A friend at work had a custom e-ring made several years ago in yellow gold. Now his wife wears a lot of silver (colored) jewelry and wants to know if there''s anything they can do short of having the ring remade to change the color. Can it be bleached or dyed or plated with another color metal (can you plate yellow gold with white gold? yellow gold with platinum?)? If not, can he have the yellow gold melted and colored and recast (provided his original jeweler still has the mold) so that at least he doesn''t lose the value of the gold in the ring?

Rhodium plating to most people would be a stop gap as it looks pretty awful when it wears off yellow gold but it definately will work and done properly it should last a while - depending on how much it is worn etc.

The gold ring can be cast if a mould is taken of the ring. It might be easier, but if your ring is pave etc it will be hacked away at to remove the stones, so a mould of that is no use.. There is no telling if the ring was bought as a casting from a range offered by a casting house or if the mould is in-house.

good luck
