So heres my initial renderings for my mq solitaire. Id like some opinions. Its so simple its hard for me to visualize.

its white gold head, yellow gold shank, the shank will be brushed/matte

my thoughts so far: is the stone set too high? what is the mm width of the shank? and the basket needs to taper down to the donut a little more, tucking it in under the stone a little bit more

So you'll do a tapered shank, not a graduated shoulder? I like the idea of more metal showing on the shank because you're doing a brushed type finish so my preference would be graduated but moving on...for a tapered shank, I think 2-2.2mm would be perfect. Any wider and the pinch looks too exaggerated.

For me, the finishing of the prongs will be critical (obviously this has nothing to do with your renderings). I see so many marquise sets with horribly spaced out prongs or prongs that are too bulky-sticky-outtie at the points. So, whoever is doing your ring, be super picky about the prongs (if that's your thing). I do like the three strand prong at the tips (provided they're well executed). And the side prongs and really close together which makes for a nice look.

This is going to be a killer ring! So my thoughts, I agree about the basket being tucked in. Love the three prong tip idea!
Can't wait to see how this turns out :))

It's beautiful. I don't know if I would taper the shank though.

Yeah I don't like taper either but I think he did it because that way the shank is the same width as the prongs.

I could turn the prongs into 3 claw like n/s, I think that might fix the issue, but would that be too much?

Gosh I'm torn. I really like the 2 prongs on the EW prongs vs the 3 prongs, but I understand why the taper to match the 2 prongs. I think I vote to keep the taper and the 2 prongs, so totally ignore everything I've said and the CADs are great.

It looks great Niel! I love the 3 prongs at the ends as well--say, did you catch Logan Sapphires thread on her brushed 18k band, it is gorgeous. I envision yours looking very similar to her band.

I love that band, though I haven't made up my mind on the hammered part.

Here's what I was thinking about the finish

Ok, now I see the difference, hers is hammered--vs you're leaning towards brushed. So many details to decide. Yes, brushed would look better on a setting such as yours, vs a single band, where I like her hammered finish. Great choices Niel! :)

I love that east west setting as well--but in your case, I understand not wanting another e-w type setting...like your 5 stone. Who did that e-w setting in this picture above--I can't remember.

I'm of no help. I think you should set it E/W exactly like the one you have posted a few up - that's KILLER to ME. Best of luck with your fun project though.

Don't get me wrong. I love love love that setting. I've been oushing y mother to set hers that way. But I need it to look visually different than my other ring, or else I feel like I'm just buying the same ring again. Kwim?

Love those prongs.

If you're getting brushed metal, there's still a number of ways it could be finished (uni-directional, cross-directional, angled, and then there's brushed and hammered). I like uni-directional best, personally. But you've probably sorted this aspect out already. Boone rings had some good descriptions for different kinds of finishing, just so you don't get wires crossed with your vendor (http://www.boonerings.com/special-styles/finishinfo.htm). My fav brushed finished is by Niessing:

Thanks so much! No I haven't decided what kind of finish yet, so I'll have to take a look. I love that one you posted.

New photos with some measurents. I decided to leave the height as is. He says this is the normal height and I believe him. The basket has been tucked. I like it.

Now my question to you. Being that its tapering in to 1.6mm, I think I'm going to have him cast it with the while shank at 2.5

This is my personal opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but 1.6 would be too thin for me, I liked the shank showing as equal rather than tapered as in the original rendering. 2.5 would be great.

& all those finish choices, egads, who knew??

I hear that, but I think the taper is pretty quick, so I don't think a lot of not is under 2mm.

I have similar concerns but I asked to see the wax as that's the only way I'll know for sure

I really love the tucked basket. And I think 2.5mm is great. I also wear a 7 and anything 2 or smaller gets lost on my hand.

My only concern is I kinda love how it looks now, and I know wax is bulker, so should I bulk it out a bit?

Yeah. I told him I wanted it to look like the wax does now, I didn't want it thinner.

The wax looks great Niel! I agree with having it made exactly like the wax, not thinner

Totally agree. The wax is the perfect width. Won't get lost on your finger and isn't anywhere close to bulky; still delicate and feminine.
