Recycling a ring

Hello

I am having my diamond put into a new setting. Now I don''t know what to do with the old one! I''d like to take my side stones and someday make earrings, and my melee stones and maybe make a new ring.

Can the platinum from the setting be melted down and made into a new band for the stones? or do they have to use "fresh" metal when making a custom ring?

its 90/10 platinum, not sure what the alloy is.

I''ve been told that the platinum in a ring I''m recycling can''t be reused. It''s 950 plat. Someone suggested it may be because of the unknown alloy.
