Where do you get your inexpensive settings?

I know that some of you use Lord of Gems and such for your settings for colored stones. I am wondering where to find the cheapest possible solitaire setting for my new diamond and figured you guys would know best. I am looking for cheap because hopefully in a couple of years I will be getting a permanent setting. Any suggestions? I have an email in to Daniel M but I am thinking he might be too much. I saw someone on here had their sapphire set into his Argentina (sp) silver, is that durable and does it turn your finger green? Thanks in advance.

Several people also have LOGR for diamonds as well. If you want cheap but still fairly nice quality I would do them.

Other options:
www.loupetroop.com (resale site)
www.diamondbistro.com (resale site)
www.jewelsbyericagrace.com has a sale right now and a few of the settings are super cheap right now
Daniel M on etsy- can design in silver or gold so if you are trying to keep cost down this is a good alternative

If you look in the Respected Vendor list there are also several other ebay vendors that are recommended. I think they are all the same quality as LOGR but you might get a great deal on an auction setting.

Goodluck!

There's plenty of very new looking secondhand settings per the suggested websites that Sarahbear posted. Another option is to have your local jeweller order one from Stuller. Silver is the least expensive right now but sometimes a 2nd hand white / yellow gold setting can cost as little as a new silver setting. Argentium silver (silver and copper alloy with no nickel) is generally inert and your finger should be fine.

Thanks you guys. I have been stalking the bistro and loupetroop with no luck. I will check out the other sites you listed.

Don't forget palladium as an option.

But back to the topic. You'd be surprised how inexpensive it can be to have your jeweler pick out a stock setting from their catalog and set your stones for you. I recently had three yellow sapphires put into a gold stock setting supplied by my jeweler and it was $350. Also when I was setting some garnets into earrings I picked out some earring mounts from Riogrande.com that were like $39 dollars and he set my stones in them for $30. He has always given great prices.

p.s. Prior to discovering a local jeweler I was having things custom set for between $500 to $1000 ( and that was before gold went up). Big difference.

I *think* the list Chrono posted is from the pinned thread on vendors at the top of this page. But just in case its not all inclusive, I would definitely go look at that list, as it has vendors broken down by category, with a whole group devoted to settings. :))

Shhhh.....don't let my secret out of the bag. But yes, it is a cut and paste from the sticky list.

Ooooo....naughty Chrono!

I need to go bug my local jeweler for a stock setting for one of my stones. I want it set already!

It is a slightly elongated cushion, so it measures 7.69x6.57x3.72.

You might be able to have it fit into a stock setting, in particular, a 8 x 6 mm cushion setting.

Chrono or anyone: what is the rule of thumb you use or you find helpful for how much play you have in fitting a stone? That is, can it vary as much as .5mm? more? less? TIA

+/- 0.5 mm both ways. If the prongs are long enough (brand new setting), the bench can make adjustments more easily.
