I just looked online at a particular diamond, that I''ve looked at
on and off for the past 4 months. I was shocked when I saw the price has jumped 10,000!
Yeah, this was an expensive stone to start with and a very lovely one at that, but is this a sign of things to come??

It is close to 4cts. Gosh, even as I''m typing this, I''m still shocked.
The stone is not quite a year old, according to the cert.
I might just ask the vendor, we all know ''em!

I always hear that prices are going up, not sure I really believe it but hey, who knows? They never seem to be going down when I am buying, and hubby says the diamond market is actually dropping...so it is really hard to say.

I have noticed price increases at auction - grrrr......
29.gif
- I just lost out on a neat stone I was eyeballing.

Anyhow, part of the issue could be the dismal state of the US dollar. As we know, the dollar is in tatters verses world currencies, so if you are buying and you earn your money in pounds or euro, our prices look low. Could justify some price increases.

I, too have heard prices were going up, but this seems a bit much
for one stone.
Oh well, it wasn''t something I was seriously considering, I was
intrigued by it - it was a gorgeous stone.

HI:

I know what you are saying. I recently went to my jeweller, and looked at rings similar to the one I bought last year, and the prices were, UNREAL! Tens of thousands more actually.......................... I was shocked to say the least.......

cheers--Sharon

Bingo...

But that is only a "part"...DS is correct..., large (significantly large, mostly 4 carats and up) higher quality Diamonds prices are constantly climbing..., and will continue to (in my opinion...)

That fact alone pulls the second and third qualities to the up position..., but much more selectively.
What I am witnessing lately is the high quality smalls (0.10-0.50 cts.) are showing signs of "take off"... especially in the fancy shape category...

As beacon is saying..., The two most serious Auction houses just compleated their most important auction of the year... Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires and natural pearls all broke world record prices.

Geez, so 1 stone can jump 10,000.00 in price because of the dismal dollar and auction house prices? I could understand a few thousand, but 10Grand on 1 stone - too much I say!

Ann,
There was something on the news recently saying large diamonds are a good investment; especially in the 3 carat and up sizes and the prices on those are going to go up like 30% over the next 5 years. It was the news show Pricescope said to watch. I made my hubby watch so that maybe he would agree. Nope.

Large sizes will continue to increase in rarity/value since the more diamonds that are mined the rarer they become, relative to total supply.

Ok, I can understand everything you guys are saying...
and I can understand increasing a stone's value according to the market
but a 1 time jump on 1 stone for 10 grand, seems a bit of a stretch. JMHO.

Hey strmrdr..., do you remember how much was Gold-Silver-Platinum, oil when you joined PS??
gold - 375 ish - today 679 ish
silver 5.50 ish - today 13.39
plat. $650 ish - today $1290
oil - $30 ish - today $65.06

but comparing commodity prices to decoration prices isn't right, comparing them to other luxury consumer goods is better.

Cool, lets try that...

A rolex watch for example, maybe a Beach front house in Malibu, a 1st class ticket (cross Atlantic...) etc etc...

Anyone have a good memory to shoot some Luxury items as examples?

I think a (simple version) Rolex was approx... $2000, today it should be reaching the $4000 =/-?
(But again..., Rolex could be considered a commodity!!!)

By the way...

This is why DeBeers went wild and changed their whole business structure and marketing strategies...
They were the first to notice how luxury goods are climbing as Diamonds sales and prices were staying flat for the last decade...

If their move was a smart move??? Only the future will tell...

DiaGem,

Do you regard diamonds as commodities?
Definitely a BIG NO!!!!!

But it seems that interesting parties try super hard to do it....
And when it comes to the new "perfect/Ideal" rounds..., yes, I am starting to believe these specific Diamonds are becoming comodities!!!

Thank god for fancy shapes/ unusual cuts and the "rare" Fancy Colored Diamonds...

I could have swron this one was $88k+ in Jan:

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-72794.htm

Harriet, I also could have sworn that when you posted http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-72997.htm was lower than it is today. Did it go up in the last week?

That 7ct is one whopper of a stone, I saw it and it is indeed an incredible stone.
