wasn't fun, I just kept reminding myself why I was doing it. As to the timing, it DOES totally suck. But I agree that it can't hurt to ask for a phone interview. The worst thing that can happen is that they will say &q...

Re: What to use to mark kid's stuff for pre-K?

I've used Mabel's Labels for years. The clothing labels stay on for a couple of years through the washer/dryer (or til my kids outgrow things) and the dishwasher safe labels stay on through hundreds of washes in the dishwasher. http://www.mabelslabels.com/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_...
