It is not necessary.

We did opt to send them because a large number of our guests were out of town folks. However, I was fortunate enough to have a very generous friend who prints invitations for a living custom print our Save the Dates (and our wedding invitations). If I was trying to budget, I would have cut them out.

The Knot just did a little article about this topic - 3 "Must Have" Items of Stationery - and STDs weren''t a "Must Have." Escort Cards were...why is that, I wonder?? I didn''t plan on having these.

I think it also depends how soon you send out your wedding invites. I got my invite for a wedding only 3 weeks prior...she had some problems with the stamp price transition and hand cancelling...but she had sent out STDs, so I had already made plans to attend!!

We will be doing save the dates since most of our guest will be traveling from all over the world. For those who are in town (close to the wedding location), we''ve decided that they will get just the invites. Hope that helps.
