A member of AGS conforms to the AGS Code of Ethics if they hope to remain a member. There is a committee at AGS that investigates complaints and every once in a great while they ask a member to resign. A serious ethical problem is rare among good jewelers, but there are enough bad ones that it seems everyone is somewhat corrupt. It really is not the case. Being careful is always the best anyway.
Some very fine jewelers are not AGS members, so don't make an AGS membership your only factor in judging what store is a good one. It is a definite plus if all the other factors such as personality and service come together.
