I just realized that, because of Covid, we haven't had our eyes checked in a LONG time. My FIL went legally blind because he delayed eye exams for a few years (had glaucoma, cataracts, AND macular degeneration). So, first thing tomorrow, I'll make our eye exam/pressure check appointments. We'll wear N95 masks during the appointments 'cause that's how we roll.

I wanna be able to SEE all my jewelry for a long time to come!

Don't forget your eye exams ladies and gents :)

How is your husband doing ?
Mine developed cataracts due to prolonged steroid eye drop use to treat a side effect of a lung disease sarcardosis
The pandemic has been a spanner in the works but i know if he had gone to the eye doctor way sooner we would not be in this predicament almost 3 years latter
He was seeing flashes in his vision and knew some thing wasn't right
But we have had wonderful eye specialists at our local hospital and they did save his site and he can legality drive again
we live in a smaller provincial city fortunate to have the doctors we do have
But the 2nd cataract is a bit tricky and needs to be done in Wellington
His pupil is stuck to the green bit (i just forget what the coloured part is called)
So we wait
And leave the curtains closed as his pupil does not dilate and sunlight hurts

we do get letters in the post reassuring us he has not been forgotten but im happy to not go into a big city right now with how the pandemic is here right now

I get a notification from my opticians to have my eyes checked every 2 years.

I also have a diabetic eye scan every ? years.

DK :))

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's eye problems @Daisys and Diamonds.
Hopefully he can get the 2nd cataract removed soon.

My husband is generally doing well but he really should be checked at least once a year because of family history/genetics. So I'm a little concerned since its been so long. Covid has really put a wrench in medical testing.

TIhank you and i hope your hubby can get an appointment soon
and all is well

The longer the pandemics goes along the longer serouse illnesses are going to be missed
i think we have been quite lucky where we live conspired to many places here and overseas

He recently got a bowel cancer screening test in the mail the local health board got out to everyone over a certain age (it was negative)
i guess it was an eaiser one to co-ordinate as 'the bussiness ' could be done at home and then posted back in the supplied courier envelope
It came with very detailed instructions with when the sample needed to be taken as NZ post does not deliver every day these days

I've had glaucoma for 10 or 15 years, and see a wonderful ophthalmologist at least 4 times a year for tests.
She prescribes 6 different eyedrops, and often adjusts dosage after seeing test results.
I've had laser surgery a few times to treat glaucoma, not for vision improvement.

So +1000 to Victoriangurl's post.
Many eye problems are progressive.
The longer you wait to catch it, the more damage to your eyes, sometimes irreversible.

Also, an ophthalmologist is an MD and more highly qualifed than any optician.
Most folks are directed to see an optician for check ups, who will refer you to an ophthalmologist if they spot problems starting.
I found out.
Some insurance companies will allow you to see an ophthalmologist OR an optometrist for the same copay.
I strongly recommend seeing the best expert possible as they may catch things earlier.
Eyesight is priceless.

Oh, and save your eyes wear sunglasses with good UV protection!
The younger you start the better, as damage is cumulative.
I've been wearing the same pair of Maui Jims for 10 to 15 years.
IMO they're the best and sharpest lenses, amazingly vibrant color when the glare is fully removed.
A couple years back broke the lenses and MJ replaced them in my old frames.

Costco has the best prices every day, but not a huge selection.
They also have seasonal "events" where MJ people set up a booth with a wide selection.

That's good that you're staying on top of it @dk168. I think my FIL was supposed to get eye scans for his diabetes but it was one of the tests he skipped for many years.

6 different kinds of eyedrops and multiple surgeries?! :-o:-o:-o
I hope your glaucoma is well-controlled @kenny!

Ty. I go annually bc I love getting new glasses! Lol.
But also, I go to the dentist twice a year for check up and cleaning, and to annual well woman exams, etc. I try to impress the importance of preventive care to all my loved ones and friends. Yet. Soooo many are plain lazy ! Even tho they have great health insurance, they resist their well women exams or dentist visits bc they dread the outcomes or the process! I mean. It’s not fun! Duh. But. People. Do it!

I guess I am one of those who would take up any of our government's health initiatives that is free, as that is one of the good things about our NHS (National Health Service) in UK.

This is so important - thank you for bringing this forward. We've seen too many patients that delayed their exams and have permanent damage as a result. Heartbreaking:cry2:

Please get your eyes examined regularly. If you have a condition, please get your follow up visits scheduled. Eye doctors often find evidence of medical problems (active strokes, past strokes, hypertension, diabetes, etc...) even before a PCP because it's evident in their eye exams.

Also worth noting: the back of the eye is the only place in the body where they can see your vascular and some key indicators of neurological health at the same time - without invasive procedures or expensive scans. Our bodies are amazing!

This was a good reminder to make an appointment for myself and my husband. I definitely need a prescription change. My driving glasses aren’t perfect anymore..I’m also wearing my reading glasses on the end of my nose permanently. I think I need bifocals..:geek2:
