Re: Update on my tiny fancy colored diamond collection

Bebe, I've been buying them over time.
How do I decide which to buy? Each purchase was just gut level with the highest priority placed on color.
Second is cut; I prefer the cuts that do not amp up the color like radiant does.
Unfortunately colored rough being so expensive means it's usually polished into those cuts with longer light ray paths, like radiant.
This result in stronger color grades, which means higher profits.
If they can keep a light ray bouncing around inside the stone more times before exiting it picks up more of the body color.
Some call this cheating but is it just a business reality of FCDs.

My favorite is emerald and asscher cut.
Any FCD I'd buy had to have GIA report and preferably with a GIA-assigned clarity grade; GIA will not grade the clarity of a diamond under .15 ct.

I've surfed Leibish's site daily forever.
They have one list for new stones, and another for sold stones.
Often I'd notice a really nice sold stone that I never saw in the new list.
I called them and found out the coolest colored diamonds sell fast.

That old cut round green appeared on a Friday and I wanted a question answered before I'd buy it so I sweated bullets all weekend and bought it Monday.
I grabbed the Fancy Intense Blue Green Pear the instant it appeared.
That color is riveting!
If you snooze you lose with FCDs.

I like nice color hue and saturation, and that drives the price up, so the size must come down.
I plan to feed them a high carbon diet and get them on an exercise routine so they can grow bigger. :sun:

No specific setting plans yet though the round green is most likely to get set into a tension setting.

Amazing... they are all beautiful, but I really love the round green... be still my heart  (that needs to go in a ring so you can stare at it all day!)

What a beautiful collection. I really love the emerald cut fancy light blue. I would love to get a very light pink diamond someday.

Kenny lovely collection you have going on.

Question for you, was just on the Leibish site and some of the stones are graded IGI, In House, and GIA. With FCD is it important to only choose GIA grading and stay away from IGI, EGL, In House?

Missed you, Kenny, but it looks like you have been busy. I remember the round green and the small dark blue, and you were shopping for a red. You have amassed a lovely group of colored diamonds. Looking forward to more pictures. :wavey:

Personally I've only chosen FCDs with GIA reports.
GIA is the gold standard lab for FCDs.

If I was buying a $300 FCD (and I do have one under consideration now) I'd not bother adding another $100+ for a GIA report.
Not that much money is at stake and personally I trust Leibish's opinion at this point.

Thanks Kenny, my budget are small under $1000. I have been drooling over the Liebish site. Want something colored but just overwhelmed where to start and who to start with. I get hung up not wanting to make an expensive mistake.

I will be adding Liebish to my watch list.

FWIW I know their 30-day money back guarantee works because I used it.
You can click on Advance Search to find everything under $1000 and drool away.
It found over 160 fancy colored diamonds that are under $1K, but only 3 of those have a GIA report, others have IGI or inhouse grading.

Kenny, since you know about colored diamonds, what do you think about this one?

http://www.fancydiamonds.net/view_diamonds/3020.htm

I kind of like the color. I'd like your opinion. Thanks.

EEK, I've never looked into the grey color but I'd be curious about windowing.
They do not give a depth so I'd ask for the depth, and if it is too shallow I'd avoid it.

As to how shallow is too shallow, others here could say better than I. (Maybe 50 to 55% of the smallest diameter of an oval?????)
You could also ask about this on PS Colored Stone forum; they are very skilled at how to avoid windowed stones.

Also ask Leibish if it is an eye-clean SI1 and discuss how YOU define that.
Even though you can return it you have to pay for return shipping.
I try to avoid that by being as sure as possible before buying.

Hi Kenny! :wavey:

Glad you're back, we seriously need more men on this forum, and all the trade guys seem to have disappeared, so we're happy to see you!

I adore the Fancy Deep Purple Pink, I am such a sucker for emerald cuts!

I'm amazed the Leibish guys sell so many FCD that you have to watch them so closely! It's like Gene's (Precision Gem) blog; grab it or it's gone! What are people doing with all these little things?

I wonder if colored diamonds are the engagement rings of the future? Will my great-grandchildren all have tiny FCD diamond rings, with matching magnifying glasses hung on necklaces? That would be kind of cool! :appl:

I love the connoisseurship of owning so many tiny, exquisite things. The level of detail and intricacy is astounding. Do you marvel at the skill of the cutters, when you look at them?

It's really a very unique collection, and I think it's just awesome.

If you can accept that size is not paramount you can find FCDs you can afford.
Like I just said in another thread here, I love brown diamonds, am looking for one, and they are super affordable.
The pinks with some brown in them are surprisingly affordable and often an untrained eye will not notice any brown, only pink.
It's worth looking into.
Plus the safari is fascinating.
There's so much to learn.

People have this misconception that FCDs are only bought by people like Brad Pitt or Oprah.

So beautiful Kenny! You are giving me a bug to start my own collection. Your diamonds are just stunning. The yellow heart really
calls my name. I have wanted one for the longest time. I have a yellow radiant, but would love the heart.

I was just thinking about you today and wondering if you would have thankgiving pics of you puppy babies. They are so cute.
I am glad you are back.
