Me too! I used to be a liberal until I saw all the waste (and hate they deny) from them. Then switched to conservative but hated things about them, too. They never shrink government, they grow it less than Democrats but never shrink it. Now I am a Libertarian. I want government waste to stop! I want our freedoms back so badly. Both sides take away freedoms from certain groups. Rand Paul is more libertarian but runs as a Republican for a few reasons.

Hate they deny? strong words, I would say liberals can't understand conservatives and think libertarians haven't gotten over freshmen year of English Lit I, The Fountainhead. People really don't want libertarian-ism..it's unAmerican, but no reason to not wish for it I suppose.. I see so many problems with the whole thing, but one thing I do like about libertarianism is its total lack of concern for their neighbor, community, the movement is honest, frankly though, after living in Texas with those Toll for profit roads and how people avoided them like the plague, I don't think it would cut it in New England. Conservatives are similar in thought with their comrade's the libertarians, but don't like to admit it, they say they are compassionate. Of course, I am a capitalist at heart, as I suppose you are too! I just can't help but want to also take some of that great capital and assist those less fortunate. I worry that libertarianism will eventually fall to anarchy. Communism didn't work, nor socialism.. it's a changing world for sure.

Do you think now that Trump is our new anointed that we are falling into fascism? I do.. Since 9/11 we have been falling more deeply into populist ultra-nationalism, used to be cops were your friend, now they look like stormtroopers, cops are revered, FIRST responders! used to be they wanted to be part of the community, with all the adulation their heads have grown.. I love the police, they are her to serve, I also think they should be paid starting salary of 125K per year, anywhere, with this they will have more repect, more responsive to doing a good job (sort of like free market!!!)!

from Wiki: fascism is "a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.

That about sums up what I have seen since 9/11 and the rise of Trumpism. Trumpism is defined by me as a reactionary and easily used by enemies of the country.. time will tell.. we all know what happens when protectionism rules.

The world is small.

Below is what I experienced in Atown.. a road I had travelled for years all of a sudden became a circuitous nightmar if I didn't want ot pay the toll - which there are no toll collectors, only having the toll tag (which I have in NE now btw) but in Atown, I didn't need to use any toll type roads except to go to the damn oral surgeon for my original implants, what a pain, I don't believe in for profit tolls, and it seems no one in Atown did either.. people don't mind paying a toll if they think somehow someway the toll will help the roads, a bridge, something that they MAY get a bennie from but into the pocket of a baron type, nope.

http://usa.streetsblog.org/2016/10/18/private-toll-road-backed-by-430-million-in-federal-funds-goes-bust/
http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/texas-news/texas-lawmakers-explore-ending-toll-roads_/111023631

Trump wants an infrastructure with lotsa new toll roads.. people don't like them unless they see a benefit.

We do need NEW bridges believe me I drive between New England and Texas a couple of times a year.. but just zippity do and add a toll for some company to collect (that we the taxpayers helped btw), that is not what I think will work.

Sorry about all the musings, I'm terribly worried about where my beloved America is going..

Peace.

First, Trump really has nothing to do with liberty, at all, which is why I did not mention him. Bush, Obama and Trump are bad for America. Many things are contributing to the fascism growing in this country, not just Trump or the police. Liberals need to wake up and realize they helped make this mess. All of it comes back down to making laws that punish non violent behavior, which liberals and conservatives are guilty of.
Unamerican to want liberty? Our country was founded on liberty. I think instead of literature you need to read some history and economics. I truly believe if you did some real reading on libertarianism you would realize it isn't a "lack of concern for you neighbor" but more a concern for government overreach and concern, which you seem to be seeing yourself.

Toll booths are pretty great, IMO. I happily paid the toll here in Atlanta to avoid traffic, then they ruined it by getting rid of it. I am sure people have an attitude similar to "I already pay taxes for these roads, why the hell should I pay a toll" and that is why they are avoided by many, thus not enough money to fix the roads. There are many other ways to pay for roads: "toll tag", advertising, donations. I am sure with technology advancing it will get easier and easier to find ways to pay for the roads.
Same with charity. We already pay so much in taxes, why donate? This is the attitude of many people who already pay taxes. My husband pays 20k in taxes and gets taxed 40% on his bonuses, we stopped giving to charity when we realized it was just way too much (although we foster dogs for the local AC and are about to adopt to add another child to our family).

Libertarians are very generous people and do show concern for their neighbors. Thus, the reason we don't need government to force it for us. We willingly give instead of telling the government to do it for us. We believe that charity will do the job even better withless waste. The reason charities are not doing it now is that government has made it nearly impossible with high taxes, way too many regulations, making it illegal to feed the homeless in many cities....the list can go on and on. Did you know scientists found that neanderthals took care of their sick and elderly? If THEY did, why wouldn't we? We absolutely would if we weren't dependent on the government to do it. It is in our nature.

Also, people do want libertarianism.
The problem is people want liberty for their own interests and don't respect the liberty of others' interests.

I was commenting on your comment that you were liberal, converative and now libertarian. I posted why toll boths SUCKED in Austin, lived them, people (even in conservative TEXAS!) don't like them.. I don't see the as a viable solution, and part of the INFRASTRUCTURE program..

https://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/key-concepts-libertarianism

hmm so liberaterianism is all loving and caring? new to me. They are neighborly? I don't think so, their whole center is ME. :) I am not saying it is wrong or right, but it's not ME. And yes I have read about Neanderthals, actually many times, they are our cousins, having left Africa before we did. We aren't Neanderthals acutally we are Human not neantherthal.. although we did meet up at the end of their time and the rise of homo homo sapien (in addition to Denisovans)..

My husband too was taxed that high in Austin! I believe his bonuses were taxed at 50% as a matter of fact.. Such is life for being part of a great community in good old Austin btw.

to Segue from homo neanderthalis to being dependent on the government is tooooo mind boggling to comprehend. I'd give a bit fat WTF are you talking about :)

if you have never been poor then you can't get it.. not your fault. peace and here's to our cousins!

NEWS FLASH! Government roads suck, too!! Amazing, right?

Libertarianism is love and neighborly. They wish to let their neighbors do as they wish as long as they don't harm others. Sounds a lot more respectful than what Dems and Repubs believe. That is neighborly. The center isn't "me". It is ME FIRST, then others. Just like, I love all children and want nothing bad to happen to any child but MY CHILD always comes first. Period. Maybe one day you will get it.

Nearly everyone is related to Neanderthals. Evolution has a funny way of working in which it makes things improve. If they can take care of their sick without government involvement I am sure we can too.
Think of this. You don't have enough faith in the human race taking care of one another freely but you have enough faith in people to not take advantage of social programs (whether government officials or citizens). Interesting

Also keep in mind nobody ever holds the government responsible.
Ron Paul and Rand Paul have been advocating for this for years. Love the Pauls

This is just nonsensical.

Evolution is about fitness and survival, not "improving". "Improvement" is in the eye of the beholder.

Think of it like this. How do animals know to take care of their young? Do you believe mother nature/evolution had anything to do it it?
Human compassion came about by evolution. Maybe try to look it up

Sorry, but this just isn't the correct framework for how evolution works. Darwinian theory proposes that everything is about survival of the fittest. In fact, evolutionary biologist have debated for a long time about whether / how altruism exists, and why. It just isn't as simple as you make it out to be.

The point is altruism exists and there are less people needing it than providing it so the human race can prevail with it alone and without government.
Americans give so much in donations a year (non government mandated but raised through private organizations) for cancer research and treatment, disaster relief (internationally and domestic) and more. I think it was around $258 billion in one year alone! My whole point comes back down to one thing: government is not needed to make things work nor to collect (forcefully) money for helping people. I can assure you I felt the same as you guys at one point but realized the government actually causes more problems than it fixes and is not held accountable.
I no longer wish to argue because it took many now libertarians years to actually understand it all and accept that things can get done without an insanely huge governemtn.

Hardly a flash since I live in NE. Libertarnism is not love, but it is logic. Not sure I dislike logic actually. the ME ME ME is sickening actually but to each his own in my opinion.

As a libertarian of course your child comes first.. as a liberal all children come first to me.

Libertarians are selfish, self involved, self centered, useless, self satisfied, rich, whiny humans btw. :)
