Hello everyone I am currently looking for an engagement ring for my long time partner, I figure we have 3 kids its about time!
But seriously she is an amazing woman and I would have married her sooner if she showed any interest! So recently conversations have gone that way and it seems like she will say yes if I ask! So I told my mom and she said "you better not get her a ring from the mall". Well that crushed me because that's what I was going to do! What do I know! So I started my diamond education...

And I'm swamped covered up! I thought I was doing good by learning about cut, clarity, color, and of course the "almighty" carat.
So I started looking and thinking I was getting somewhere, then I see about florescence and table size and I'm clear stumped and dumb founded.

Now she says she likes all the different shapes and to get something small because it wouldn't matter if it was from a cracker jack box.
I reckon the cracker jack box ring wouldn't work though somehow! We have 3 children so our budget is tight but I managed to put up 800 dollars and I reckon I got two hundred my buddy owes me coming so for 1000 I was trying to find something as nice and special I could be.
I was thinking I could go with a J color since her name is Justine and Ive seen alot of nice comments about people with J rings being real white lookin and not yellow and I thought that might save a few dollars. And I reckon the setting maybe the 190 one in white gold from blue nile maybe and might find a .3 or .4 diamond in the price range of 1000? I just want it to be nice lookin as can be since its so small.
It's pretty intimidating to post up here for help with a price range like that but I take good care of my family, there just isn't much left after, but love! I reckon I can do a little better than a cracker jack box for 1000 or so (maybe not much better but hey around here oatmeal beats no meal!)

So yet again a clueless man bows before you begin for help! Can anyone help me find something nice? I was thinking maybe a Marquis cut J color stone might be had around half a carat for 700 or so, maybe that would help it look a little bigger, but from what I see a J you gotta pick the right stone to get the nice illusion affects of pure whiteness? Is a marquis any more danger of falling out of a setting? If anyone with some expertise would be kind enough to spend a minute or two to help and old southern gentleman like me out I'd sure appreciate it!

Have you ever considered saving money and purchasing a genuine Antique ring or preloved? Something like this;

http://loupetroop.com/listings/rings-natural-diamond-center/0-dot-40ct-old-european-cut-oec-14kt-yellow-gold-diamond-ring

http://www.diamondbistro.com/category/216/Natural-Diamond-Center/listings/41030/5-half-carat-G-diamond-solitaire-platinum-ring.html

Other shapes like pears, marquise, ovals and emerald cuts visually face up larger as well.... if they are set correctly they are no more likely to fall out of a setting than anything else.

It's a stock sample photograph - not a picture of the real stone. With fancy cuts, you need to see the stone to make sure it doesn't have any glaring deficiencies. Marquise cut are often subject to a big bow tie in the centre which most find very ugly. I think the antique style one posted previously is really lovely and has a lot of presence for its price.

Does this one seem to bowtie to you?

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/marquise-cut/0.51-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-sku-31386

if I did that and this maybe (thats 1050 for that set up) ? http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-white-gold-2mm-knife-edge-solitaire-engagement-ring-six-prong-item-7990

I kinda like that one has a nice shape. I guess 6 prong is best for marquis? I'm leaning heavy that way, seems to be a good way to get somethign that will face up well for so little money...

or Maybe this one?

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/marquise-cut/0.48-carat-h-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-324316

Im starting to look at antique stuff now too, its alot out there, o boy.

I think both these stones look like pretty nice stones for your budget. I also like the pear posted above. I think any of them
would make a beautiful ring.

Any of these of interest?

http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/rings/...ncess-cut-diamond-halo-ring.html#.VJBAjLn9nbg

or maybe this unset stone? I know it's a teeny tiny bit above budget, but Erica offers layaway terms. And this is a nice antique diamond.

http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/0-51ct-old-european-cut-diamond-uncerted-g-h-vs2/

I did find a stone on Diamonds by Lauren but it sold before I could post it :(

Or you could try something like this? I think they do have simple settings which would work out pretty close to your budget ...

Hi!

I think the budget is very important in this case. I recently purchased a ring from Dubai and it was quite cheap compared to the U.S market. It has to be the 0% tax on diamonds. :hand:

I live in Dubai and, to be honest, I haven't found any diamonds here to be cheaper than the USA when comparing the same cut, colour, clarity, carat.

Plus I don't think the OP is planning on travelling overseas to buy the ring so your comments are not really helpful.

Ditto what tyty said... I'm loving on the marquise for the simple fact that it give soooo much more finger coverage than the pear...

And I think a six prong is the way to go with marquise stones. :))

Pear: 6.82 x 3.00
MQ: 8.22 x 3.84

The MQ is gonna look a LOT larger -- which will be nice on a size 7 finger. 8) ;))

Thanks everyone! Niel I went with the one you found. 1080 shipped and on the way!
I reckon we can upgrade the setting later on down the line.
That one looked similar on paper to the one I picked but it just has a look to it, seems more sparkly and sharp idk, im no expert!.

here was mine http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/marquise-cut/0.51-carat-i-color-vs1-clarity-sku-31386

here is Niels I ordered. :D http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/marquise-cut/0.51-carat-i-color-si1-clarity-sku-324319

It just seems to have more sparkle and presence somehow.
I got the 6 prong setting in white gold 14k.

Thank you everyone! Hopefully its the winner, I was up all night!

Did they give you the 15% discount on the setting?

If not give them your order number and ask. Should save you a little more. Get closer to 1000

And I'm soooo glad you bought this. Its a stunning stonebin real life and someone needed to buy it.

I thought you might like a few of the other photos. My finger is a 7.5 for reference on the first one. It doesn't sparkle because it has tape on it haha.

Thank you for the comparison pics, it looks like it will look nice and face up pretty good for the price, it sure has a special sparkle to her!

Ill be sure to post pics for you guys, thanks again!

They sure did give me the 15% discount so 1053 out the door!

I got a little confused with James Allen verification process but I think it's all worked out.
I just wish they mentioned that part somewhere! :wavey:
