Here I am...confessing my sins...

Recently I took some old unwanted jewelry (mostly from the '70s) to an estate dealer in San Francisco. I was so proud of myself! I thought I was going to get out of there having received a check rather than having written one! (That would have been a 'first' for me LOL)

Soooo, we're finishing up our business and he starts to pull out a tray of rings. I protest: "No! I don't need or want any more rings!" (Sorta like an alcoholic being handed a tray of martinis...

)

Mid-protest, I spot this: A flame-red spinel, mounted in its original delicate Deco mounting.

I instantly caved. Spinel is a gemstone that's been missing in my collection and that I've been coveting. To find a nice one in an antique was too much for me. I'm a sick woman.

Here are pics: They're not the greatest..but you can get an idea. The stone does have some extinction, but is brilliant (especially in indoor light). Color: Fire Engine Red with slight orange undertone. Carat weight: I don't remember!!!

(I'll know when the appraisal comes in the mail...)

Having no idea what your ring size is, I am going to guesstimate the stone''s weight to be about 1.2ct or so on the Spinel, depending on how deeply cut it is..?

But usually a stone of that color wouldn''t be very deep.

It''s beautiful! I LOVE the setting...any pictures from the side? I am in LOVE with antique pieces... mostly Art Deco... What a find! Mind my asking about what you were squeezed for on this lovely? (approx?)

....handshot. (It really is brighter, and "redder" in real life)

Thanks for looking!

Congrats Widget! That''s The Color! Personally i don''t mind extinction in a brilliant stone at all.
How are the facets junctions doing, do you see any wear and tear?

The 1st step in beating an addiction is admitting you have a problem.....
the 2nd step is, to FedEx me that ring!!!!

Totally gorgeous, and I would say a good trade for old jewelry!!! It''s a beautiful color and looks like a gorgeous setting too!

Wow Widget, that is GORGEOUS!

Thanks, Nicrez! The price? I''ll never tell....suffice it to say I did end up writing a check, but not a big one this time. I did the math before I bought it, and remember thinking it was a pretty good price for a nice spinel this size. (OK...I think it was three carats, or something..)

Zero wear and tear! They repolished the stone before they offered it for sale...

Well, he assured me it is the original stone (repolished) in it's original platinum mounting. Age? Probably '20s-'30s.

The only 'story' I know is that it was offered for sale over Christmas by a well-known, high-end SF jewelry store (hint: first three letters: Shr) for way more than I paid for it. That's sort of fun...

Widget,

I''m in the bay area and am desperate for recommendations on estate dealers/jewelers. Would you mind sharing where you purchased that gorgeous ring?
