I recently purchased a loose diamond, however was not really excited by any of the platinum settings the store had where I found the stone. I have a ballpark of what my girlfriend likes, and those settings just weren't it. I found one that I liked on Bluenile.com however the dont sell settings separately. Has anyone purchased a setting online separately? Any site recommendations that have similar prices to Bluenile.com?

I live and work with my girlfriend so going from store to store is quite difficult...fortunately she was out of town last weekend. Online is definitely the prefered method of selection. Thanks in advance.

if you post the one from BN that you like, we could be able to find something similar, or you could have a custom made setting.

Search, these are very pretty settings and very simple. I think probably any good jeweler could make this setting for you

If you want to buy online, search vendors. You''ll find a lot of online vendors here that get great reviews!

I''m thinking the four prong Stuller Solstice, either the bombe shank or knife-edge shank, whichever you prefer. Any jeweler will be able to order for you.

No, princess goes into a lot of settings. The Vatche x-prong is popular... For "name" designers, Pearlman's carries many lines.

Vatche, round shank, round stone: http://www.dvatche.com/large_rings/images/803-b.gif
round stone, knife-edge shank http://www.dvatche.com/large_rings/images/808-b.jpg
princess stone, tapered shank, side stones http://www.dvatche.com/large_rings/images/240-a.jpg

However, you need to make sure that "very thin" girdle is not in danger in chipping (not near the corners). If I were a jeweler, I would not want to risk setting that stone unless I sold it.

May I ask how much you paid for your stone?

www.jamesallen.com might sell settings, they carry lots of basic types. The photoshop job on the side views is not too good, but they have turned out beautiful rings that have been posted on PS.

another question I have is about size...is it better to err on the high side or the low side? I know she is either a 4.5 or a 5.....would like to err on the side thats easiest to correct.

Have the jeweler who sold you the stone order the setting?

Half a size either way should be fine. Maybe get the five, since if it''s too big, she can wear it on her right hand or a middle finger, but if it''s too small...she won''t be able to wear it.

Ya, if you liked the jeweler who sold you the stone, I''d see if they''d order a Stuller solstice setting for you. They''ll be more likely to cover the stone insurance wise while they''re setting it.

you might want to consider V tipped prongs to protect the corners from impact.
