I worked for Estee Lauder and got to try the entire product line free...which was nice, now I have to pay (ick)! Anyhow..I LOVE all their products, except for their fragrances. I love Juicy tubes from Lancome, some glosses from MAC, and BodyShop has some great products too!

This thread is awesome because I am just in one of those phases where I feel like I should be walking around with a bag over my head *

I loves me my Smashbox lipcolors. And their primer. Their eyeshadow? Not so much.

* For anyone interested, I use the Costo Brand brown paper lunch bags. Easy to draw on, little chance of suffocation.

Absolutely agreed! And it stays on really well too.

My only other cosmetics tips are GENTLE cleansers etc (I use Cetaphil) and SUNSCREEN. Ever since I found out UVA rays come in through windows (''A for ageing''
23.gif
) I have religiously used sunscreen.
I am a sunscreen fanatic and wear factor 30 everyday. I am so pale I would never tan anyway so I may as well just look after my skin. In London you really need to wear a lot of skincare/make-up products to protect yourself from the grimy air.

At 35, I don''t have any wrinkles at all and most people think I''m about 26 - so it''s either the sunscreen or my amazingly immature behaviour!

Cleopatra - I''ve been having similar makeup issues, and haven''t found anything that lasts either....Is the estee lauder thick enough that it will cover flaws? (old pimple scars, redness) - not that I have any mind you

Might have to get me a bottle...

Joflier, Estee Lauder has a transfer resistant/sweatproof/water-resistant, lightweight formula with excellent coverage. It also has a SPF 10 as well. It''s called DOUBLE WEAR. It''s great, but not if you have really dry skin. I agree with wearing an SPF daily, on your face, even in winter months. I had skin cancer when I was 22, and the cancer specialist told me minimum 15, I usually wear a 20, and it''s great to see so many cosmetic companies now including SPF in their moisturizers, and foundations.

HI:

YSL: Touche Eclat highlighter and the Volume Effect mascara are fab. My favorite mascara by far.
Lancome: just finished their Renergie Lift makeup, and am onto EL Resilience Lift Extreme.
MAC: pressed powder, pigment eyeshadows, concealer stick, lip glosses, are all great products. And their brushes.
Dior: in general, I love their lipsticks. I just bought Chanel Rouge Allure in Absolute Topaz and like it also.
Avon: moisture effective eye make up remover. Gentle, non oily, overall excellent product.

cheers--Sharon
Resilience Lift Extreme?? Thought you were 22?? With all this preventive maintenance you got goin'' on here, your face will be as smooth as the proverbial baby''s butookus when you''re my age!

What a fun thread! Thanks for starting it!

Mascara - Yves St Laurent, Faux Cils (It lengthens lashes like crazy - good considering that means "fake lashes" in French)
25.gif

Mascara - Dior, Dior Show Black Out ... This mascara is amazing! The first time I used it people couldn''t believe my lashes were real ... They were full and SO long! Really beautiful ... love the stuff!

Foundation - Prescriptives, Flawless Skin is oil-free and gives great light yet effective coverage.

Concealer - MAC - I use a Mac concealer ... don''t know the name that works better than anything else I have tried, hands down.

Let me know if you try anyting and LOVE it!

I currently use Bare Escentuals and I really do love this make-up....my only problem is - one full day of work and it''s completely gone (i''m not a reapply throughout the day kind of girl)....I need make-up that will stay, not be too oily, etc.
Cleopatra,

If you like minearal makeups, maybe try a different brand to see if it lasts better. I used to use Jane Iredale mineral makeup and I quite liked it except for the fact that I have an oiler skin type and it tended to make me look a little shinier than I would like. Other than that, the application and coverage were great and it lasted all day.

Good luck and have fun shopping!

I love makeup and love researching best this and that! This site essentialdayspa is sort of like the pricescope of skin care and makeup and I have learnt so much from it. Trust me it can be nearly as addictive as this place
2.gif

I love Chanel Lipsticks particularly hydrobase.
Foundation chanel compact applied with a brush
Concealer YSL Radian Touch and CD anti fatigue or the new Helena Rubenstein Magic Concealer
Blusher Bobbi Brown cream
Eyeshadows Chanel
Eyeliner Bobbi Brown Gel liners or Mac Powerpoint
Mascara Christian Dior
Skin care well that's a whole other story

I love love love Chanel eye shadow quads. I also really love some of the Laura Mercier more sheer lipsticks. Truly I do not thing there is a line of makeup that I have not tried and I have a favorite from every one of them. I love Bobbi Brown for overall wearability and think Nars has the coolest colors, not all wearable on me, but neat to look at. Very runway and funky, not for trips to the market.

Sephora is like a drug den for me, I cannot go in without spending a ton, even if I tell myself I am not going to buy a lot!

I hate Lancome mascara, think it runny and clumpy. I like a few different ones, but truly dislike theirs. Bobbi Brown''s everything and no smudge mascaras are nice.

I have to go all the way to King of Prussia for Sephora and I find it impossible to leave without spending at least $100. I love Benefit''s BADgal mascara. I also adore NARS lipsticks and glosses. My current favorite is the Sexual Healing lipstick. If I take my 10 year old in, forget it. She is a bigger Sephora W***E than I am.

Oooo another favorite product of mine:

Background Story:
I have very small eyes and they are sunken in (so picture eyes and no eye lids) - I''ve always had problems finding shadows and liners that stay (don''t create that upside down U on the top of my lid). Well, I''ve always been cautious with liquid liners, mainly because they are so harsh and IMPOSSIBLE to put on correctly...well, I was finally convinced to try Vincent Longo''s liquid liner and I adore it! The brush is sooooo easy to control and it stays on ALL day! I never thought I would like a liquid liner, but I find myself reaching for it day after day.

I totally agree with whoever said that DiorShow Black Out Mascara is completely awesome - - cause it is! I found that Sephora''s own line of cosmetics makes seriously great mascaras and HALF the price of these upscale beauty lines...I''ve been super happy with my Sephora mascara that I''ve almost discarded my DiorShow completely....I get the same results, for HALF the price!

I also LOVE Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Lip Duos! They are completely awesome and REALLY stay on!!! However, they really need to come out with new colors....I''m so bored with the 12 (estimate) shades that they''ve had since the product was introduced over a year ago! Come on! Give me some more colors!!!!

I really love this thread. A Sephora store is opening up at the beginning of 2008 - it. will. be. less. than. 3. miles. from. my. house........HOLY MOLY! There goes my paycheck!!!

With mascara, I''ve found the cheaper it is, the better it works, so I use Maybelline. I also like the Lancome Defincils one.

Other products of which I''m a fan:

MAC face powder
Bobbi Brown under eye concealer that stuff is MAGIC. An insomniac''s best friend. and Bobbi Brown blush in ''Desert Rose'' is the most natural for pale gals like me that I''ve found.
Origins concealer actually stays put, for me and is thick enough to cover my spots.
I also love Origins lipsticks (so yummy, I want to eat them! munchmunchmunch) and Clinique and Dior also make lipsticks in great colours.

I just discovered lipgloss! I love it... It''s the only thing I can put on my lips that I don''t actually eat off (I don''t know why I do that...), and it''s super easy to apply.

I love Marcelle''s hypoallegenic make-up line. I have sensitive, acne-prone skin and sensitive eyes, and I find it mild, non-irritating, and it doesn''t make me break out.

I use Yves Saint Laurent''s Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils, it''s absolutely amazing. I always receive compliments when I wear it. It lenghtens, thickens, bends, it really delivers. I''ve tried so many brands; Dior, Chanel, Lancome, Kanebo, Shiseido, L''oreal, but this really did it for me.

For foundation I use YSL''s relatively new Perfect Touch Radiant Brush Foundation. It kind of feels like a face lotion when I''m applying it, and it''s def NOT cakey, it evens out, covers possible redness, and it stays on the entire day. It does take about 30mins-1hr for it to "sink in". I live in a cold climate, so this is ideal fo rme, since it doesnät dry out the skin.
It also has a built in brush, so that''s what you apply with.

I use YSL''s highlighter, Radiant Touch. IT does amazing things! Magic! I''m serious, it''s the best product I''ve ever tried. It''s always in my purse. I use it under my eyes, below my eyebrows, it covers blemishes and other unpleasant things..
5.gif

I also use MAC''s prep and prime which has SPF 50, I think it''s the only primer with SPF 50....it''s a bit oily, utI''m not complaining, I love that it protects my skin from the sun.
20.gif

MY HOLY GRAIL IS Chanel''s Khol Crayon Eye liner....It does wonders...I''ve gotten all my friends to buy it...haha

jas,
Thanks for your bag suggestion! Seriously, I am in one of those phases now and it''s rather disheartening. I can tend to get a little overdramatic (inside my head) about these things. So thanks for making me giggle.

Thanks for all the tips ladies! I''m not a big make up person and I''ve been needing something new lately. Here''s what I use currently:

Aveda powder (kind of a slightly higher coverage powder with little sparkles in it)
Aveda concealer
Maybelline black waterproof mascara (pink tube with black top)

I''m not crazy about the Aveda stuff and I think it might be making my skin break out, so I''m going to switch to something else. Maybe the Bare Minerals or Bare Escentuals or whatever it is?

And I''m DEFINITELY going to get some Bobbi Brown undereye concealer. I always have dark circles under my eyes so I have to use concealer every day.

I''ve thought about using a tinted moisturizer, also. Any recommendations for a good tinted moisturizer?

Pan, which brand sunscreen do you use please?
I use Nivea Factor 30 - It comes in a spray bottle and is really light to apply. It''s also good as a base for makeup - though I do put the Oil of Olay stuff on in between.

I''ve tried loads of other ones - and products with built in SPF'' - but this is my favourite. Loads of the others were really sticky and heavy, or clog your pores, or were impossible to put make up on over the top.

It''s not expensive and smells nice too!

Sephora is one of my favorite stores EVER!
bat%20eyes3.gif

I love that I get a lot of samples and can try out a LOT of products... it helps me rule out what doesn't work for me and find things I love.

I have super-sensitive skin and I'm pale so I need SPF... so I look for things that address those issues without causing other issues plus they stay ON.

Cleanser: Cosmedicine Healthy Cleanse Foaming Cleanser and Toner in One - it is very gentle, removes the makeup, doesn't sting my eyes at all, and leaves my skin feeling good.

Moisturizer: Bliss The Youth as We Know it- super hydrating without feeling greasy.

Oil Control/SPF: Cosmedicine Medi-Matte- it has SPF as well, so it's great for summer days when I know I will be outside a lot. It goes on feeling thick, but I guess it absorbs because it doesn't stay feeling that way. They also make the spray lotion version, which I haven't tried but I assume it's lighter (though it does not have the SPF). They have a SPF Moisturizer that I like: Primary Care Multi-tasking Moisturizer SPF 20. Dr. Brandt Pores No More also helps with oil control and it is a much lighter cream. It works well as a primer.

As for other primers, I like Bare Escentuals or Smashbox.

Powder/Foundation: Bare Escentuals I use the foundation and mineral veil... I absolutely love it. It stays on all day, it doesn't irritate my skin, it looks flawless, matches my skin tone (not an easy feat) doesn't feel cake-y... I love it! I have tried just about everything and nothing has worked as well on me.

Mascara: A lot of them tend to burn my eyes but Dior Diorshow Mascara is awesome. Others I like are Stila Multi-effect- it has a killer brush! and for a great conditioning one, Bourjois Coup de Theatre False Lash Illusion - Duo Mascara

Eyeshadow Primer: The Best that will NOT allow ANY powder shadow to budge all day and needs a shadow remover to come off is Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. This stuff is amazing! In the heat, humidity, water, whatever.

(My computer keeps wanting to restart after its updates, so after my lunch I'll continue

I don''t wear a ton of makeup, but here''s what I like!

Cleanser: Philosophy Purity Made Simple -- love it!

Moisturizer: Kiehl''s Ultra Facial w/SPF 15

Eye Cream: Bliss All-Around Eye Cream

Foundation: MAC Select SFP 15

Mascara: MAC Pro Longlash in black. This stuff is the bomb! I run the closed tube under hot/warm water for a few seconds before I apply it, and no clumps! For cheaper stuff, I really like Boots Mascara (yay, Target!). I''m another of those who doesn''t get the whole Maybelline Great Lash thing -- never liked it. Ever.

Lipgloss: MAC Viva Glam V Lipglass -- it''s a little gooey, but the color is really pretty. Also, another Target cheapie: Rimmel lipgloss in Snog, I think it''s called -- a soft, shimmery pink.

I''ve tried Bare Escentuals a few times now and I go back and forth between loving it and hating it. Overall, I''m not a huge fan. I think it makes my skin look dry, doesn''t give me enough coverage, and it''s too messy (that stupid powder gets all over everything!).

...continued...

Eyeshadow: Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner is truly creaseless and lasts all day. It is totally layerable... so you can have it as a sheer shadow or a dramatic liner. I have it in R.S.V.P., Birthday Suit and Skinny Jeans. If I am using the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, then I can use whatever shadow for long-lasting creaseless shadow. I tend to use Urban Decay, MAC, Stila, BE and Sephora brand.

Eyeliner: The best I ever found that I can't find anymore is a liquid charcoal eyeliner byAnna Sui The liner brush made it go on perfectly and it lasted all day without cracking. Many of the liquid eyeliners burn my eyes. This stuff was gentle yet lasting... I want more! As mentioned, Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner. Another lasting cream liner is MAC Fluidline. It goes on super creamy and lasts. The MAC Liquidlast is also nice but tends to go on thicker, so I wipe off excess on the brush before applying. It lasts well but I don't think as well as the Fluidline? In a pencil I love Urban Decay 24/7. It goes on super creamy in intense color (or the blackest creamy black) and lasts well (they're waterproof).

Blush: BE in various colors. It goes on looking natural and it lasts. I do want to try NARS.

Lipstick: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil . This stuff is gorgeous! It goes on velvetty smooth and perfect. I have it in Dragon Girl and Forbidden Red. It helps being in a pencil (especially for reds) to get a precise line. It also feels moisturizing... doesn't dry the lips at all. Their regular lipstick also feels moisturizing and has great color. Smashbox Photo Finish Lipstick With Sila-Silk™ Technology is super silky and moisturizing... so is Benefit Silky-Finish Lipstick as someone else mentioned. I have it in Candy Store, Jing-a-Ling and Dessert First. Bourjois Docteur Glamour Lipstick is also super hydrating.

Lipgloss: TheBalm BalmShelter SPF 17 Tinted Gloss. SPF in a lipgloss isn't so easy to find. I also love Tarte Inside Out Vitamin Lip Gloss which feels very moisturizing- it has BORBA skin protecting vitamins n stuff. I also like Stila Lipglaze.

ETA.... Eyecream: Kinerase is very, very moisturizing. I also like the MD Skincare Lift and Lighten. I really haven't found something that completely gets rid of the dark circles but mostly because it's just in my genes- pale, translucent skin... the blue just shows through.

I''m not a big make up person either and make up for my wedding was challenging to say the least. But I''ve found that I really love Trish McEvoy make up. She makes this awesome liquid, drops that you put on the cake liner and it automatically makes it waterproof. Very cool. I use Shu Umera eyelash curler and I''ve been using Jan Marini''s eyelash growing goop and damn does that stuff work like a charm! I use it on my eyebrows too in sparse areas. Right now, with that and the eyelash curler I dont even need mascara at all.

For skin care I used to use a mixture of Jurlique (organic line) and Z.Bigotti moisturizer, but I''ve switched to Kate Somerville and I love that line. She makes this serum called Quench which is gorgeous on the skin.

Here are some of my all-time favorites - I have a fair complexion with combo/dry skin:

Cleanser: alternate between Cetaphi and Philosophy Purity Made Simple
Sunscreen: Shiseido spf 55 Cream -incredible satiny finish, not greasy at all
Foundation: Armani Matte Silk Foundation -love the texture of this
Pressed/Loose Powder: Laura Mercier in Translucent -very natural looking
Blush: NARS Desire and Orgasm - best blushes ever!
Lipsticks: NARS - love the colors and texture
Eyeshadow - Shu Uemura, MAC and Stila
Liquid Eyeliner - MAC (so easy to use!)
Mascara - Diorshow Black - I will definitely try the Sephora brand though!!
