This is a summary from an article in prevention magazine that suggests 7 foods that should stay in your diet even though many people try to avoid them while trying to lose weight or eat healthy.
As always the key is not eliminating any particular food but to eat it in moderation. We all have to find the method that works for us.
Below are the foods the article says you should continue to eat and why.
Bread is an excellent source of carbohydrates which boost brain chemicals and curb overeating. As your body digests carbohydrates it releases insulin and channels a chemical in to the brain making you feel calm, happy and have fewer cravings. Whole grains are the healthiest breads and one serving is one slice, a small roll or half of an English muffin.
Pasta and rice are about 70% water and by eating fluid-rich foods you will fill full longer and since pasta is a carbohydrate it has the same effects on the brain as breads.
Potatoes are good for you if they are boiled or baked. They form resistant starch in your large intestine which is a fiber that burns fat. A healthy potato serving is the size of a fist.
Peanut Butter is rich in healthy fats and can help banish belly flab. PB is high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids and prevents accumulation of fat around the midsection, boosts calorie burn and promotes weight loss. A snack that includes peanut butter can help you stay full for a few hours. PB is high in calories so stick to a 2 tablespoon portion.
Cheese is a great source of calcium which burns calories and fat. At about 100 calories per ounce cheese is often on a do not eat list but its calcium improves your ability to burn calories and fat. If you don’t get enough calcium a hormone can be released that can cause the body to store fat. Stick to no more than 2 ounces of cheese and choose the light varieties to save calories but still get the calcium.
Dark Chocolate satisfies the most common craving for those on a diet. Having a small bite or two of this favorite treat is not really that bad for you. Some studies suggest it is even good for your heart. Keep you consumption to a minimum and savor every bite and you’ll find that little piece more satisfying than wolfing down an entire candy bar.
Fruit soothes a sweet tooth and is lower in calories than most sweets. Fruit does contain natural sugar fructose but it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels like table sugar and most fruit contains a lot of water and fiber. Aim to have about 3 servings of fresh fruit a day skipping high calorie fresh fruit juice. A typical serving of fresh fruit is about 1 cup.
Have a great Monday.

Hola!
Marcy - GREAT opener! I think we are all to quick to jump into the low carb diets without fully grasping what happens when we do. Some of the foods listed above are so essential! I find when I give up grains completely I feel sluggish. The same for fruits. Carbohydrates feed the brain!

I had a ho hum weekend eating wise. Got in lots of riding and full workouts both days. Also went and rode ATVS for an entire day yesterday... if you have never done this... great core work

Marcy~ check check and check. Glad I never even THOUGHT of removing those foods from MY diet! lol. I really agree that moderation is key. I don''t believe in "bad foods" just "bad habits."

Not much to add to the thread again. sorry.

I had another baby appt today. She has a bit of improvement with her heart and is growing right on track. We have to see my reg doc again in a week and then the specialist a couple weeks after that. I''m still supposed to "take it easy" to avoid any stress on this little one. I''ve been trying to be a bit active every day without over doing it.

That''s all for now. Have a great day!

Hi everyone. Work wasn’t too bad today but tomorrow will be challenging.

Food was good today. Woo hoo!

Dragonfly, I agree some people give up some of the basic food groups and that is probably not very good for your nutritional needs. I know I feel bad if I don’t have some carbs, proteins, fruits and vegetables. The chocolate is just a bonus not a necessity. I bet riding an ATV works a lot of muscles.

Somethingshiny, I so agree it is more bad habits than bad foods. Moderation is always the key. I am so glad to hear the baby’s heart is doing better and she is growing right on track. Take it easy.

Maevie, looks like you did good on food today too.

I am off to grade more papers. Their term paper was due yesterday so that is keeping me busy tonight.

Happy Monday all!

We had taco night this evening, and tomorrow will be wild caught salmon. Yum! IMO, way better than farm raised. I had a salad w/ romaine, mushroom, red pepper, and carrots for lunch along with some hummas on a whole wheat flatbread. I did some weights and abs tonight.

Marcy- THANK YOU for the wonderful opener! It always stumps me why so many people try to eliminate carbohydrate completely as they are energy and you need them as a part of a balanced diet. Like I''ve said many times before, moderation is key and IMO, the hardest part of changing to a healthier lifestyle. I think once you grasp that you can and should eat from every food group, it makes eating that something sweet way less guilty.

dragonfly- So, going back awhile; a protein shake daily to promote muscle repair/growth? Do you cut calories elsewhere to compensate for the shake?

ss- Again, hope you and your LO are doing well. I''m glad to hear the improvement with her heart. That''s wonderful news!

Maevie- What, no popcorn for dinner?? I kid, I kid! Your eats are wonderful and healthy! Congrats!

Beach Runner, tacos are one of my favorites and you can make them so healthy. I am meeting my parents for supper tomorrow night - I am getting a small steak, baked potato with butter on the side and pack 1/2 of it up for lunch the next day. Moderation is always the key.

I got cold while grading papers so I put on my sweats. Then I "walked" the house and how I wish I had not put on my sweats. LOL. I do have a 2 degree temperature tolerance. Ha Ha.

Off to see I have more papers to grade.

Happy monday folks!

Food wise was pretty bad this weekend. A good friend had her bachelorette, so there was lots of drinking and lots of spending money.
7.gif
This week, I''ll be double good and do majority salads for lunch. Dinners I''ll stick to just one helping and no drinking. Sis sprained her ankle on Friday so there was lots of driving her around this afternoon to her doctor appt and x-ray. Luckily it''s not a fracture and she''s now hobbling along with no crutches. The doc doesn''t want her to use the crutches to much otherwise she''ll loose her range of motion etc.

I finished my taxes this weekend, and dinner tomorrow will be pot roast (even though it''s geting too warm for pot roast now...)

Marcy, what a wonderful opener! Definitely moderation is key to our lifestyle.

Dragon, great job on the work outs.

Shiny, so glad to hear the little girl is doing well.

Maevie, sounds like your eats are going well. THat''s half the battle

Beach, tacos are so tasty :) James said he''ll make it for me but he never does.

Hi all
35.gif
!

i''ve been really busy for the past week, but i''ve been doing my best to eat healthy and workout. i snuck in a 7am workout before the kids woke up
9.gif
. i didn''t want to, but i pushed myself.

I made turkey meatballs last night and they were delish...i did have pasta with them, but i diidn''t overindulge in the pasta...just enough to satisfy my carb craving
1.gif
. tonight i may make grilled chicken and veggie wraps...so easy and yummy.
for lunch i''m going to have a pb n j on whole wheat bread....and celery for a snack. i find i eat better when i plan out my meals. it cuts down on me munching on junk all day. otherwise i''m grabbing for a piece of candy here, a bag of chips there....lol

so i measured myself this morning and i''ve lost inches!!!!!
36.gif
36.gif
36.gif

on march 14th my measurements were:
waist 31
chest 37
hips 39

this morning they were:
waist 28 1/2
chest 34 1/2
hips 36

i can''t believe my healthy habits are really paying off...it gives me the motivation to do more. i feel like my measurements are showing a bigger change than the scale...and to me inches are more important to lose than pounds

Keep at it everyone....it WILL pay off.

Beach - It actually fits in with my daily intake. I am right now maintaining 1800-2000 calories, and working to build muscle while reducing fat but still maintaining my weight. The protein I use is 154 calories with only 5 g carbohydrates but a high level of multiple types of protein to help for long term satiation and muscle building. With skim milk it''s around 260 270 calories? It ends up being my post workout drink, while my body is trying to restore, or sometimes my breakfast (with a small snack mid morning) if I''m in a super rush. I use Myofusion protein, vanilla flavored. It''s really good!

Hello ladies! (and rod)
35.gif

I did speedwork today; 8x400m. It''s wild salmon with broccoli and couscous for eats tonight. Yum! I had another wonderful salad at lunch (romaine, red pepper, mushroom, carrots, leftover taco meat) I had two inquires about starting to run from co-workers today! I forwarded them the couch-5k program.

marcy- I know, I love tacos, and they are healthy. You can make them unhealthy too, but, of course we don''t, right? Man, your steak dinner sounds wonderful!

Maevie- Your Starbucks drink sounds yummy!

lisa- Oh no to your sis''s injury. That''s awful. I hope she has a speedy recovery!

NYC and pinki- You GO ladies! That''s so great!!

dragonfly- Thanks for the info. I think I may try this out as a part of my breakfast.

Hi everyone. My day was as Rod would say “UBER” stressful. I am so looking forward to a month from now when we won’t be so crazy busy. There will be a lot of bad days between now and then though.

Food was good except a little extra at supper. I cut up ½ of my steak for a sandwich tomorrow. My dad and I had a margarita but we passed on dessert.

Marty texted me he was in a limo on the way to a multi course meal. I told him it’s going to be a big letdown for him when he gets home. Ha ha.

Lisa, sorry to hear about your sister. I am glad she doesn’t need crutches now. Sounds like you had a very fun weekend. I hope your pot roast was tasty tonight.

NYC Sparkle, congratulations on losing inches. That is marvelous! I so agree if you plan out your food for the day it helps keep you from straying, nibbling and snacking.

Pinki, congratulations to your shrinking body in pounds and inches. That is terrific!

Dragonfly, anything vanilla flavored has got to be good.

Beach Runner, that is great 2 people are interested in running at work. So true you can make tacos healthy and unhealthy.

Have a great evening.

greetings all :)
time for my daily food log
had a bit of a snacky day and a hard time not eating junk tonight

breakfast: apple crisp (I promise it was healthy though! made with no sugar, just a splash of orange juice, apples, whole wheat flour, oatmeal, spices and a little bit of margarine - no worse than the homemade bread I make :))
snack: 2 small tea cookies
lunch: 5 mini oranges, yogurt, handful of pecans, carrots, snow peas
snack: 2 small tea cookies
supper: baked chicken, coconut brown rice, asparagus with parmesan, a glass of milk
snack: 2 marshmallows, airpopped popcorn with margarine and seasoning, 5 ricecakes (the bottom of the bag) and about 11 cheesies before I forced myself to put the bag away!

I was totally STARVING today - PMS I think.. makes me incredibly hungry for no real reason

no exercise- I have designated this week the eating well and sleeping well goals week
I am trying to not eat chocolate on weekdays -we''ll see how that lasts.. such a battle!

Maevie, your apple crisp sounds good and healthy too. I love apples especially with cinnamon like a baked apple.

Dragonfly, did I miss your birthday? Happy Birthday. I hope to go to bed a bit early tonight.

I just noticed I listed the name of the thread this week as "tread". D''oh!

Hi everyone. What a day. Yes it was stressful and yes I ate chocolate. I am on a sugar buzz right now. I was at work 75 minutes early and worked late. My boss was out sick which just added to my fun. Yippee!

Marty is on his way home right now. He should be here in about an hour.

Well, I am off to grade papers.

Hey ya''ll.
Wednesday was work from home and I loved every minute of it. I had a veggie burger and did about 5.5 miles today.

Marcy- I''m a vanilla nut. Can''t get enough of it. I have vanilla beans in my sugar jar so my sugar has a hint of vanilla flavor to it. Yum!

dragonfly- Happy Birthday! I hope you enjoyed your day. How did you like Jillian''s yoga? I need to find a yoga workout.

Maevie- I get hungrier during AF time as well. Your baked apple crisp sounds wonderful!

NYC, FANTASTIC results! Turkey meatballs. Yum yum!!! It used to be easy for me to pass on pasta, but my brother got us into *fresh* pasta. OMG! I think i''m going to start making it with whole wheat so it''s a little bit healthier.

Pinki, FANASTIC results to you too!!! You should feel awesome you got some SERIOUS accomplishments under your belt (pun intended).

Beach do you run on a track? How do you measure out your distances so precisely? I know, sis''s injury is not very helpful, but at least it''s early. If she''s really good she still might be able to do the marathon. Fingers crossed!

Marcy, hugs to you my friend. I''m hoping your good days will far outshine your stressful ones. It''s gotten too warm for pot roast so I''m freezing it to reheat next week when it''s back down to the 60s.

Maevie, the eats are sounding really good. Sleep is so important too and for most of us, one of the first things we let slip.

I hit the gym today FINALLY. I blew off yesterday for happy hour with friends so made up for it today. I did a short weight set and a short interval. I walked home (~1 mi) to add to the day''s activity. Not too bad. Dinner was grilled pork tenderloin made sweet & sour style. It ended up being sweet & SPICY I chopped up a habanero. James and I eat *hot* but that was **HOT**!
18.gif
Still tasty.

Tomorrow is my interview! I"m really hoping the company presents me with a position that fits what I"m looking for. The HR person presented me with positions MUCH jr to where I am now. I''ve got 3-5 yrs MORE experience than they posted for those positions. But the Hiring manger sounded like he liked me so I"m hoping they''ll make a more sr. level position for me. I''m not looking for mgr, but just not grunt. Y''know? Anyway, we''ll see how it goes.

That''s all for me. I think I''m going to try to start hitting the gym in the mornings, and running in the evening.

Hello, all!

I really miss being a real part of this thread.

For the last 2 days I''ve been absolutely starving. Apparently baby thinks she needs something. But, I need to watch what I''m consuming a bit more. When that pregnancy hunger strikes, it''s very hard to ignore!

Still on "take it easy" but I''ve been doing some gardening and more house remodeling. We''re working on removing and replacing drywall in JT''s room right now. We will build in some shelves where there''s currently a closet too. Then it''s on to the baby''s room but really only for a facelift and some closet alterations. Then we''ll lay our new laminate flooring. We''re also replacing a few windows but I''m trying really hard to hire someone to do it instead of putting it on our plate.

That''s all I''ve got.

Marty made it home safe and sound. Yippee. We might plan a vacation to Vegas. Decisions, decisions.

Lisa, home pasta is great. Thanks for the hugs and wish for good days. I have a great time working for me and together we get through the day. We are all putting in extra time but we are just doing what it takes. I am very grateful to have them working for me; in the past I’ve had one or two that wasn’t pulling their weight and it sure was a drag on the rest of the team. Good luck on your interview tomorrow.

Somethingshiny, we love to hear from you too. Sorry to hear you are having some major hunger spells. For taking it easy a remodeling project sounds like a lot of work to me. I hope you are just supervising.

I am off to clean my jewelry and get ready for bed. Maybe I’ll dream of giant diamonds and sapphires.

I''m sorry your day will be stressful today Marcy - good luck making it through!

I suceeded in getting out of bed early even though I didn''t have to (today is my late shift day) and I have some whole wheat bread in the bread machine now, and I''m heading downstairs to the elliptical to force myself to exercise for a few minutes :)

Thanks Maevie and Marcy! I needed it desperately. I was starting to think that maybe I was meant to be 170 forever. LOL.

Marcy - I hope your day doesn''t get as stressful as you anticipate!

Maevie - OOh, now I''m wondering if I should have registered for a breadmaker. Sounds delicious.
