Been reading through this site, doing searches on Emerald-cut diamonds (because I''m obsessed with this site, with diamonds, and with not getting work done at my cube heh heh

). What I''ve found is there''s been a lot of talk about EC cuts and about large tables/too deep/too shallow/glassy/dead can make an "ugly" EC diamond.

I''ve tried to figure out what the numbers on my own EC diamond mean, to no avail, because fancy cuts don''t have the same kind of cut-and-dry information that RBs do. And I realize that a lot of it has to do with "what looks good to you." Unfortunately for this purpose, since I''m not much of a diamond genius almost every diamond looks good to me!

Which leads me to my question: what does an ugly EC look like? And if that''s not a universal answer, then what does it look like to you? Pictures? Descriptions? Opinions? Satiate my curiosity, please....

To me, an ugly emerald cut looks like a giant baguette.

I think a cut that is too shallow really ruins it for me. Also, clouds or feather inclusions would really ruin the table.

Unfortunately it really is a matter of what looks good to you. Assuming it's eyeclean...

My biggest pet peeve is symmetry. Followed by a glassy dead look caused by either a too big table or too low crown height... or some other combo that results in a lifeless look like a piece of glass.

Some people like large corners and large widmills, others are fine with smaller ones. Some like a large table, others want a tiny table. It's the same with cushions. Until your looking at it, it's a crud-shoot.

too rectangularish gives the sense like someone tried to "sqeeze the diamond" together. uneven faceting on teh pavilion giving the "steps" inside the emerald to be erraticly spaced. slanted sides and bad symmetry in general. corner angles not matching or sloped consistently.

I can''t handle bad symmetry where the steps are uneven (too thin or too fat or a mixture of both) and uneven corners. I also don''t like too much table glare that comes with a large tabled stone. I need the fire from a small table and high crown.

It also has to be very eye clean (almost from all angles too).

Other than that, I like those with large corners, small corners, fat and skinny ones (as long as it is under 1.6, anything over that looks too skinny for my tastes but there''s nothing wrong with it), and all sizes.
