Are we talking minor or major differences??

Any appraiser may vary by +/- a grade on color and/or clarity. Both categories are subjective.

Minor differences in measurements can also be expected. Keep in mind if you are looking %''s you''ve got to calculate actual mm''s of difference. A 1% difference on a 1 carat diamond is hundreths of a mm.

Maybe if you detail the differences, folks can better advise you.

Ooops, sorry about that. We bought our diamond from blue nile and the diamond was appraised as an H, whereas the GIA certif called it a G. Everything else (clarity, ct weight, cut, polish, symmetry) matched between the two. The diamond is beautiful and we love it but can''t help feeling somewhat ripped off. The appraisal value is still more than what we paid, but we understand that that is an inflated value that says nothing about what the diamond''s true cost is. What should we do? Should we do anything or should we just leave well enough alone?

Was the appraisal done on the stone loose or was it in a mounting? If mounted it''s considerably more difficult to get a true color.

Dave

It is a loose stone.

Talk to the appraiser about the matter. If they saw the grading report, ask them if the stone that they examined is the same stone as the one described in the lab report. If you didn''t show them the report, show it to them. A one grade variation isn''t that unusual between two different graders but they (or GIA) may have simply made a mistake. They may be willing to reconisider or to explain why they saw a difference.

Work with the appraiser - you will never get GIA to change it.

It really could be a very small difference if it''s low G or a high H color.

I guess I wasn''t clear. I agree with Gary, talk to the appraiser.
