Hi- So I love my new e ring and love my new wedding band...but I need some space between them because you lose the detail of the step cut band under the e ring. When I separate them, they don't stay that way, but I love the look! So, how do I know the best height and width for spacer band? Does it have to also be platinum I assume? ANY help or input is very much appreciated!! Thanks PS!

I have several friends that use 1 mm bands as spacers. They can be found on Etsy or special ordered in a variety of metals (HR series) from any jeweler who has a Stuller account.

You can use a little spacer band or choose a beautiful second band to wear between the two rings.

One example is Yenny's...

Re: Ring spacer/band questions

OOH thanks for the inpus this far! Also the beautiful photo of yenny's rings!

Dancing Fire-can I bother you for a photo? I think I would need at least a 2 mm spacer because of the style of my three stone...

Sorry I don't a pic on my hard drive. You should go to a local jewelry store and try on some 2mm-3mm plain rings.

Now I have a question.
My local jeweler said I should use a softer metal for a spacer, like sterling, so the spacer doesn't make a groove in the platinum. Then replace the spacer every five years or so.

The timing of this thread is very interesting. I just sent my wifes ER back to the jeweler for some major restoration work. He said the the struts holding up the halo are bent due to the height of the wedding band sitting next to it. So before spending a couple of hundred dollars on a plat spacer I ordered from amazon a 1mm and 2mm sterling silver ring spacer. By the way, the 2mm spacer was 99 cents, cheaper than the 1mm spacer, so for 99 cents I can be a sport and try it out when the rings arrive back from the jeweler.

I wouldn't do a sterling ring if you are planning on getting a 2mm band. I think it needs to look like part of your set! Plus sterling just won't stay the same color as the platinum.

Victor Canera makes a gorgeous engraved band in any width that would look beautiful with your new ring and if the wedding band has diamonds.

I have some rings stamped 925 and never need polishing after years of wear, no tarnishing whatsoever. But I have others also stamped 925 that needs frequent polishing. I can't figure out why. If you can find one that lasts, I'd think a sterling ring is fine. For those that show no tarnish, there are only scratches. It doesn't lose width. So there's no need to replace if you can find one like that.

diamondseeker-those VC ones are to die for...but yes, I have a carre cut band I will be wearing with it, so I was not financially prepared to add another expensive ring at the moment lol.

Jimmianne-I wonder why that is? I see some gorgeous handmade sterling ones on etsy. maybe a good temporary solution at least? very affordable and will be custom in my size.

liarfvb-beautiful! I love etsy-

I used to use two plain rings: one was a 2mm WB and one was an etsy 1.5mm ring in silver - not for the safety of the metals but bc I was uncomfortable with the gap caused by the ER setting and started stacking. I've since stopped using those - I still stack but with different bands that keep the gap which I love now.

I wasn't a fan of the silver because it tarnished often and didn't match if I didn't polish it often.

Thats what I thought I until I saw over 300 reviews and most people were blown away at the color and lack of maintenance of the ring.
Here is the link for anyone to read:

Here is the link for the 1mm band:

If you want a spacer, and just want to try it out, it sure is a whole lot cheaper than paying a few hundred dollars for a plat piece until you have made up your mind.

There was some thread on stacking rings years back where people were saying that when you stack a softer metal with a hard one, it can still damage the hard metal due to particulates getting embedded in it. Or something. I think the consensus was to stack the same kind for the least damage.

Unless one wears only one ring, they are going to rub some whether it is a spacer or wedding band. Mine show very little wear as they fit pretty well and don't spin a lot. So I think the spacer can be platinum or something like rose gold, etc. I wore a yg set for 30 years and it was still intact. The e-ring had a thin shank and it was a little thinner at the base. There was no noticeable difference in the wedding band. I expect platinum to last for generations since metal is not removed from wear like it is with gold. But it would take a really long time for something like a rose gold band to thin down from wear if the rings are treated with care. The thing the spacer helps avoid is the wedding band hurting the gallery or prongs of the e-ring, so it needs to be low enough to accomplish that.

My main goal is to actually keep my e ring separate from my carre band because other wise it is lost under my EC n traps-

Keep the helpful thoughts coming! Thanks!

I wear a 2mm plain band in the same metal to keep mine separate. That way I can still wear it as a plain band.

I am having one made in my size in Sterling silver from Etsy that I will try out before making a decision on what to do next. Feel nervous to bite the bullet and do platinum if I am unsure, thanks for all the pics/replies! SO helpful.

I have a .8mm rose gold spacer for my platinum rings. Haven't noticed the ring terribly out of round and despite its thinness, does the job. I'm attaching two pics, which show how it normally looks (fairly undetectable) as well as what it looks like when I make an effort t see the spacer.

Here is a 1mm spacer (14KY) that is barely noticeable but gets the job done. I had stopped wearing that shared prong ring because it was scratching the bottom prong of my e-ring. I also have a 14-X1 (white gold that doesn't need rhodium plating) one.

Thanks! That is me right above yours, I found a platinum eternity band at a local shop this week :)

(I would still love maybe a vintage engraved platinum band for the right price, but in the mean time, loving my sapphire square n round diamond band.)

Wife had the same problem so I bought her a 2mm ring.

DF, that works too. I also have 14KY and Platinum 2mm bands but prefer the 1mm because it is less noticeable.
