Does anyone use henna to color their hair?

I normally go to the salon and shell out lots of bucks for chemical hair color but have been in the process of cutting the chemicals and toxins out of my life. I have been trying to read up on henna and it seems like a process. I read on one website that the henna will just fade out and you will not have a root line when it fades away and then on another website I was reading that you will have a root line and if you keep coloring it with henna it will continue to get darker so you may have to just do the roots. Anybody use henna or can you point me in the right direction on where to start for a newbie. I asked my hairstylist if the salon used henna and of course she was saying all the bad things henna is and does compared to redken.
