Re: Let Down by Rubies

well firstly, a ruby is a sapphire, albeit a red one. Also a carat can be tiny or huge, depending on the type of stone. For peridot, a one carat stone is a commonplace, while for finely colored, untreated VVS ruby one carat is quite rare and valuable. If it is your expactations, rather than rubies t...

Side Stones Aside

I have been thinking of what to do with my Madagascan ruby pair. They are 2.8mm. I was thinking to use them as sides to a nice tsav, but the one I have is a square emerald (5mm) and I thought that might be awkward. Of course with good design anything is possible. I put them next to each other and st...

Re: Green garnet, Red & Pink spinels, Pink tourmaline and mo

All that came to you in one package? That must have been a good day!

Really they are all so lovely I don't know where to start, so I will start at the end and say that green pear, neither mint nor tsavorite, should be termed Forest Mint®!

Re: TGT Drops

That is very sweet of all of you to say. Chono, I wouldn't want you or anyone to feel guilty for "having won" these or any other stone. My sister's happiness and recovery will be the same with or without. And losing these stones may only open me to the next pair; one never knows. Whoever g...

Re: Topaz?

I think it is an attractive topaz and don't really mind the window, but the price is objectionable. I like topaz in the orange pink purple spectrum. It is my birthstone also. AJS and Spectralgems have some nice topaz. Check gemfix as well.

Re: TGT Drops

Indeed, I am trying to dominate the world ruby market one pair of side stones at a time. The pair that I have is just over 2mm diameter; take that Burma! Actually when I saw them, I thought that if I got them I would be one stone away from a five stone ring for my sister, who just finalized her divo...

Re: Vanadium Chrysoberyl

Multicolour has some v-chrysos but they are not searchable as such; you just have to look through all their chrysoberyls. This one that I was working on yesterday is from them, and is 1.55 carat. I have a smaller one from AJS. These are also iphone pics, one is over exposed and the other a little bl...

Re: Vanadium Chrysoberyl

Gorgeous, but we need more pictures! Great color on your stone; was the pic taken in sunlight? I have one that goes a little pale indoors, but just pops in sunlight. Very odd coincidence, just yesterday I was working setting it into a ring. I botched it (again) so today will melt a little blob back ...

Re: Amazing RED Ruby & A Quandary

WoW No re-cut will be able to change the 50% depth unless you would be content with two .75 carat stones. A special custom setting is the way I would go. Either having the back foiled, or a setting with the interior of the basket "faceted" and polished to mimic a deeper stone. Or possibly ...

Re: Holes in Rings

I could be totally wrong on this, but it seems to me from my limited experience, that in ancient and antique jewelry a closed back is the norm. While on the one hand I can imagine that sometime after the industrial revolution, jewlers' tools were improved to make more delicate or task oriented detai...

Re: Holes in Rings

I do believe holes, or rather openings, in and around the basket will aid in light performance, but I doubt that on a regular day much light is being emitted by my finger. I would add that a nicely finished closed interior could aid in performance by reflecting stray light back into the stone, inste...

Re: Holes in Rings

well considered. But then too, I must ask about this dirt. Most stones in the upper register of RI, when well cut, return light from the viewer rather then allowing the viewer to look through them at the dirt that has collected behind them. This is, of course, the principle of total internal reflect...

Re: Holes in Rings

Thanks Chrono. These are some of the theories I thought would come up. I am wondering then, does it get dirty under the stone because there IS a hole and thus having the hole makes it easier to clean? If there were no hole, the pavilion enclosed and fully bezeled from above, no access for dirt to en...

Holes in Rings

I need to avail myself of the collective wisdom of PS. Does there need to be a hole in the ring shank under a stone? Obviously I am not asking about the hole for one's finger. The little hole underneath the stone that goes to one's skin. I am looking for reasons both for, and against, theories of fu...

Re: Tsavorite hunting... (pictures)

I think you should hold out for a better stone. I personally like the elegant lines in an emerald cut, though I admit a radiant would be more lively. This stone, however, looks generally drab to me, at least in the photos. It comes off more as a common closed green tourmaline. I have no problem with...

Re: Mother of pearl comb - carving advice?

blocking out is best done with a wet diamond saw. If you haven't one there are diamond disk saws that fit on the end of a dremel or similar tool. Since you have to do this wet, only try this with a flex shaft tool so you can keep all the electric parts away from the water. If you have no way to saw ...
