Not a good idea because the harder gems will damage the softer gems as they shift around, bouncing off each other and the side of the case. The girdles will chip and show facet abrasion. The type of case you linked to is for jewellers to place a few diamonds in when a customer is trying to pick one amongst a select few. It is not for storage purposes.

That's exactly what I want.

Another option from Rio Grande: http://www.riogrande.com/Product/White-Faux-Leather-40-Compartment-Gemstone-Display-Case-with-Cover/404224L10?Pos=27

JemcoUSA has trays with both individual gemstone compartments as well as continuous slot versions. Their website can be cumbersome and slow, so I'd recommend calling vs ordering online. They attend some of the Intergem shows, so depending on your location, you might have a chance to see them in person.

Chrono, I got a kick out of seeing that and realizing which stones I'd set, and which I'd sold. I now use glass-topped locking gem boxes - not as 'display-worthy', but I can fit more stones in, and it's more compact for travel.

This company has some really nice cases. They do mostly large scale commercial orders, but I managed to buy a couple of really nice display boxes from them a couple of years ago.

Edit: Looks like they may have discontinued their loose stone displays, but you can always call them and ask.

Since we are on the subject, thought I would mention this seller for anyone in the UK who is looking for a display. They have the big 5 drawer case and inserts that cellentani mentions in her other thread, and their service is good.

I'm also an OCD nutcase for organizing gems...there seems to be a lot of us! At least I'm not alone!
