A number of years ago I had the good fortune to bein in Cape Town for business. Although totally cliche, a proposal on top of Table Mountain, overlooking the city and the ocean, at sunset would be beautiful indeed. The view is spectacular! You can buy a lovely bottle of South African up there wine and sip that as the sun goes down, with a view of other mountain tops and the ocean. There may be a number of people around, as it's typically busy at that time of day, but you should be able to find privacy for your moment. Make a backup plan though - if it's windy or the visibility is poor, the gondola does not make the trip up.
There are also several beautiful beaches in the area that are quite secnic, and would also make for nice proposal locations. Stellenbosch (my spelling may be off here), close to Cape Town, has many wineries, and is a really charming town with spectacular mountain views, that would be sure to offer up someplace really romantic for your proposal. I have some friends that live there, and will ask for some specific recommendations...

My friends in Cape Town have come through with some recommendations. If you want Dr. M's name to mention to the jeweller, please PM me and I will forward them to you.

Here's the contents of the email message:

The best jeweller in Cape Town is Uwe Koetter. He has been around for
many years and is well known for excellent quality. Dr M says that your
friend will find the best value there and can be sure that it will be the
real thing and the best quality. He knows Uwe very well and said that
your friend could tell him that he referred them there. The telephone
number is 021 425 7770. He is on the fifth floor in Amway House, Dock
Road, Cape Town. It is just opposite the entrance to the Waterfront when
you come in on the N1, but it would be best for them to phone him and get
the proper directions.

Stellenbosch is not good for the proposal, as it is a student town and
therefore overrun with that species. Everybody does it on Table Mountain,
so skip that too. The wind might blow you off at this time of year in any
case. The recommended place is Franschhoek, which is a most beautiful,
romantic town in the mountains. There is a very good restaurant, called
Reubens. Dr M's daughter, Lida-Marie, and her fiancé both work there.
The place opened only recently and is so successful that it is classed as
one of the best restaurants in South Africa. We thought that this would
be a very special place for a proposal. One has to book a table as they
are quite popular. The phone number is 021 876 3772. I haven't been
there yet, but it is in the main street of Franschhoek. We are going
there for a lunch in December. We've formed a small group of friends from
the info centre and also a few other nice friends. We try to have lunch
together at a special place a few times a year. We've decided on Reubens
for December. Your friend might want to give them a call and tell them
what he intends. I'm sure they'll think up something really special to
make it unforgettable.

I hope that this has helped! If you need any other info, just let me
know. Dr M sends his regards. He said to tell you that his typing is up
to XXX (oops) and therefore he is using me as go-between. Keep well and let me
know how things went with them. I really hope that it would be special.

Can I just say thank you so much for that, I've been on the site and will contact them via email. I'll also look into the restaurant idea, I agree Table Mountain isn't always the best place to be when the wind gets up :) Let hope she says yes!!

Thanks again for all your help
