Re: Amazing red topaz!!!

I think you are the first! I was looking there two days ago and didn't see that. And it is my "birthstone" so I always look for that.

Re: What's So Hard About a WHITE Shirt?

When looking at Brooks brothers, look for Oxfordcloth, not Broadcloth, huge difference. Broadcloth is thin and flimsy, Oxford is denser, and takes a nice starching.
Yeah I buy a lot there, it's not my ethos, but it's in my genes.

Re: What's So Hard About a WHITE Shirt?

Just want to add, I have shirts and sweaters from Agnes B. that I've had for 20 years. They still look good as new, and I wear them often.
To me quality has always been the criterion for classic.

Re: "Melted Fingerprints"

I would always defer to Richard Hughes. Certainly if the fracture containing the fingerprint reaches a surface it could be flux healed / glass filled. If the inclusion is not surface breaking there is no way for the glass or flux to get in.

Re: "Melted Fingerprints"

fingerprint type inclusions are a common type of inclusion that look like a portion of a fingerprint floating in the stone. Heating the stone can melt the inclusion, some of which can get absorbed into the crystal matrix, but still leaving a lesser trait. I would think the melted fingerprint inclusi...

Re: Your opinion and advice on a pair of Sapphires

The lapidaries I mentioned are all in the Vendors for refernce thread pinned above near the start of this forum. I think you should start with reading the new to colored gemstones thread also pinned near the top. Yes the gemfix pair I posted are heated, and come with an independent lab report saying...

Re: Your opinion and advice on a pair of Sapphires

the price is high for heated stones without a lab report from an independent lab. Did you look at gemfix ? they are in the permanent thread of Vendors for Reference at the start of this forum. If the NSC price is indicative of your budget? You might contact a few of the special lapidaries and inquir...

Re: Random pictures/stories of our furbabies

Well today I went to the union square greenmarket (yes there were greens from 2 guys from woodbridge at least) and I ran into an old neighbor who had two pugs back when she lived around the corner from me. And there she was with 2 pugs. I was coming up from behind them and said out loud, 'is that Z_...

Re: My new unset Emerald 2.34 cts 8mm ascher cut

I like your stone regardless of it being only commercial. And as you say, it is yours. I also love working in 999fine silver; since it is not worth a thousand dollars it is fun and stress free. I agree rose gold would help the stone stand out. A bit of green gold fashioned as a reflector in the gall...

Re: Blue Star Sapphire

I think you should return it because it is not the tone that you describe as what you want. I think the stone you already have is dark and very purple. The Finewater stone has a lighter tone. The photos on the website show it that way also. In your starless photo I see mostly the reflection of your ...

Re: Disappointed: Damaged stone from precision cutter

Is your loupe 10X? colored gemstones are really fairly judged 12 inches from the eye, or at MOST with a 3X loupe. of course one may want to look inside more deeply, I do it often, but don't count strikes against a stone if I am looking over 3X. Do the cutters concur about the defects?

I have many (over 100) precision cut stones (should I be embarrassed to say that?). Never have I received one with scratches or chips. I am sorry to hear of your experiences. Can you show us pictures of the defects?

update osteonj &...

Well the surgery last july turns out not to have been completely successful. Or at least that there was a tiny spot that had the surgeon not been quite so conservative about, would have been removed, but instead has allowed the onj to spread a little forward in the jaw. In two weeks she will have an...

Re: >$20 Alexandrite too good to be true?

Marlow, I don't understand how it seems to be a natural chrysoberyl to you. All I see is a lousy ebay listing, and a stone that, it it is "true", is not "too good". From a photo online I cannot say if it is a chrysoberyl, a piece of swarovsky crystal or a particle of a comet. I c...

Re: Help with Emerald Reset

I really like it as it is.
I agree with TL that the stresses of re-bezeling it would be frightening.
More frightening would be the process of de-bezeling it. It would be difficult to remove the stone from the current setting without damaging it.
