We''ve been showing the ImaGem Light Behavior unit to various professionals and sometimes we find diamonds which are sold as "Ideal" or some other branded superlative not all working as well as the owners of the stones had hoped they''d perform. We see single brands with 3 to 5 levels of light behavior. We give the participants the results and they are somewhat disappointed that their fine stone wasn''t all that consistently superb. Initially, we see doubt and dismay, but with encouragement and a few weeks time, we see they can just tweak their parameters to give themselves a stronger performing, more consistently cut diamond with no economic disadvantage.
One must keep in mind that diamonds are like beautiful faces. There are many very distinctive and different beautiful faces. It is up to human nature AND personal taste which face or faces most appeals to each one of us. Some of the special cut branded diamonds just don''t quite look like Tolkowsky ideal cuts. However, they can be very pretty and prefectly acceptable as a branded stone. With just a little effort on the part of their cutters they can be even more perfected without losing their individuality and still retain their particular version of good looks.
Tradition and simplicity or the pricing model are viewed as crucial to the diamond business. Little by little tradition is being replaced with technology and growing complexity replaces old style simplicity. The fear that diamonds will become a commodity seems not te be taking place as the subject becomes more complex rather than more simple as time passes. Competition may increase and margins may be tightened, but it takes expertise to navigate the many choices being presented.
