Hi- I've been lurking these forums for the past couple of weeks trying to absorb as much information as possible. I'll be proposing to my girlfriend soon, and would like feedback from the community on the diamond I am currently thinking about getting. My budget for the ring is < $10,000.

The ring is a 1.26c H-VS2 VG Cut Round Diamond: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Very-Good-Cut-Round-Diamond-1389926.asp

I ran it through the HCA calculator and it comes in under 2 (grading score ~1.5). The idealscope picture seems to be good as well. I would like to pair it with either of these settings:

1) http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/channelset-rings/14k-white-gold-thin-channel-set-round-shaped-diamond-engagement-ring-11103w14.html

or

2) http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/channelset-rings/14k-white-gold-013ctw-channel-set-round-shaped-diamond-engagement-ring-11140w14.html

What do people think about the diamond I currently picked out and which setting do you think will go better with the diamond. Her ring size is 5.75 and she has petite hands. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Hi! Well, the diamond is pretty good. It gets very good on cut because of the thick girdle and depth is over 62.3%. A thick girdle means that the stone has weight in that area and the stone may face up smaller than it should if it had a thin to medium girdle. A stone that weight in excellent cut usually will face up at 6.9mm+. I would honestly rather go to a 1.2 GIA Excellent cut stone that faces up around the same size as this one.

I strongly favor the thinner of the two settings. A thicker band tends to make the center stone look smaller.

Thanks Diamondseeker!

Would you prefer this diamond over the one I posted in my original post: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1546431.asp

The depth is 62.5% but has a much thinner girdle at 3.5% (vs. 5%).

PS- Not to complicated things too much, but is it worth it to move down from VS2 to SI1 or Color from H to I to save $2-3K? From various posts in the forums, I get the sense that SI1/I is a good price/performance area.

No go with the better color and clarity . I buy diamonds for a gold buying dealer and we get S1 all the time and be sure to either buy certified stones or have your stone certified for future upgrade or resale.

That stone is better, in my opinion, but I just wish they had others that didn't have the depth below 62.3. Still, I would buy this one over the other one. Regarding color and clarity, I think H VS2 is a very fine choice. In fact, it is my personal minimum. But you will find many others who prefer larger stones and will go down in color and clarity to get it. I can see tint face up in some I color stones, so I have a little apprehension about I color unless you can see the stones in person.

I'll look at the diamond search and see if I see any other possibilities, but this 1.2 is better. I love that it has medium blue fluorescence because that may make it appear even whiter!

Hi Heididdl and Diamondseeker- Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep my search at VS2/H as the minimum Clarity/Cut.

Diamondseeker- I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks again!
